When your partner has been on lead for the last hour and you’re huddled on a tiny, frigid belay ledge in the middle of a snow storm, give thanks to Patagonia for the Men’s DAS Parka. This lightweight puffy features a weather-resistant shell and high-lofting PrimaLoft One insulation that keeps you warm even if it gets wet. The oversized hood fits over all types of helmets, and the two-way zipper lets you get at your belay device while keeping the jacket zipped. Large handwarmer pockets and interior mesh pockets store your chilly hands or water bottles, and Patagonia included a stuff sack for when it’s time to climb.
Bottom Line: An ultralight insulator made famous on belay ledges worldwide.
This jacket helped me get through sub-freezing temperatures on a high's course during a Wisconsin winter. I originally had a large to allow for layering; however, right before the winter hit, I exchanged it for a medium and it made the world of difference (5' 11" and about 180 lbs.). I still have plenty of room for layering, and the fit is much better. Like the other reviewer shows, the inside mesh pockets allow gloves to dry out, and act as a parking garage for many other items. The collar did seem a little high at first, but ended up providing me with great coverage for my face while I was sitting waiting for participants to climb up. The hood works very well with a helmet underneath, but without one, it takes some minor adjustments to prevent it from flopping if you're doing a little walking. Overall, it's a great belay parka, and a great piece for someone who, like me, wanted to make sure they didn't ruin a down jacket while learning the basics of taking care of their gear. Another sweet product backed by Patagonia's awesome guarantee.
The DAS Parka is definitely a puffy, but it's not super michelin man or staypuff marshmallow. The Primaloft insulation provides a ton of warmth and not a lot of bulk, so for a jacket this warm the DAS is a great choice.
I own two of these- one was a military contract overrun (yes the military uses these) and one purchased here. Fit & finish: AAA+; materials quality: AAA+, smalll details, like pocket placement and zipper location: AAA+. Keeps me toasty on the coldest, windiest days-and the Patagonia DWR is very effective. I own a lot of high-end parkas (NF Serow,Canada Goose Arctic, MH Sub-Zero, etc) and this is the one I reach for every time. WELL WORTH THE MONEY.P.S.: one other thing: Patagonia's lifetime no-questions asked warranty is great. I had 6 months of cancer therapy and lost 92 pounds. Do you know that they exchanged both of my DAS Parkas for smaller sizes, no questions asked? That kind of service is priceless and rare today. That alone is enough reason to buy this parka- BTW Backcountry's policy is the same- they have treated me beyond great.
