Perception Essence Series Kayak - 2008

A multi-position, retractable skeg on the Perception Essence Series Kayak adds stability on windy or choppy days, so this kayak tracks smoothly without feeling like it'll tip over if you sneeze. Perception knows kayak seats can be a literal pain in the ass to sit on for an all-day tour. So, they made the Essence Kayak with a comfortable, formed seat, an adjustable backrest and footrests, and padded, adjustable thigh braces. This sea kayak's bow and stern hatches hold your lunch and other gear, while the day-hatch gives you quick access to maps and sunscreen. Choose the 17-foot Essence for a roomier ride, or the 16.5-foot for lighter-weight, smaller paddlers.

Bottom Line: Add skeg stability and control to a sea kayak and you get Perception's Essence Series Kayak.

Can a 14.5' kayak be transported on a standard roof rack?

Can a 14.5' kayak be transported on a standard roof rack? I'd like to not spend a fortune on a trailer. Any recommendations?

More than likely, yes. Any of the typical suv crossbar racks (explorer, grand cherokee, 4runner) are more than sturdy enough to carry a kayak of that length and weight. I would simply buy some cross bar pads and some good tie downs.

Depends upon how they are cared for. Leave it in the sun all day every day without using a UV protectant on it and it will deteriorate within 10 or fewer years.Take proper care of it and it will last you a long long while

Absolutly. I've done many trips in the 5-6 day range in boats smaller than this. I was able to carry ample gear, including water and food. Any 16-17ft kayak with hatches should have enough capacity.
