Wear the versatile Patagonia Men's R1 Flash Pullover either as a heavy base layer or lightweight insulating mid-layer when you exert in cold temps. You'll love the stretchy R1 fabric as well as the stretch panels underneath the arms that move with you as you scramble over scree or schuss down slopes. The breathable R1 fabric wicks sweat away from your body so you don't get that all-over clammy feeling when you pause to have a snack. Pull down the front zipper, offset to prevent chafing your chin, for ventilation when you work hard. Lightweight stretch panels placed at the wrist and hem reduce bulk under gloves or a harness. Although Patagonia made the R1 Flash to have a trim fit, it's roomy enough to go over a light base layer. Stash your ID or energy gel in the zippered chest pocket.
Bottom Line: Many wear it as a base layer. Some wear it as a mid-layer. And some just drink beer in it après ski. So many choices.
The R1 Flash is probably my most-worn article of clothing. It's great over medium capilene with a shell on top for shredding on the hill, or even by itself for nordic skiing. I also use it over a t-shirt for cooler summer nights and wearing to class, etc. Also great for backpacking because it's so ridiculously compressible. If you want a fleece to wear alone in the winter, opt for something a little heavier, but the R1 is surprisingly warm, and extremely versatile.
I have long arms and a thin torso, and it was great to find a pullover that actually fits both my torso and arms. The fleece is comfortable and it is made extremely well as well as all other Patagonia products. I strongly suggest this pullover to anyone for comfort, warmth, and style.
I got this fleece as a gift, and I am so stoked on it. I use it pretty much as my fall/spring outer-layer, and for driving to school in the winter. But mostly, I use this as a thin mid-layer for skiing. It fits perfectly over a Helly Dry base-layer, and under my Helly Softshell. It moves with you, and has that added bonus of being super stylin' while sitting in the chalet!
This pullover is an ESSENTIAL part of my set up. Wicks sweat, insulates, and feels soft against the skin. Fits true to size. I am normally a small, but I got a medium as a gift. In my excitement, I disregarded the long sleeves and yanked off all the tags. Even with a size up, this jacket constantly performs beyond my expectations
Sizing on this is spot on! I can wear a real light wicking layer like Capilene one or a light Smartwool layer underneath, or just next to skin, and this thing still fits perfect!! As a single piece on cooler fall days, this thing holds its own as long as you are active. No brainer when I need a nice go to light fleece jacket for extended stays. Under softshells or insulated jackets, the R1 is great at keeping your body warmth in and acts as a great first insulator. I really want to pick up one of the hoody versions! Even works out at the bar after a long day out. Definitely won't be dissapointed...pick one up.
I have been looking for a lightweight and warm technical middle-layer pullover, when I read many people raving about this R1 flash pullover from Patagonia. R1 is really a nice and versatile pullover: it's lightweight, non-bulky, warm for its weight (due to the waffle construction in the inside; the exterior is smooth though). I can use it as base layer during cold winter time (mind you though that your belly might feel the inside part of the zipper, as biger zipper is used compared to mini zipper in Patagonia Capilene products), or as a (outer) sweater for cooler summer night, or as middle layer during fall/autumn time. Really nice construction and quaility product from Patagonia.
I would agree. This is a great piece that every outdoorsman should have. It's very fitted, which allows it to be worn as a base layer or alone. Moves very well and is comfortable. I wish Backcountry carried the hoodie, I'd buy it.
i wear this all spring and fall and into the winter when i'm cabbing it in chicago. i agree that this and rime are the best layers you can buy. ...and it's just amazingly soft!
Wore this pullover almost every day on a recent trip to Norway. Perfect as top layer, or under heavier jacket on colder days. Easy wash, fast dry, very comfortable, looks smart. Buy one!
I have to agree with Gee Alsenz...I have this and the hoody and this is WAY better. The hoody is akward, and cant be worn under a fleece unless you like the feel of being choked. This on the other hand, is a nice piece of clothing. The offset zipper does help with chin chafe, and the outer material does not bind when under a fleece. It wicks very well, and when paired with a wicking baselayer I stay dry pretty much all the time. Worth the money for sure. Be warned though...once you ski in it you wont want to wear it out and about since patagucci doesnt treat their gear with antimicrobial treatment, and as a result mine stinks badly (washing doesnt do a thing).
