Petzl Myobelt XP Headlamp - 2006

You'll appreciate the excellent cold-weather performance of the Petzl Myobelt XP Headlamp the next time you're in the mountains at 2:00am in freezing weather. Regular headlamps run out of energy very quickly when cold weather saps their power, but he Myobelt XP has a remote battery pack that can be worn inside your jacket to keep it warm and keep the light going. A single ultra-bright LED bulb provides light up to 65m in boost mode and lasts for 55 hours when it's set on the lowest setting. For close-up work, or reading in the tent, flip up the wide-angle lens to spread out the light.

Bottom Line: When cold weather is killing your partner's headlamp, the Petzl Myobelt XP keeps going strong.

myobelt xp

I purchased the Myobelt XP to use during night trail running on very rocky and rugged trails that have tons of ups and downs. The lamp has served me well, as it provides enough light for me to move at about 90% of my daytime speed. If you will be using on trails with consistent footing, you should be able to keep up your normal pace. I agree with other reviewers that you can forget about changing the brightness with gloves on, however, while I am using it I adjust the angle and set the brightness as I begin, so it is not a big issue. If you plan to need to adjust it frequently with gloves on, it may not be the best choice. The long life that batteries have with this lamp is a huge plus for me since I use it for 6 or more hours each week. Bottom line, if used for running, I highly recommend it.

Heavy cord and small controls

By:

This light is quite bright and the batteries last. The controls on top of the lamp are a little complicated to use when it is mounted on your head and you are wearing gloves. Petzl could have done a better job on the controls. Also, the cord that runs from the light to the batteries is very heavy. I would have preferred a lighter cord and lighter connection between the cord and battery pack. I haven't tried any other lights with external batteries.

Petzl MyoBelt headlamp

By:
September 11, 2006

I just used my new Petzl MyoBelt headlamp on a 5 day elk hunt, and was very pleased with the functionality of the lamp. The battery life was excellent (never changed batteries), and the 3 light settings were helpful although I used the 'high' setting most of the time for visibility while walking through the black timber. My only gripe, a minor one, was that the switches at the top of the lamp are a little difficult to use, especially in total darkness. Overall it is a great lamp, and I would highly recommend it. The only reason I'm not rating it a '5' is because I haven't used enough other lamps to give it a proper comparison.
