Pacific Outdoor Equipment InsulMat Max-Thermo Sleeping Pad - 2006
The Pacific Outdoor Equipment InsulMat Max-Thermo Sleeping Pad is a three-season inflatable mat that's super warm and surprisingly light weight. The Max-Thermo received the 2004 Backpacker Editors' Choice Award. Super durable tent floor grade 70D nylon ensures you'll enjoy season after season on your Max-Thermo. Six-tube construction provides superior insulation. It's easily inflated through a redesigned anodized aluminum valve, so you can snooze in sublime comfort.
Bottom Line: Lightweight, insulative, and comfortable, the Max-Thermo will become your favorite piece of camping gear.
Wonderful pad! I was a little wary at first, since one review said that it took too long to inflate. However, my experience did not support this, as it took very little time to inflate with the usual huff-and-puff method. It keeps you very warm and snuggly. I highly recommend this product.
Since my purchase, I've only had the chance to use my mat on one trip. That being said, this mat delivers all that it promises. Great comfort, great durability (so far), easy to use, packs up light and small, and reasonably warm for three season use. I slept on one in a Marmot Pinnacle (15 degree) bag at about freezing, and the pad stayed quite warm, allowing my bag to keep me super warm (slept unzipped all night). Highly recommended!
This baby rolls up SO SMALL, is SO LIGHT, and keeps me SO COMFY, I don't know how I slept with my thermarest. Yeah you have to blow it up but it takes just a minute and is SOOOO worth it! I've slept on bare snow and been totally warm. I like the fact that the catendary cut eliminates the corners which you don't lay on which saves weight. That means you can have a pad that has primaloft insulation at the same weight of a similar pad with no insulation.
This pad is my new all around pad for fall through spring. i have used it on 2 trips and the comfort is great. the temperature i have taken down to was right at 30F and had no problems and would feel comfortable taking it down lower probably 15F, before i would use a 3/4 length closed cell pad on top. this pad works well with big agnes bags that use a mummy shaped sleeping pad sleeve or the western mountaineering pod sleeping bags but works great with regular sleeping bags as well. because of the mummy shape a little extra attention to your position on the mat is required to keep your feet from rolling off if your in a regular bag without the sleeve to hold it in place, but after a few minutes i had n problems. very lightweight for the comfort and temps that it can be used in. it recently won an editors choice award in backpacker magazine for 2004. i highly recommend this pad
"Can one pad be light in the pack, cushy under your backside, and insulating in cold weather? Our Southwest editor says yes after she used the Max Thermo on a late fall trip to the Grand Canyon. It's smaller when stuffed than a loaf of bread and more than 2 inches thick when inflated, and the six separate air tubes are filled with fine synthetic fibers that add warmth for near-freezing nights. For an air mat, it's easy to blow up."
Now that I am north of 40 years old I need a little extra padding at night. The Insulmat Max Thermo Sleeping Pad seems to have done the trick. For years I have used a 3/4 length Thermarest pad for the convenience of self-inflating and low weight. Although the Insulmat is not self-inflating it is very lightweight and, at 2 1/2 inches thick, it is very comfortable. The only negative I have found so far is spending the time to blow it up. Overall, it is a good buy.
This pad is excellent. It's small yet blows up easily to 2 1/2 inches of comfort. I recently used it in the Pecos wilderness where it rained and reached 36 degrees at night but I was warm and comfortable thanks to the insulation!
Pad did great on a 5 day self-support kayak trip and an additional three nights of car camping. Very comfy, light, duarble, convenient, packs small. No complaints!!!
For years I used a closed-cell foam pad or a self-inflating pad. I finally decided to get an InsulMat Max-Thermo to see if would make a difference. Wow, I never knew how much sleep I was losing. A good night's sleep means I have more energy on the trail and a more enjoyable hike if Im out there for a several days. It's a bit narrower than I was hoping but I have no complaints. It stuffs to about the size of a small loaf of bread and weighs far less than my self-inflating pad. Inflating it only takes a few min which I make up for by sleeping all night.
Used for two weeks sleeping on rocky shores in Alaska. The mat performed great. It easily fit between my sleeping bag and bivy sack. The small size when stowed is a huge plus when space and weight are a concern. The mat combined with a decent set of ear plugs easily kept pesky brown bears from waking me up at night (a big plus for me but maybe not for others).
This pad's thickness is great for warmth and comfort, but its hard to stay on the pad. I am 6'2" and 190lb, and the pad seems just a little too small. But overall it is a pretty good pad.
This pad packs down really well. 2 1/2" off the ground. Please keep your hands and feet on the pad or is a long drop ! I return my cause it had a slow leak that's hard to patch. Close cell/open cell together rules!
Very nice and comfortable sleeping pad. Inflation is easy; small pack size and weight. Kept me comfortable and warm throughout a recent 35 degree rainy and windy night.
The Insulmat Max Thermo is the most comfortable sleeping pad I've used for backpacking. It's much more comfortable than both the Thermarest & the Basic Designs Ergomat I've used for years. It's much lighter than both and rolls up to a very small cylinder in my pack. It is a little narrow but I haven't had any problems staying on it (maybe due to the vertical air channels). The long size is perfect for my lanky 6'5" frame. It does require a few breaths to inflate, but it's worth it. I'm finally sleeping well in the backcountry!
The durability, light weight, and compact packing size are fantastic. I find that it is most comfortable at 80% of fill capacity. I'm a tosser and turner. I did not loose a wink of sleep at any point on three trips now. Great mat, buy one today!
I have a very large Big Agnes pad that is very comfortable. I decided to get this one also since it is lighter and can be filled up quicker. First of all, this type of air mattress absolutely excels when compared to the Therm-a-rest self-inflating pads. The InsulMat is so much more comfortable, with a 2.5" layer of air. As one reviewer said, fill it up only until your hip is just barely above the ground all night. I love this pad because it insulates but it is lightweight and packs up small. As far as I'm concerned, it is no big deal that it is not self-inflating. I have a large pad and it takes me less than 10 breaths to fill it. I am okay with 10 breaths when it means significantly lighter and smaller gear. The only thing I don't like about this pad is that it is just not quite wide enough for me to have a place to rest my arms when I sleep on my back. But it's no big deal since I'm a side sleeper, which I can comfortably do with this pad.
HI, I purchased the Insulmat and tried it out as soon as I got it. I'm 6'4" & 210lbs. The quality seemed good but the thing wasn't big enough to support my arms or shoulders. I ended up getting a Thermarest Prolite 4 which worked a lot better for someone of my size.
The Insulmat is all it appears to be. Tiny and light, blows up in a minute to a very comfortable and warm mattress. Although we have not given it the test of time, appears to be very solid and strong product. Go for it.
This pad is woefully inferior to Big Agnes' Insulated Core pads, which utilize I-beam construction, giving a much flatter sleeping surface while doing a much better job of insulating (think sleeping bag construction). I used them both before returning the InsulMat-Thermo.
Wow! What a great pad. I have been using a 3/4 Z-Rest for many years. I did not like the weight of a Therm-a-rest. I turn 50 this year and sleeping on such a thin pad has made my joints stiff. Not with this pad. I was out for four nights and it was almost like being in my own bed. No sore joints or stiffness. You need this pad.