While I would never pay $100 for it, I was lucky enough to get it on sale, and I'm glad I did. No question that it's the best piece of its kind, as well as proof that you get what you pay for. Very warm for its weight, and extremely breathable. It is extremely versatile, and fills that gap between baselayer and fleece. The fit is truly made for an athletic person as it is big in the chest and arms. Fits like a glove.
Better than the hooded version, if possible. Great baselayer for cold activities. My lady gave me one two years ago and I buy em full-rice willingly now. Great quality, superior wicking and heat retention, great fit. So versatile, and totally worth it.
I am not sure what you are expecting out of this fleece but it is not very warm at all. i ride my bike to work in SAN FREAKIN' DIEGO and I was freezing this morning while wearing this fleece. It was not cheap but the wind goes right through it. Thank god i got this at a discount.
on the plus side, it looks good. and uhm, did i mention i got it at a discount.
This is likely the most versatile piece of outdoor (and indoor) gear I own. It layers well with anything, cotton T for casual wear or a capilene base layer for active sports. A real advantage of this material is the warmth/breathability/weight factor, I've worn nothing better.
I bought this a month ago and it has been in heavy circulation since. Can be worn casually, as a midlayer, or even over a shirt in more temperate weather. light, warm, drys quickly; the cut seems to be for long lanky people like myself, but the material is designed to stretch so it should work out for anyone. It's a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. If you want gear to perform like it costs a hundred bucks... then it's gonna cost at least that much. In my opinion this shirt is well worth that.
This is a great piece that is incredibly versatile, as the reviewers have both mentioned previous to me. You can wear it in the coldest winter as a baselayer, and as a middle layer when things aren't as cold, or in very mild weather just over a T-shirt. Well constructed, like all Patagonia products, and is extremely compressible, and dries quickly if you get it wet. The fit is pretty standard for Patagonia, I'm 6'0"/165 lbs and got a Medium. You can fit a thin baselayer underneath--but that's all you're supposed to be able to--and it stretches so I don't feel claustrophobic. Kudos to Patagonia!
The interior waffle construction makes this pullover so lightweight and comfortable. The fit and function of this item really do suit it to a large range of use.
-Cool day? Capilene 2 t-shirt and R1 pullover. -Cold day hiking? Capilene 3/4 shirt and R1 pullover. -Super cold or windy day? Capilene 4 shirt, R1 pullover, R4 jacket or Lightweight R4 jacket. -Camping and it's bloody freezing in the tent? Cap 4, R1 pullover, Down Hoody.
Right now I'm sitting at home watching TV and I'm wearing this thing. It's the most comfortable and versatile item of clothing I own. I love it. At $115 it's quite pricey though. If you can find it on sale, go for it. At full price, I dunno, but I do really love it!
I've got this in the hooded and unhooded version and I love them both. The unhooded is a little more versatile and gets a lot of use- great layer for skiiing or other snow sports in the winter, or over a t-shirt in fall/spring for trail running, mtn biking, etc...I take mine everywhere I travel and sleep in it 30% of the year. Chest pocket is a great feature for keeping things organized.
I received this jacket as a gift, and I must say, its the best gift I have ever received. I usually wear it as a baselayer its SO COMFY and wear it to bed on a regular basis. If you want something with water resistance, get the Backcountry.com Rime pullover. Its a softhshell, and is nearly as comfortable as this supple pull over. If you want handloops, get the R1 hoody
This pullover, combined with a capaline base and burly shell creates an extremely warm, comfortable skiing getup. For winter runs, fall strolls or cold houses, it provides adequate warmth. It also looks really sharp with a button down shirt underneath. My only problems with it are its price and it's warmth. I bought mine on sale (for around thirty dollars.) It's a nice piece, but for 115$, you can get a lot more as far as warmth and packability goes. I wouldn't trust this pullover to keep me warm in harsh conditions, and have been caught shivering in it many times. But for layering and active pursuits, it is another quaility product from the fine people at patagucci.
