Excellent base layer

I use the Capilene lightweight bottoms underneath a pair of Mountain Hardware nylon climbing pants for 30F days rock climbing at Shelf Road and 3F snowshoe trips around Pike’s Peak. My legs stay warm without ever being too hot or cold. These bottoms and a good pair of technical pants is all you'll need in the lower 48.

It's great

By:

I have used Capilene exclusively when skiing for years. It's the warmest, thinnest, and most comfortable "long underwear" I've ever found. Extremely durable, I've got a pair that's lasted over 5 years. Awesome stuff!

Love that Capilene

I've tried Terramar, REI stuff, and some stuff I got at Sierra Trading Post. Capilene is the best at comfort, thought it is a bit stinky. Hard to get on sale - grab some if you find it!

Just Right

By:

The Capilene Silkweights can be too cold. The Capilene Midweights can be too warm. The Capilene Lightweight Bottoms are just right. I like to use the Lightweights for snowshoeing or even late Fall hiking. There is a reason the Patagonia Capilene products won an Editor's Choice Gold Award from Backpacker magazine. Comfortable, durable, and functional base layers are worth their weight in gold.

Squared-away long johns

By:
February 28, 2005

I've used a lot of various long underwear over the years, and so far these have met my expectations. They are not quite as soft as my old Helly Hanson ones, and I just sort of like the way the North Face ones sit on the skin, but in all, these seem to have the burliest knit...they're super abrasion-resistant, which is good when you use them everyday of the year... They're a little too roomy in the crotch, or maybe I'm just lacking in that department...though I don't think so. ;) Regardless, they're super warm and fit well on my pretty scrawny body...not too much extra material hanging around except south of the crotch. I'd recommend these to anybody.

long what?

By:

These are light and warm, I thought they were too light when I pulled them out of the box... but they kept me comfortable hiking in below freezing temps with just a pair of north face paramount pants as a top layer. I got them as an impulse buy under the current price of $26. Sizing was right on for me. Liked them enough to purchase the lightweight boxers to round out my most recent order and get free shipping.

Love that Capilene!

I purchased these for my husband (I already had a pair for myself) and once again, Patagonia's Capilene came through. Light and comfortable, they keep him warm without adding bulk. Even while running and snowshoeing, these never get cold or clammy. There are now two Capilene lovers in the house! Well worth the price.

Worked like a charm

By:
March 1, 2005

I wore these under a pair of north face freedom pants (little insulation), and even when the temp was 10 to 20 (F) and windy, my legs were happy.

Excellent

By:

I have used Capilene base layers for years and they work so well that I have not wanted to experiment with anything else. Lightweight Capilene and a good pair of Goretex ski pants keep me comfortable in all but the warmest winter weather.
