Patagonia Wool 2 Zip Neck Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's
You're on day three of your backcountry adventure—good thing you're wearing the Patagonia Men's Wool 2 Zip-Neck base layer. This merino wool top doesn't hold the stank like your old synthetic long underwear did. The versatile Wool 2 Zip-Neck keeps you comfortable when you backpack, cross country ski, rock climb, hike, or mountain bike in warm or cool weather. Wool regulates your body temperature by moving perspiration away from your skin and insulating you against either heat or cold. Patagonia used wool that hasn't been treated with environmentally harmful chlorine to make this soft zip-neck top. A tricot-taped zipper provides next-to-skin comfort. This shirt has a contoured fit for easy layering.
Bottom Line: Wear the non-itchy, eco-friendly Patagonia Wool 2 Zip-Neck next to your skin.
I took this to Orizaba this past winter. I traveled in them on the bus rides and hiked it them up to the summit. Overall great breathability and IT DOES NOT STINK. The zipper helps cool off when it's around 70-80 farenheit. I wore these everyday hiking and in my sleeping bag and I never stank and they don't itch. My buddies with Capilene complained about the itching in the crotch area and they smelt pretty bad. I think the wool is worth the extra cost. I also have the Wool 2 bottom and Wool 3 top and bottoms. If it gets super cold, I just layer all of them. Overall one of my favorite pieces of clothing.
Since this is a 'slim fit' top, the xxl would already be tight. Unfortunately, the xl is not going to work for you.
If you are looking for a different merino top, Backcountry sells some through their house brand, Ibex, Smartwool, and Icebreaker that you could look into.
very warm yet very light, can be worn in almost any condition. Excellent as a stand alone base layer under a rain coat in cool, heavy rain. fits snug, sleeves are a little longer than normal. cuffs tend to stretch easily and do not return to tight fit. Like all Patagonia gear, it is overpriced. despite the ridiculous prices, Patagonia has by far the best baselayers (especially wool) of any brand (but lousy jackets and rain gear).
Typically, wool is itchy... very itchy. However, most wool apparel these days are made out of "merino wool". Merino wool offers “no-itch” comfort; merino wool fiber is so fine that five strands equal the width of a human hair. Its long fibers guarantee a wool shirt like this won’t itch. If this shirt was made out of 100% wool, yes, it would be itchy like you said, but merino wool is here to stay :)
Great materials, fits a long torso well. Zip front is generous. Good elemental component of a layering system. The wool weight used is great for 3 season wear. The only thing that would improve it would thumbholes.
