Patagonia designed the Men’s Backcountry Guide Pant for those who spend more winter days in the mountains than not. This tough softshell pant features a water-resistant, four-way stretch weave for full mobility and waterproof reinforcements on the seat and knees. The brushed interior keeps you comfortable with or without a base layer, and the three-point removable suspenders keep the pant stabilized when you’re popping jump turns or high-stepping up a frozen waterfall. A built-in mini-gaiter keeps out snow and other debris, and the two-way zippered fly lets you drain the main vein without taking everything off.
Bottom Line: Get into this pant, and leave the frontcountry for the gumbies.
These pants are built very well as is to be expected from patagonia. The material is fairly warm for its thickness. However, I returned them because they just never seemed to fit me right. They were a bit to tight through the thighs and were almost impossible to fit over my ski boots. A great product, just a bit too tight for me...
Write your question here...So i am a solid 34 waist in other pants will a 34 be too small if im layering up or did patagonia put some thought into that? also how thick are these pants, are they lined?
I'm a 34 in everything and they don't fit me. Too tight in the thigh (a common complaint) Don't know why Patagonia sized these with very slim thighs, pretty silly for a ski pant and if it weren't for that they'd be great.
I wear a 34 in other Patagonia technical as well as casual pants and a 34 in the Backcountry Guide Pant is perfect for me. I do tend to size most of my pants up slightly, as my actual waist size is closer to a 32. There's plenty of room to layer a piece of two of long underwear. They're a mid-weight softshell with and 8.6 oz fabric and a slight brushed lining inside.
I recently picked up a pair of these in the Llama Brown and they are amazing. The softshell fabric is extremely breathable and lightweight - they make a great backcountry touring pant. With waterproof knees and butt, they also would work great on inbounds days where it is slightly warmer. I am a natural 34 waist, but I purchased a 36 as they are a very athletic fit and size a little small. The 36 fits me perfectly (good room for a capeline underlayer or even performance fleece), but still snug enough so there is not wasted fabric. The pants have side thigh vents, but due to the breathability, they are probably unncessary. My only gripe was that the gaiters on mine are nut very snug on my boots, but I do not anticipate that being a problem. As with most Patagucci products, the construction and quality of these is perfect. I 100% recommend these as a backcountry ski/touring pant.
I purchased a pair of the Patagonia Super Guide Pants back in 2005. I have used them for long ski tours, alpine climbing and ice climbing. The pants are awesome, but I have abused them and I am looking for something similar. What do you recommend?
I'm not familiar with the Super Guide but you won't be disappointed with the Backcountry guide, or if the weather turns a bit warmer try the Alpine Guide. Both supurb pants.
I don't know why anyone would spend $400 on arc'teryx pants when you can get these. They have everything, removable suspenders, 2 way zippers on the fly, and hip vents, reinforced ankles, gaiters, waterproof knees and butt. they are a nice slim cut and a really good weight material. I can get my gore-tex pants over them no problem and they are comfortable. These will be perfect for ice climbing.
Great pants in my book I wear them hiking mostly gators work well just wish they came with a strap for the price of the pants. no biggy, At 15 degrees the pants are a little cold but I wear them slittly loose so a decent pair of long undies or a fleece bottom underneath is enough to keep you warm. good stretch, pokets and zippers, and good venting on warmer days. Id recommend trying them you wont be disappointed
