Patagonia Down Sweater Full-Zip Hooded Jacket - Men's
The Patagonia Down Sweater Full-Zip Hoody Jacket. Seriously. Is it a hoody, a sweater, or a down jacket? Well … let’s just say that this 800-fill down torso-cover works as a mad insulating layer for frigid treks and as a windproof, water-resistant shell for mountaineering and alpine climbing trips.
800-Fill goose down adds loads of warmth without a ton of bulk
Superlight 100%-recycled polyester shell blocks wind and helps combat wetness
Elastic cuffs and drawcord hem corral heat
Insulated hood slides over your beanie to combat scalp goose-bumps
Internal stuff-sack pocket with carabiner clip-in loop for de-layering during a climb
I'm debating whether to get Mtn HW's Subzero hoodie or Patagonia's Down Sweather Full Zip Hoody Jacket... I am wondering if both would be able to withstand the temperature of zero?
The Down Sweater's not designed to compete with the Sub Zero, check out the Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Hoody though. It uses nicer down than the sub zero, and will get you to zero and well below.
The Down Sweater isn't nearly as warm as the MH Sub Zero. Not even close. I'd say they'd both be fine in 0 Celsiusin fact that's close to the upper limit for the MHbut the Down Sweater would not be nearly warm enough in 0 Fahrenheit. The MH SZ would be perfect for that.
I got this thing a few weeks ago, so it might be a bit over zealous to already give it 5 stars... but this thing is bonkers. I put it through its paces already on a 22 hour epic in Red Rocks Nevada. Ended up having to rappel 1500ft in the dark in the desert after a full day of climbing, and I'm pretty sure I woulda freaked out if I wasnt so god damn cozy in my down sweater.
This thing packs down to nothing, and weighs nothing, so when my minamilst buddy was giving me sh!t about my pack weight for a multipitch climb, i told him to go sh!t in his hat. The jacket stays... and thank the sweet baby J... as soon as the sun dipped so did the temps. and thats precisely when our rope got snagged in a crack. I pull the jacketo out of her stuff sac/ pocketo and zipper her up. Through the hood on under my hemlet and was toasty.
Pros: Very light. Packs well. Warm with t-shirt to about 5C. Adj. hood. High collar. Comfortable. Somewhat water repellant
Cons: Durablity?
Best overall down sweater. The hood is a huge advantage in staying warm. One real world downside is that it is comfortable enough to wear on many days without an outer layer. The fabric extrenally is very light and there is not much that won't put a tear in it. Hard to fault the product though. If it were tougher it would weigh more and that is not the purpose. Just wrote it as information for people who know they are hard on clothes.
Hey Ty, aside from the change from the half-zip pullover, are there any other changes to the jacket from last year? I liked the pullover style, the awesome kangaroo pouch to warm up your hands, and the comfort of the soft elastic cuff which worked beautifully. But at the same time I kinda like having a full zip for easy on/off. Thanks!
I have the pullover and I tried one of these on at the Patagucc store in San Francisco... it's the same thing. The thing you lose (which I love so much) is the kangaroo pocket. But maybe switching to full zip is an acceptable trade.... hard to say.
The Down Sweater has been one of my favorite jackets for some time, and now we finally get it in a full zip hoody. I love how it fits and looks as a hoody, and the hood is very warm when it gets really cold, like having a down beanie on. It's still got the great lightweight DWR coated shell for wind and water protection, and 800 fill down inside. Packs into it's own pocket and provides great warmth without overheating too quickly. I'm always amazed at how comfortable and versatile these jackets are. This is a jacket you can wear anywhere, anytime all winter long.
