Pearl Izumi Vagabond II Cycling Jacket - Men's - 2007
The Pearl Izumi Men's Vagabond II Jacket makes one practical riding companion on your wandering adventures. The Vagabond II Jacket offers outstanding wind- and water- resistance in inclement conditions, and the sleeves zip off for better ventilation when all you need is a vest. The 360-degree reflective material keeps you in the spotlight and out of harm's way, while storage pockets in the front and back store snacks and sleeves. And this is no bumbling vagabond—the jacket's fitted cut and elasticized cuffs smoothly stay out of your way.
i've tried a lot of bike clothing and pretty much decided that pearl izumi makes the best bike stuff, so when I decided it was time to get an obnoxious yellow jacket, the vagabond II was a no brainer. When it arrived, the color was a perfect blinding yellow and the zip off sleeve unit was a brilliant design. In riding with it a few times, I discovered several fatal flaws. 1-it doesn't breath worth anything, like wearing a plastic bag. 2-the elastic on the sleeves aren't very tight, so if it is cold out, you get a blast of cold air up the sleeves of your wind breaker--fail. 3-the stitching holding the sleeve zipper is not very strong and broke when trying to remove the jacket when it is all sticky and wet from problem #1 Overall, looks cool. Has some great features. If you don't sweat this is the jacket for you.
As a stamd alone probably not, however this would make a great base layer under one of those bulky spaceman suits. The Vagabond would block wind (not solar winds, of course) and offer some protection against any liquid rain you could find. However, I recommend a space suit underneath to prevent violent decompression, freezing (you'll be close to absolute zero), and the most severe sunburn that you've ever experienced (It'll be 3rd degree everywhere), as well as the cuts caused by the space dust ore ice particles that bombard you. But seriously, no.
i wrote a longer review, but it got deleted through the login process, so here is the summary. good: 1 - color is perfect 2 - zip off sleeve is a brilliant design (comes off in one piece) bad: 1 - does not breath, like wearing a plastic bag 2 - the elastic at the wrist is not tight enough, allowing a freezing cold breeze up the sleeve of your windbreaker--fail. 3 - stitching holding on sleeve is not so strong and tears when you try and take of wet, sticky, sweaty jacket because of the first problem.
I ended up with a gore bikewear jacket. it was a little more dough, but addresses all the problems of this jacket.
Based on the sizing chart I am either a large med. or a small large. I bought a med in a Pearl slice jersey and it was pretty tight. Should I buy a large in this jacket?
I can't tell you for certain, but I have a Pearl Jersey that seems just a touch big in a small, but this jacket is just a touch small in a small. I opted for the Medium in my case, and it seems a little big, but considering my options that seemed best.I would recommend the large in your case, but I also don't want to claim to be an expert either...Hope that helps and everything works out well for ya.
We bike and hike in Joshua Tree National Park. This jacket is the greatest. When it's cool in the morning we wear it with sleeves, then when it warms up, off come the sleeves. They work like a charm, easy on and off. A well made, comfortable jacket. I'm a convert
