Just when you think LED lights can't get any better, Petzl comes out with the Tikka XP Headlamp. This single LED lamp has a range of up to 35 meters and still maintains a 120-hour maximum battery life. The Tikka XP also has a boost mode which gives you 50% more power for 20 seconds and a tiltable light body lets you direct that light where you need it. When your batteries finally start to wear down, the battery life indicator light will let you know so you will never be caught in the dark.
Bottom Line: All the light you need for as long as you want.
I recently purchased your Petzl Tikka XP Headlamp and I am impressed! I am a Cpl in the United States Marine Corps serving as a helicopter mechanic and it just so happens I'm on night crew. We got issued some headlamps, dont know what brand, but they broke pretty fast. My dad recommended Petzl and quite honestly it has amazing range. The fine beam and fanned beam are excellent, and it's easier to use since you dont have to cycle through every brightness just to turn it off. I recommend this headlamp for sure.
There is not a more usable headlamp out there. This has three settings, plus turbo boost. The diffuser works great and it has a long battery life. This is lightweight, and its five times better than my old Petzel Micro or Zoom. I also compared to a couple others. Unless you like blue tinted light, or you just need a spotlight, get the Tikka XP.
I don't have much time to write a review, but let me tell you your not wasting money buying this product. Petzl did a superb job creating this headlamp. The Three modes, in addition to the wide beam spectrum or straight shot, make this awesome. And when you really need to see something, light up the booster beam. Goes twice as far as the regular with twice the intensity. Overall this headlamp kicks butt. Buy it.
For the size, weight, battery life, and brightness this is the best thing going. I like the fact that you have so much in such a small package without a battery pack on the back of your head or anywhere else. I would recommend using NiMH rechargables in this light. You get a much longer more steady bright beam. The only problem is when they are done, they are done.
I am very pleased with this headlamp. It is light, pardon the pun, and functional. Great lighting choices (i.e.: everything from a little light to a lot and focused or "flood"/spread lighting.) I like it so much, I will be getting another and getting rid of all my other headlamps!
I have not used it much yet, but the Tikka XP headlamp is great. Its very bright for only three AAA batteriesas bright as a 2 AA Maglight with spot beam, and it also has a diffuse beam pattern. The vertical angle adjusts, which is a must for those with variable-focus glasses. Too bad it costs so much. Guess you get what you pay for.
This headlamp works very well. The different light intensity settings are awesome, and the boost comes in handy more than you'd think. Aside from the slightly inflated price, this headlamp will definitely brighten your day!
I really like how much light power is packaged into this small format. It is bright! It sits well on your head as well. The lens swapping capability is also nice because it puts the light right where you need it. I use it a lot for working on the car as well as for other outdoor activity.
The only improvements I can see is to add a current regulator to maintain constant brightness when the battery starts to die out. It would also be nice if the outer shell was made out of heat sink metal (for heat dissipation) so that the boost mode can be sustained longer.
Holy cow! This is a fantastic headlamp. I got it for a 10 mile hike in and found it to be super comfortable and incredibly bright. Others in the group complained about not being able to see 5 feet in front of themselves while I was looking up canyon walls 100ft high. The diffuser works wonders. This is a must have for serious night hikes.
I've owned a lot of headlamps, including Petzl, Princeton-tec, and BD, all of which have proven to be great. However, I think the best little lamp I've ever owned is the Tikka XP. When lying down in the tent to read, the absence of a battery pack in the back is appreciated. The ability to switch from spot to flood is awesome. Battery life is great too. Petzl is a great company and they got this one right.
Headlamp won Backpacker's Editors Choice this year so I figured it couldn't be bad. I used all settings of the beam and had success cooking, writing, and night hiking. I used it for a number of hours each night and the 3AAA batteries didn't have any problem lasting the week that I was out hiking. For one LED it produces a lot of light. Did find the light on one day after hiking as it had accidentally been turned on at some point during my travels that day. Remedied by storing it in a different spot in my pack. Overall, recommended to anyone looking for a lightweight headlamp.
Upgraded from an older Tikka to this, and saw a huge difference. High quality construction, just the right amount of light on econo-mode, and plenty of distance on high power. Only improvement would be interchangeable colored lenses for preserving night vision (a military version includes these, but it's tough to find).
We received our Tikka headlamps, and couldn't be more satisfied. We plan an using them for a backpack trip in Colorado, but last night my wife used hers while repairing a broken kitchen cabinet. The focused light really helped the job go easier. I was in the World Trade Center during the first bombing, 1993. Coming down from the 107th floor in a pitch- black stairwell, you instantly realize the value of light. That day I would have paid $1,000 for a Tekka Headlamp. Everyone should have one.
I use it for dog walking at night and other around-the-house tasks so I have not taken it far from home yet, but it is comfortable and quite bright. It sends a beam a bit farther than the Zipka headlamp which I also have, but that one is smaller and can be worn on the wrist if needed. They are a nice compliment to each other. Would definitely recommend!
This headlamp is suitable for slow going, or surfaces that are not irregular. Not enough light to safely trail run at night, and barely light enough to run on the road (assuming no street lights). For night hikes or walks it works fine. Seems sturdy enough, and easy to use though the buttons might be difficult to manage with gloves on. It could also use a focusable beam and it would be nice if the strap were easy to remove for washing. There isn't really anything better out there though.
Just purchased this bad boy from another site but wanted to write a review anyway. This lamp is great. It has a battery indicator (lighted), comfortable to wear and will cut-off immediately rather than having to cycle through all the different settings of bright (a plus compared to cheaper models). I also opted for the color diffuser kit(red, green, blue lenses) for an extra 5 bucks. There is a new 2006 tactical model as well that is khaki and/or camoflauge. Great Light.
