Patagonia packed partially recycled synthetic insulation and weather protection into the lightweight Men's Micro Puff Vest. Wear the water-repellent Micro Puff as a wind blocker or mid-layer. If the Micro Puff Vest's warmth is too much, just stuff it into its interior stash pocket and put in your backpack.
Bottom Line: The Patagonia Micro Puff adds warmth without much weight or bulk.
I have had this vest for over five years, and I still love it. It has been great for every activity I do, because it helps to regulate my temperature very well. It's a great piece to toss on after getting out of your sleeping bag in the morning and stashing it before the start of the hike. Also, the synthetic material let me dry out my top layer while loading boats and helped me warm up after many of cold days on the river. The elastic around the shoulder cuffs took a while to get used to, but they do a great job of sealing heat. Plus, it looks like they added baffles to prevent the insulation from bulking up.
Overall great quality as the other reviewers have mentioned.
This is a fantastic vest. I researched a in stores and on a ton of websites before finally deciding to buy the Patagonia MicroPuff from this site. I have a hard shell (Cloudveil Coven Plus) and this Patagonia vest is the perfect complement. I took my first trip of the year out to Vail a couple weeks ago and this vest kept me warm on the chair, but still breathes well as you work up a sweat in the bumps. Plus, the Patagoia Microff is versatile because I wear it around town or my apartment. Good stuff here!
I would do a medium if you want to do layering underneath, or a small if you plan on wearing the jacket over thin layers or shirts. These run a little big.
I really like this vest for cool, but not so cold weather. If you're looking for something that will handle cold, go with the classic Patagonia Down Vest (though it's usually $145). This one is a no-nonsense synthetic vest that slips on easily. However I had an issue with the cut/size of the jacket. Generally I fit a Patagonia small perfectly. This one seemed to be cut shorter so that I was probably in between a small and medium which was a bummer. Overall, this is a good piece.
Do not ignore the importance of core warmth or lose sight of the value of unencumbered arms. This vest serves a critical outdoor function hiking or otherwise. Plus it folds into its own pocket--its own pocket!!!. This vest is golden - I love Patagonia it would be great if I could afford all of their stuff - well maybe not their green and yellow stuff. the micro puff vest is a keeper I promise! sizing is on target for example medium is my standard size and over the r2 the puff fits like a glove. w/out a fleece its a tad loser but far from messy.
As you'll see be my other reviews, I'm a fan of Patagonia gear. Always can count on quality construction and attention to detail and this vest follows suit. I keep this vest in my ski pack and use it on the days when I get the chill under my shell. It retains warmth very well, packs away into it's own pocket nicely and doesn't feel bulky as an underlayer (plus the nylon fabric is smooth and doesn't catch). I also find myself using it after I get off the mountain to keep my core warm while sittin' on the deck and drinkin' a few suds. Overall solid layer. Only complaint I'd have is to remove a bit of material under the arms and make the armholes more snug.
This is a very light warm vest. Patagonia medium normaly fits me like a glove but this vest seems to be inbetween sizes on the large size. I'm 6'1" 170 lbs.
Jeremy - I'm also 6'1" and 170 lbs, so your saying the medium is too big and that you should have gotten a medium, or should I go with the medium? I've never worn a small before . . .
This is one of the gears that I always carry in my travel backpack. The other one is the Marmot driclime windshirt. Very light, yet warm. Perfect as it is in a warmer weather (50 - 70). Works great as a mid-layer in a very cold weather.
I wear this thing as my only outer layer in 20 deg temps. If you layer right underneath it does the job - sure your arms get chilly but it is a vest, after all.
Perfect for layering: I wear a base layer, this vest, and a bombproof HH shell on the slopes and I'm fine - even need pit zips open half the time!
I really like the weight of this vest it is the perfect spring skiing vest with a basic base layer underneith. It is an exact fit. I usually wear a XL jacket but I bought a size L.
I wear XL in all patagonia jackets and the XL in this fits fine. Very warm for the weight, folds into one of its own pockets. You can use this on summer nights over a tshirt or in the fall over a wool baselayer, even in the winter over a fleece and under a shell. So basically I just said you can use it any time of the year... get one.
It is amazing how much difference some extra torso insulation can make. This is thin enough that it can be worn under just about any outer-layer, but still breathes fairly well. It can even be worn over just a long-sleeve baselayer, providing more warmth (and wind protection) than you might think. And it packs small, so it is easy to take it off and pack it mid-day when the weather starts to warm up.
