Patagonia Capilene Silkweight Crew - Men's - 2006

The Patagonia Capilene Silkweight Crew is constructed from Patagonia's fastest wicking, quickest drying base layer fabric which also happens to feel silky smooth to the touch. You can wear the Silkweight Crew as a layering piece in cold weather, or on its own as a stylish shirt. Capilene pulls moisture away from your skin to the fabric surface where it quickly evaporates, making this superb as a base layer for alpine sports, outerwear for morning runs in brisk temps or casual wear in humid climates. Not too baggy and not too fitted, the Silkweight Crew hangs just right. BACKCOUNTRY.COM TIP: Makes the perfect base layer for spring skiing, if you're an avid skier and used to the cold, or if you tend to overheat in general.

Bottom Line: You barely feel it when you have it on, but when you do, it's dry and silky smooth.

Ok shirt.

MARMOT IS BETTER, SIMPLE AS THAT. I own also a marmot lightweight shirt and it dries faster, its odor for free for much longer period than the Patagonia. The stitches are better and it seems to me that my marmot shirt will last longer. These shirts are a bit on the short side... Cool patter designs anyway.

There's nothing this thing can't be used for

By:

This shirt is utterly amazing. I know it’s not marketed as such, but size down for a tighter fit and this makes an amazing riding jersey! Sized normally there aren’t too many better base layers out there. Go with the short sleeve if you want to stay a little more ventilation when riding, and to stay a little cooler for casual applications.

Fulfills its purpose

By:

Good shirt, true to size, really lightweight. I don’t like the stitches in the shoulder, but no big deal. I'm wondering if the stitches will hold up. It dries really fast, fresh shirt, cool retro stripes.

cotton aint king

By:
March 8, 2003

saw this product in my local outdoor store, but only in black for ski base layer, bought a lighter color from yall,
for summer beach ,hike, canoe trips in the gulf south. much better than cotton. It will try to dry in high heat/humidity
and remains comfortable. tight weave offers protection from sun and bugs, sleeves stay rolled up, and down at night for skeeter proofing. will be looking for more of this fabric in LIGHT colors with less of an underwear look about it.

Excellent Base Layer

By:
October 2, 2003

I used this T-shirt hiking in Morocco. It worked very well wicking moisture away from the body even on the hottest days when there was no wind. The shirt also performed well as a base layer retaining warmth when it was needed at night in the mountains.

Truly Remarkable!

By:
June 19, 2006

Anyone who has stayed in Florida during the summer knows that NOTHING is cool no matter what is advertised. That is, until I bought one of these shirts last year. They are amazing. Absolutely cool no matter what the temp. Wicking immediately, cool to the skin, drying just as fast, warm if the temperature drops, cool if it doesn't. Grab a bunch of them, you won't be disappointed!

Great Summer Shirt

By:
May 30, 2005

I've been wearing light colored long sleeve underwear tops for a couple of years during much of my summer climbing, especially at higher altitudes. I've found that they are no warmer than wearing a short sleeve since they block the sun. They also protect the arms from abrasion.

The silk weight crew is tops for this purpose. Plus the pattern makes it look more like an outerwear shirt.

best in the market

By:
June 22, 2004

The silkweight is the fastest drying highly compressible garment. I won't leave home without it. :)

Wearing it as the only layer feels like you are not wearing a thing. :)

The only one thing I've tried that is faster drying is DriClim Windshirt. However, if people needed to wet their T to cool off and stay wet cotton is better.

my new black shirt!

By:
September 2, 2004

Amazing - this shirt has become a staple in my mountain biking wardrobe. In fact, i'm ordering more! This shirt is super light and weighs next to nothing, and yanks sweat off so it'll evaporate immediately! This shirt just WON'T stay wet, no matter how much you sweat! If you're someone (like me) who doesn't like gaudy huge logos on your clothes, this is for you. GET ONE QUICK, while they're still available!

Totally Sweet

The Capilene Silkweight Crew was everything and more than I expected. When worn under a regular sweat shirt, it keeps you dry and warm, even when working up a sweat climbing and hiking rough terrain in cold temperatures.

Arms too short

By:
August 9, 2006

The sleeves are oddly short. I use this top as an alternative to a silk sleeping bag liner, where this isn't a problem, but I don't use it hiking because it would leave my wrists exposed to the sun.

I have two sets of this product. It is the ultimate "long sleeve t-shirt" It can be worn as a base layer or it can be worn as a great outer layer with a vest or as a t-shirt. Feels like a long sleeve cotton t-shirt w/o the bulk.

Capilene Silkweight

Great product, very comfortable as lightweight base layer. Breathes yet keeps warm. A little pricey, but a good investment for those spending time outside.

Great Silkweight

By:
January 27, 2006

This is a fantastic crew that keeps you dry and stylish. The fit is short for those with really long arms, but it shouldn't be a problem for most. I highly recommend.

Year round usage

By: Backcountry.com Employee
September 17, 2004

God I love this thing. The lightness and smooth feel of the fabric is the greatest part about it. A lot of baselayers have that kind of semi-scratchy texture, but the silkweight is super smooth. Absolutely top notch for comfort.

The lightness of it makes it really great for stuffing in the bottom of a hiking pack just in case, and I barely used anything else all ski season.

On that note: Beware. Silkweight is synthetic, and gets uber-stinky uber-fast. Don't bring just one on a multi-day trip.
