Petzl Zipka Plus Headlamp - 2006

The Petzl Zipka Plus is an upgraded version of the top-selling Zipka with these additional features: 4 LED's instead of 3, a push on/off button instead of a slider switch, and 3 brightness settings with strobe function. The Zipka's immense popularity is due to its immense functionality. From housewife to hardcore mountaineer, it seems as though everybody finds the Zipka the handiest of tools. At 2¼ ounces, there's no excuse for venturing into the backcountry without one of these in your pack. Four LED bulbs powered by 3 AAA batteries (included) cast bright white light over relatively short distances (30ft or 10m), making the Zipka Plus perfect for trail hiking, setting up camp, and reading. The Zipka Plus is the same headlamp as the Tikka Plus, except that a retractable wire strap system replaces the elastic headband, making it even more compact and lightweight than the Tikka Plus. It also lacks the tiltable housing of the Tikka Plus. Attach this headlamp to your wrist, tent pole or anywhere else you can think of.

Bottom Line: Backpackers and Campers: this is a MUST for your gear closet.

Great for dog walks

By:
January 30, 2007

Can't beat the convenience of the Zipka Plus. Since it retracts into a tidy package, there are no unwieldy straps flopping around getting tangled with everything else in my fanny pack, which means I don't mind carrying it, which means it's always there when I need it. Great for dog walks or whenever you want to have your hands free, just slip it over your wrist.

zipka : the lightweight wonder

By:
February 21, 2005

I used this little baby on the Appalachian Trail in 2001, and I must say that I really liked the itty bitty size of this thing. It’s so small that I could put it anywhere in my pack or in my pocket. My Zipka was plenty bright enough while hiking at night on the trail, settting up camp in the dark, reading or anything that I had to do on the trail. Battery life is excellent! My Zipka always worked when I needed it. My only complaint is: when I wore the Zipka for long periods of time, the little wire would begin to really dig into my head.

Zipka Plus

Even better than the original. I especially like the push button instead of a slide switch, and its having three brightness levels along with a flashing function (psych-o-del-ic, man). A great little light.

Great for reading

By:
September 16, 2003

On my list of all time best products. Nearly perfect for reading at night (the only flaw, a very slight "hot spot" on the page caused by the beam reflector). Quite light and comfortable when head-mounted, but it's goofy enough looking that you'll not want to forget you have it on!

All purpose light

By:
October 21, 2003

This little lamp is great. It has 4 modes, 3 brightnesses, and flash. Lightweight, go a long, long time between battery changes. Very versatile, use for more than camping. Great flashlight. I use it for all sorts of things besides camping and hiking.

Super Light

I live on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and always want to stay prepared for storms. The Zipka Plus Headlamp is just what I was looking for. It is compact, very bright, and the batteries have a long life.

Lots of light in a little package.

By:
February 10, 2004

Amazing! I've used it snowshoeing, reading, fixing something on my car in the dark; you name it, it can do it. Small package, and it doesn't move around on your head at all. It's worth every penny.

It's just okay.

By:
February 13, 2004

For tooling around the house or garage, I suppose it does a good job. As a volunteer fireman, I wanted to use this as a clip-on light for my helmet. It's not as durable, or as bright as I thought it was going to be. I was a little disappointed. Well, at least my son has a cool $40 flashlight to play with.

Really great that there is a headlamp with an easy push button for on-off, it was cumbersome with the petzl slide switch for on-off.

The best

By:
April 26, 2004

I bought this for my husband who is deployed overseas. He takes it everywhere, and says it is one the best things he has to work with over there. He absolutely loves it.

Small but Bright

By:
February 3, 2005

This versatile headlamp is extremely compact and light weight. I keep it in my daypack for emergencies, but also use it around camp, hut, and home. The battery life (up to 150 hours on three AAA batteries) is exceptional. With three levels of brightness, it provides plenty of light for close tasks and is bright enough for traveling at night. The retractable headband provides versatility for wearing the headlamp on the head or wrist, attaching it to handlebars or pack, or hanging it. My only worry is the durability of the retractable band and mechanism, but so far I’ve had no cause for concern.

