The Patagonia Puff Jacket is a puffy synthetic insulated coat. In basecamp, on a bivy, or under a lean-to, grab the Puff from your pack and you'll be toasty before you can say "BTU." To get the optimal thermal benefit of high-loft Polarguard HV insulation, Patagonia's cut back on bulk and made the fabric and fill work harder. The Puff is soft, featherweight and compressible. It shuns ugly wind and weather, dries quickly and wears well on its own or under a shell. The front zip is backed by a wind flap and chin guard; the hood snaps on or off (the snaps hide under the placket), and the elastic spandex cuffs and drawcord hem seal out icy air. The Patagonia Puff Jacket is a great alternative to down for adventurers frequenting in cold, wet climates.
Bottom Line: The Puff is an invaluable piece of gear to keep in your pack.
Warm, warm, warm. Good pockets. But where's the Puff? That's a good thing, actually--no big puffball to get in the way. This jacket is warm without the bulk of down. But totally misnamed.
I just returned from an Alaskan caribou hunt located 200 miles North of the Arctic Circle. Encountered days of 30 degree temps and 40 mph winds and rain. I layered the puff jacket under a Gore-tex shell and stayed warm and dry. Its high loft, light weight and warm detachable hood make it a winner at a reasonable price.I give it two thumbs up!
I tried quite a few insulated jackets and most were too bulky with little room to layer. This jacket has a great fit, is lightweight and allows room for layers. Definitely one of the best of the insulated jackets.
I live in Helsinki, Finland. I don't need to tell you that it damn cold here. Helsinki is at 61 degrees north. We have days when we get only 5 hours of light during the day... if there's no cloud cover. My Patagonia Puff Jacket was awesome when the temperature dropped to -25C. Whenever the temperature drops I can't wait to put the "Puff" to the test. Last winter was fairly mild. Helsinki usually has a cold spell where the low temperature drops to -35C - BRING IT ON!!
When wearing the "Puff Jacket", I would recommend a microfleece and nothing heavier. The hood on the "Puff" is wicked warm... so much so I took off! Use the hood in temperatures lower that -25C with significant wind chill.
You'll be happy you bought this jacket - I am! Alain Helsinki, Finland
Bought this about a year ago and am loving it. Totally warm for the coldest weather we get here in the Wasatch--I can't count how many times I was taking my ski gear off at the truck last winter and just been freezing, then throw on the Puff and warmed right up. Great, comfortable jacket. And it's nice and light so it can be used for cool summer nights camping.
