Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket - Men's

The Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket is made for working under the hood of your truck or spending the night in a bivy. Patagonia made this jacket with a plush Synchilla Fozzie-the-Bear outer, a polyester mesh liner, and a windproof breathable membrane sandwiched in the middle. The Classic Retro-X Jacket packs a surprising amount of warmth for its light weight. The sooner you get this jacket, the sooner you'll be able to mat down the ¼-inch Synchilla for its real Classic look.

Bottom Line: Classic style meets lightweight windproofing in Patagonia's Retro-X Jacket.

I ordered the Chili color and it was really really bright red (I guess the name should have warned me). I got the XL for my boyfriend for Christmas, he is 6'3" and weighs about 230 pounds and the jacket did not fit well at all. It was long enough and fit well in the chest but it was huge in the waist and sholders. The outside is super soft and cozy, but since it is windproof the inside is not soft at all. Overall the jacket is cute on the outside but fit terrible.

This retro jacket give you a unique look that no other company has pulled off as well as patagonia. The windstopper layer makes this a perfect go-to jacket for all of fall and early winter. The quality of the jacket is exactly what you would expect for the price and the sizing runs true.

If you want the warmer, more technical of the two go for the R4. Both are fully windproof, and the Retro X is a great jacket, but the R4 has a loftier fleece inside and out that makes it one of the warmest, if not the warmest fleece jacket on the market.

This Jacket goes anywhere

By:

This jacket is hands down the warmest fleece I own. The thing I love most about the jacket is that it goes anywhere. It keeps me warm on the slopes or out on the trail, but it also looks good out on the town. Quality that's made to last, a purchase you won't regret.

While that specific color is not currently being made, Patagonia does still make the Retro X and releases new colorways every season and something similar is bound to come along. I think the company is aware of the desire for some of their old-school colors and while they are making items in colors that are friendly to the mass market (read: neutral), they will sometimes offer other options.

Toasty.

By:
December 9, 2008

The Retro-X is a superb casual fall/winter jacket. It has very thick piling and the Windstopper barrier is excellent. Mine is a size larger than I would normally wear (Med. instead of Sm.) so that I can use it as a jacket over a sweatshirt or other bulky garment. It wouldn't be my first choice for any sort of hike or other strenuous activity, as it isn't very breathable, but it is perfect for around town/hanging out. And...Patagonia comes out with new color options every year so check out older seasons if you don't see one you like from the newest season.

Zach, I have the same build and have the medium which fits my gorilla length arms but is a little large around the middle. If you don't mind a slightly looser fit around the waist a medium is good.

Lovin the RetroX

By:
March 23, 2009

I got the women's version of this jacket last fall and fell in love with it. It's really warm - it blocks the wind and is perfect over just a t-shirt even in Colorado winter, also it's eco-friendly, being made of recycled polyester, and on top of everything, it's patagonia quality so it lasts forever.

My boyfriend needed a new fleece so I thought of this right away. He loves it almost as much as he loves me now! Girls - if you want your boyfriend to look cool and owe you a good present, I highly recommend the Retro-X.

Hey. I like the gravel color, can you tell me what it looks like in real life? Is it light or dark, it looks like it might have a brownish tint, does it? Or is it just a simple gray?

Mike, gravel in the Retro X is a simple grey, honestly not too dark and not too light(darker than Feather Grey pictured above). There's no brown in it, the image does make it look like it though.

Review Title

By:
November 8, 2009

Hmm, what can I say about this. The 1970's shag rug carpet look is actually pretty awesome. Not only does it look warm, it is warm and windproof! Who knew the shag carpet could be so functional. It's a little on the heavy side and does not breath the best, but it's not the intended purpose. What I love is you get a great functional piece that you can use at base camp or at a bar and still be comfortable.

One size problem that may only affect me. The medium fits perfect all the way around except the neck is too tight while the large is a little bulky but fits my neck great. I went with the medium and the neck stretched out enough to fit perfect. Btw, I am 5'11" and 150 and have what I think is a normal neck.

extremely warm jacket bought this on sac for 60 bucks always a great deal there only problems I have with the jacket are the cuffs are made of that really thin synthetic it's just personal preference but I wish they put in a Velcro cuff and the zipper on mine is kinda crappy and seems like it's going to break soon but I really couldn't find a greater jacket in other brands it's extremely warm and the big pockets are always a plus and if it doesn't breathe well enough when your really working then unzipp all the pockets it works pretty well

this will definitely be warmer overall than the Simple Synchilla since it's windproof. so it depends what you're looking for. Simply Synhilla might be a better all around layering piece where the retro X is more of a jacket

off fitting but great

By:
July 26, 2009

Let me start by saying I love this fleece. I am 6'4 and wear an XL in all patagonia tops/jackets such as the R2 and the R1 flash. This being said the fit on this is weird, the chest is far too big for me but when I tried going to the L size the sleeves were too short, just something to keep in mind. I call this my cookie monster fleece, great look, blocks wind like a champ, too heavy for trail use although would be fine for belaying. 4 stars because the fit is not true to other patagonia tops and there is no draw cord on the bottom.

Go to around town fleece

By:
June 2, 2009

I love the style of this fleece. Its my go to fleece for around town fall/early spring. Not technical enough for physical activity, but great looks. I like that the jacket gets new colors every year, so you don't wind up with people wearing the same jacket at the bar (Denali anybody?) It feels very light for a 300 fleece, and the mesh back breaths better than other 300 fleece. On the down side, it doesn't stop wind as well as other brands of similar weight.

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket

By:
August 24, 2009

The Retro-X Jacket is an incredibly warm fleece jacket. It blocks the wind very well. It is great for late fall and early winter use. It is actually too warm for me to wear in cool weather especially if I am doing something active. It is cut generously and provides excellent range of motion. My only complaint is that the fuzzy material gets matted down from the seat belt or on my back when I sit in the car.

Classic Look Still Mighty Fine

By:
August 11, 2009

I was a little skeptical at first with the Retro but Patagonia stuff fits me perfect (Size L, athletic build) and the Rustic Brown is a departure from black and blue which everyone is sporting. Since the price was half off I took a chance and smiled wide when I saw the quality, felt it's heft and knew right off this puppy will keep you toasty. This will be my hanging around jacket so I'm looking forward to the first frigid morning.

Excellent Jacket, wish there was a Tall Size

By:
March 13, 2009

I'm tall but lean 6'2" and 180lbs. I ordered a medium which was way too small in the body and arms so I returned it for a large and the body length and arm length is OK but the body doesn't fit as snug as I'd like it to (read loose).

Other than that, this jacket is perfect. I've had several ladies just want to touch it. :-)

i'm more huggable when i'm wearing this. it's soft and unbelievably wind resistant for the fluff of the material. not good for precipitation and layering is tough because it's a bit puffy, but sweet for getting hugs and staying warm in not wet conditions.
