Petzl Myo XP Headlamp - 2006

The Petzl Myo XP headlamp is one of Petzl's newest innovations. It runs just one super bright LED with four lighting levels and BOOST mode. BOOST mode provides 50% more light than the brightest level for 20 seconds so you can get down the sketchy descent or make sure your steaks are grilled to perfection. Perfect for alpine climbing, adventure racing, trail running, hiking, or any activity where you're wearing the headlamp for extended periods. A diffuser lens lets you choose between wide range projection or proximity lighting. The Myo XP will burn up to 170 hours on economy mode. An indicator light shows low battery and a reminder to switch to economy power. The tilting lamp focuses on the trail ahead.

Bottom Line: Get BOOST power and get lit.

Petzl Myo XP headlamp

Worked very well for Alpine start summit days and options on the lamp extended the life during the climb. This worked better than previous versions of headlamps we had used.

Myo XP is good but...

By:
August 10, 2006

My first headlamp was a Petzl Zoom that used a halogen bulb and that worked fine. I was able to light-up the river as I row in the night in search of crocodiles. I could spot the eyeshine of a croc over 100m away and so I was a little concerned about swithcing to this new led light technology, Myo XP. It worked like a charm. I could light up the entire river and even glance down into the water column. On land i had no need for a bulky flashlight it all worked well except... Those damn tiny buttons on the top. forget about operating them with thick gloves on, it is already difficult with just my hands. I really think Petzl could have done a lot better in designing those buttons (and the flip down/flip up diffuser lens), hell, i could have designed them better. I guess i'll get used to it. Do I regret getting the Myo XP. NOPE!

This thing rocks!

I love everything about this headlamp. I use it for adventure racing, camping, night time trail running, and ski mountaineering. I was considering a MYO 5, but decided to give this a shot. I was worried that maybe the LED wouldn't give me enough light for night time orienteering (part of adventure racing), but there's an amazing amount of light output, and definitely enough. I could even see using it for mountain biking if not too technical. I like having different light output, but mostly I use the high beam, because there's still tons of battery life on high. The "blast" is great for when you are close to an orienteering CP and want to scan around to see if it's nearby. So far it has proven water proof, but I haven't submerged it, and I might try and seal the battery compartment up with electrical tape if I was in really wet conditions. The design is awesome with the diffuser lens, and also the ability to tilt it just so for the right angle for running etc. When you push it all the way up it prevents the light from being turned on in your pack—CRITICAL. This is one of those products I think will be with me for a long time.

Myo XP

By:
August 22, 2005

I have had numerous headlamps for various jobs and as headlamps improve I will upgrade. I have always used Princeton Tec in the past because they were lighter, cheaper and brighter / more advanced, but in the past month I bought a Tikka Plus (with red lens) for work and the Myo XP for backpacking and I'm very impressed with both. The Myo XP is the lightest / brightest headlamp I've ever used. It is very easy to use with relatively easy to get at buttons (maybe not with gloves?) and the light "diffuser" for generalized lighting is genius.

Bright, but far from perfect

By:
July 19, 2005

I rushed out to buy this newest release from Petzel for just that reason; it was the newest release. I'm not terribly happy with my decision.

It's the brightest led headlamp I've ever used, I'll give it that. It's also relatively lightweight for a AA lamp, and mine has already survived a couple of really nasty rainstorms without any malfunctions. The diffuser lens works well, throwing a very even wide area beam, bright enough for several people to navigate in the dark by.

But the switch is small and very difficult to use, especially if you're cold or wearing gloves. It has a safety function to keep the lamp from turning on in your pack, but it only works if the lens is rotated all the way flat against the bevel, and I never remember to rotate my lamp back into that position when I take it off or put it away.

Likewise, the diffuser lens, which does its job so well, has a tiny little protrusion on the end that you have to get a fingernail under to open or close, so you really can't switch between a sharp spot and wide angle beam without really fiddling with it. And if you're hands are muddy then forget it; you'll smudge the lens and block out most of your light.

The elastic headband is fine, though not terribly easy to adjust. I've been wearing mine without the optional third top strap, and it seems to be just fine. The battery pack is in the back, which means I can't wear this lamp with my bike helmet or under my climbing helmet, requiring that I use headlamp mounting hardware to wear it on the outside.

The only real reason I can see to buy the MYO XP is if you're one of those people who always has to have the newest and best gadget. It's certainly bright enough that you'll be the envy of your party after dark or early in the morning, but the difficulty of use and the steep price tag are enough of a deterrent that I wouldn't recommend this lamp to my friends.

Myo XP headlamp

By:

I love this head lamp. I didn't realize what I was missing with my old led headlamp. When you read the description you see the advantages. I am unable to find any cons for this product. Some might say the price, but once you use it for hiking trails at night then switch the diffuser up, you will love the 3 watt bulb. Very impressive.

A basic new tool

By:
May 3, 2006

I bought this headlamp for use indoors doing detail work with small paintbrushes during the cutting-in process of painting a room. My idea was that good light in exactly the right place, and from exactly the right angle in relation to my eyes, would help me to be able to see what I was trying to paint. Sounds like a no-brainer, but I had done a fair amount of painting using only ambient light and/or a standard mechanics work light. The results are very positive. I can, if I want, actually paint well in a dark room.

worth the bucks

Now they come out with a Mayo belt as well! I love this headlamp. The thing is like a search light. Great for night climbing and searching for bolts. The diffuser gets used 80% of the time. This headlamp never leaves my pack. Seems to get good battery life.
