Pearl Izumi Quest Mountain Bike Shoe - Men's - 2008

You want mountain biking shoes that'll keep your feet and heels securely in-shoe, but you don't quite need the super-duper buckle-system either. Grab the Pearl Izumi Men's Quest MTB Bike Shoes. A nylon sole on these shoes brings the price down without sacrificing too much stiffness. Three hook-and-loop straps and a synthetic heel liner hold your foot in place, so your power transfers directly from foot to pedal instead of from foot, to side-to-side-wiggle, to pedal. I would like to try clip-less pedals and am interested in this

I would like to try clip-less pedals and am interested in this particular shoe because it appears that the cleat is recessed. This would come in handy for city use. Are the cleats removable and can the shoes be worn without removal of the cleat and allow free range of motion.

The cleats are recessed. The cleats are removable. You don't NEED to clip in while pedaling, but typically it's easier to.Now my opinion....From what it sounds like, you may want to try a shoe with a less aggressive tread pattern. There are shoes on the market with a higher degree of walking comfort. They will still offer a recessed cleat, but will probably have a bit softer rubber on the sole and maybe a touch more flex under foot. Forget all of this if you plan on riding off road most of the time. KC
