Petzl Cosmi'tec Ice Axe

Combining the advantages of a standard ice axe with a technical ice tool, the Petzl Cosmi'tec Ice Axe has a slightly bent shaft and reverse-curve pick for better penetration in ice. This axe is ideal for slightly technical alpine routes on which a half-day of walking may be followed by a couple short pitches of moderate ice. Weighing in at only 16.5oz, its lightweight design makes it excellent for ski mountaineering as well.

Bottom Line: When the terrain is too steep for a standard axe, switch to the Cosmi'tec.

I was hoping for that, too. I'm looking to get one or the other, and don't know yet which one. I've swung the venom like an ice tool, and it felt nice, but I've never actully held a cosmi'tec in my hand. They weigh more or less the same (the cosmi'tec is a hair lighter) and the venom has a rubber grip and a replaceable pick. I'm probably going to get the Petzl because I prefer no grip when plunging the shaft in hard snow.

Nice balance

This is a great axe with a balance of being able to be used in hiking then be used to handle technical terrain without hesitation. If you are looking for a solid axe that will cover your bases in beginning mountaineering/climbing this is the one for you- much better than the Black Diamond Raven.
