Pearl Izumi Insula Tour Jacket - Men's - 2008

Wear the Pearl Izumi Men's Insula Tour Jacket while long distance touring in cold weather, or when you're night cruising down to the bar. A front layer of insulation protects you from the frigid elements, and stretchy UltraSensor-Thermal fabric on the sides and back retains warmth while breathing. The lightweight, athletic cut reduces bulk while increasing range of motion.

Bottom Line: Lightweight, stylish, and versatile.

also, at what temperature (real feel) would you start wearing

also, at what temperature (real feel) would you start wearing a jacket like this. I have never held one or perused one. Would you wear this at 45 degrees with one wicking shirt underneath? would that be about right?mike

as to when you start wearing the jacket is a personal choice when the weather turns cold I will start by wearing arm and knee warmers with va vest this makes it easy to remove items that can fit in jesery pockets. if it feels to cold for this then I will put on a light weight jacket which can also be stuffed in a pocket. then when it gets down around 35-40 degrees I move to leg warmers or tights and a jacket like this with a base layer under keeps me warm down to around 25 degrees. here are some great cool to cold weather optionshttp://www.backcountry.com/store/PLZ0246/Pearl-Izumi-Vagabond-Jacket-Mens.htmlhttp://www.backcountry.com/store/CST0101/Castelli-Nano-Arm-Warmer.htmlhttp://www.backcountry.com/store/PLZ0347/Pearl-Izumi-Vertex-Thermafleece-Bib-Knicker-Mens.htmlhttp://www.backcountry.com/store/GBW0052/Gore-Bike-Wear-Leg-Warmer-III.htmlhttp://www.backcountry.com/store/PLZ0262/Pearl-Izumi-Slice-Thermafleece-Cycling-Bib-Tight-Mens.html

Solid Choice

Cycling clothing is always a challenge. How much up? How much down? Temperature, wind, rain, pace, etc. I have not tested this jacket in the wet and my guess is that it is suitable for light rain only. It is, however, absolutely brilliant for warmth and heat/moisture management over a surprisingly large range of temperature and wind conditions. I would agree with the previous reviewer and say that it is simply too warm for anything above 50F/10C. Nevertheless, in the range for 32F/0C all the way up to there it will keep you warm and mostly wind-chill-free while simultaneously preventing overheating. The back and sides are highly breathable and the front is warm, breathable and wind/moisture resistant. I usually wear a long sleeve base layer under this and I'm comfortable and extremely visible (safety as well as comfort). I have noticed a slight gap in the wind resistance in the underarm area. This is obviously a compromise with breathability but depending on your riding posture you may get a small cold spot in the underarm area in very cold, downhill conditions. This is a small complaint, overall this is an outstanding jacket.

Is it better to get this jacket one size larger to add base layers

Is it better to get this jacket one size larger to add base layers or go true to your actual size? I measure just under 43" at the chest...
thanks

If you're right at 43" at the chest, you might want to go with an XL. If you don't mind your gear a little snug, the L will still probably work for you. Personally I prefer a snugger fit with my winter gear, I stay warmer! thanks matt.... also this is semi form fit on the pearl izumi site so maybe there is a bit of playroom anyway...

Great Jacket

I received this jacket and wore a Under Armour heat gear shirt under it,and I was quite warm. It was 27 degrees F. It is really bright, so I think the cars can see you good. The sleeves have the zipper to the wrist to make them snug around my gloves. I really like it. I need to get someone to take a photo of me wearing in the dark. It would be to warm above 50 degrees or so.

Not waterproof. It will be fine in a sprinkle, but in a downpour you're getting soaked.