Great little light!

By:
June 16, 2004

This is a great light. I wear it every night to read in bed w/o disturbing my husband. It's much more convenient than a book light and the battery life is very long. I first learned about it from my brother, who has a Zipka. This one is even better, with a easy-to-find switch and 4 light choices. In a recent power outtage, my husband and I both wore one. It was very convenient b/c it kept our hands free.

Zipka Plus headlamp

By:
January 27, 2005

Use it every day while exercising the dog at zero dark hours. Love it. I have 2 older style headlamps, one Petzl and one Princeton. Neither one lasts nearly as long on a set of batteries. The Zipka Plus has a limited range compared to the older Petzl micro, but the white light and battery life of the Zipka Plus is what impressed me most, plus the different power setting is a bonus. The only change I'd suggest is to make it a little tighter for weather resistance or have a rubber seal.

Goes Everywhere with Me

By:
August 15, 2006

I always have this headlamp in my duffle or pack since it's so handy. It's great for use around the house, under the hood of the car, going for a walk at night, and around camp. The retractable line is very useful; you can put it on your head (though they tend to leave marks on your head after a while and can get uncomfortable) or on your wrist for hands-free use. The batteries last a long, long time. Plenty of light even for light trail use at night, though I use a Princeton Tec EOS for that. Great little light.

I love how small this Zipka Headlamp is and how useful it is. I don't like the feel on my head, but you can put it around anything, and it is super tight. My wife likes taking it in her purse, too, for car emergencies or whatever. Sweet little lamp, great for the car!

By:

I bought this in anticipation of a backpacking trip in the Canyonlands--I have been using it at home when I go into deep dark closets; also bought one for my dad who I found in the dark basement 'just checking it out'. This little light rocks!!

What did I do without this lamp?

By:
December 1, 2004

I've had the Zipka Plus headlamp for a few weeks now, and I wonder what I did before I got it. I know, I worked either 1) one handed, 2) mute (flashlight in mouth), or 3) in the dark. I swear a day hasn't gone by that I haven't used it for something. This lamp totally ROCKS.

small and light!

By:
May 23, 2005

The Zipka headlamp is the smallest lightest headlamp I have owned. I love the way the strap retracts into the lamp. This allows the user to carry this light around in a small pocket or the top of the pack, taking up hardly any room. The amount of light it puts out is plenty for what it is used for. Every backcountry explorer should carry one of these in their pocket!

If you need a headlamp...

By:
September 20, 2005

If you need a headlamp, this is the one to get. It has three bright settings (strobe too) and because of the expandable cord, not only can you easily attach it to your head, but also on your wrist or whatever circumference you can find. This is a good buy!

Zipka plus

I am in the military and have the original zipka and wanted the upgrade and it has proved outstanding. The light lasts forever and is the most comfortable headlamp in existence. Great product worth the money.

Tested in the Gobi Desert

By:
June 20, 2005

The Zipka Plus Headlamp is strong, light, and versatile. We were especially surprised by the brightness and efficiency as the batteries lasted for a full week of trekking through the Gobi Desert. We initially felt that we would be giving up some durability with the retractable head band but it continues to work after 6 months of use. If “going light” is a goal, this is your choice.

NEW Improved Zipka Plus

By:
March 20, 2006

I have owned Petzl Zipka for at least three years. I only replace the batteries once a year, though I use the light regularly around the house and out BBQing at night. I recently looked at purchasing more for family. In September 2005 they IMPROVED the Zipka with stronger LED and it will last longer. I only have the old one; it’s great!
I own a banded LED headlamp; I prefer this one!

Great lamp

By: Backcountry.com Employee
October 21, 2003

When you open the box you'll wonder where the rest of it is. This lamp is seriously small, but gives off serious light. The half that sits on your forehead has some kind of breathable friction pad on it that keeps it from slipping.
