The Petzl MYP RXP Headlamp is the first multi-sport headlamp that allows you to customize light settings for changing conditions and activities. Select three different power modes from ten different light levels, from 8 to 140 lumens. This programmable function lets you customize the headlamp for everything from a nighttime training run to a multi-day adventure race.
Boost mode gives you a powerful 160 lumens of light for night runs or descent hikes
Ten different light levels between 8 and 140 lumens for wide range of lighting
Programmable flash mode speed for signaling
Comptible with lithium batteries for extended life
Automatically switches to reserve power mode when batteries are low
Additional top strap included for extra stability
Bottom Line: Customize your lighting with the MYO RXP.
Just got back from a trek on the Appalachian and we would average 6 miles a night before we would set up camp. The light preformed marvelously!! I really like that you can set your own light modes. I have mine set at 1-4-and 7. The light is awesomely bright I never need to use the highest setting. And if I do, I just us the boost feature. And when those 160 lumen come on, it really lights up the woods!! I gave it 4 stars because nothing is perfect. Its not the most water proof, but hey, Im not using it for scuba diving. Also the rubber button can be a bit tedious, but thats just knit picking. Definitely recommend!!
Lost my previous headlamp while hiking somehow... and had to have another by the weekend. I've been getting into mountaineering, so I wanted one that would give me a lot of battery life, but still give me a lot of light. I purchased this one, and although I haven't taken it on an alpine start, it is awesome for night hikes. The lowest level is more effective than the highest level on my older headlight (Petzl Tikka Plus) at evenly distributing very usable light, and the high setting amazes me with how far I can actually see. It is really comfortable on my head (I would say even more comfortable than the Tikka Plus; less weight up front). The programmable lighting levels are a definite plus.
hey, i need a lamp that will light up the area around me HARDCORE, like within the 20 meter area. i dont mind paying whatever it costs im just torn between the myo rxp, duo5 and duo 14. dont see a buzillion flood light led's on the myo rxp like there is on the duo and im wondering if that will matter. any info will help. thanks
The defuser on the RXP really does a great job of spreading out the already bright beam. When you hit the boost button with the defuser up, it really lights up the night. On the lowest setting, which is 8 lumens, you can easily cook or I even was able to hike on less technical parts of the trail. I don't even use the 9 or 10 setting because its just to much and for the fact that those two settings aren't regulated.
The MYO RXP is rated greater than 20 meters at all program levels for several hours (varies with program level, but greatest is 35 hours/23 meters). The MYO RXP doesn't need the flood to maintain this output since it uses ultrabright LEDs. The DUO LED 5 is rated 70 meters at 30 minutes, 22 meters at 10 hours, and 9 meters at 30 hours (4xAA batteries); 24 meters for 12 hours with NiMH batteries. The DUO LED 14 is rated at (average), 34 meters through 3.5 hours and 9 meters at 10 hours at maximum power and 26 meters through 10 hours at optimum power.
So, it all comes down to light/time. Since you need to light up 20 meters, use that as your constant and then go for the most time. The MYO RXP offers the most time for >20 meters at 35 hours (program 1) in addition to having several program levels, it also has a "boost" setting for up to 97 meters for short duration (but will reduce overall usable time significantly). It's the most versatile of the headlamps you mentioned. As for total battery life, the MYO RXP varies from 54 - 95 hours, DUO 5 = 65 hours for the 5 LEDs (AAx4 batteries) and 30 hours for the NiMH batteries, and the DUO 14 = 183.5 hours at maximum and 148 hours for optimum. Just looking at the numbers, the best battery performance is the DUO 14 followed by the MYO XRP.
Overall, the MYO RXP looks like the best option, with the DUO LED 5 being the worst. I've presented the data here since I don't know what you need as far as light/time or what you need for overall battery life.
Of course, if you want really hardcore lighting, the Petzl ULTRA would be the airport beacon on your head option. It illuminates up to 120 meters for 1.5 hours, 80 meters to 4.75 hours, and 40 meters for 16.75 hours. Battery life is short, however, with 2 hours, 5 hours, and 16 hours respectively.
only taken it out a couple of times. so far it's been great. very bright and i like the adjustable presets. not as heavy as i expected. i don't get to use it as much as i like since the gf is always snagging it for bathroom breaks.
This lamp sure blows last year's MYO XP out of the water. I love the fact that it's 140 lumens on the highest setting. The ability to use lithium batteries is a really good feature in my book. Having constant light power is a plus. Those kind of batteries also make it more comfortable to wear as well. I use this light for night walking, fishing, and mountain biking. When I use this light to spear fish in the creek at night I just can't believe how the bright the path is in front of me. This light my be expensive to some people out there, but it's well worth the money!
I use this headlamp for caving and I love the flip up lens for dispersed light and the programmable feature is great for getting the ideal battery life/light output combination. The only problem with it is the battery pack. It has a cover that is simply a flexible sleeve which fits over the batteries. It is not dust or water resistant at all. This is a good headlamp, but not for wet or dusty conditions.
This light is simply amazing. I bought it, even with the relatively high price, and couldnt be happier with the purchase. Bright is an understatement. Even on the lowest setting, it is more than bright enough to function perfectly within a dark room or outdoors at night. The spot/flood option is excellent. I bought 2 sets of Duracell 2650mAh batteries to use with it and it lasts forever.
I wouldnt hesitate to buy this light again if this one ever gets lost, stolen, or broken.
