Outdoor Research Trio Jacket - Men's

Why bother with a quiver of jackets when you can have the versatility of the Outdoor Research Men’s Trio Jacket? This three-in-one jacket features a Pertex waterproof breathable shell with a zip-out insulated liner for a jacket option in any conditions. When it’s cold as ice and spitting sleet, wear both pieces together. For chilly but dry conditions, the EnduraLoft-insulated liner has you covered, and for soggy or humid days where you just need weather protection, zip up the waterproof Pertex shell. A zip-out powder skirt works with either the shell or the liner for further versatility.

Bottom Line: Turn one jacket into three. Crazy, right?

How will this jacket fair in -20 F with 20mph wind. I need to know if i'm going to stay warm on the mountain.

Those are some pretty brutal conditions you're looking at DWJ. I'd look at something a little more hearty than the Trio jacket. Personally, I prefer to layer my jackets for my mountain excursions. Usually I'll put a light fleece under my OR Transcendent Sweater (down insulated) and then my OR Mentor Jacket (Gore-Tex) on top. I would suggest going that route as the insultion on most 3 in 1 jackets is "medium warmth" at best.

Not a bad jacket, just missing things

By:
December 14, 2009

This isn't a bad jacket, it works, it will keep you warm and dry. It's just missing some things that should be here and has poor execution on other things.

It has no inside wind flap behind the zipper. Fine, okay, it has one on the outside. But there is nothing to protect your chin from the zipper. Other jackets I own have something, even a square of nylon. Not this jacket. If it's cold out, your chin is going to be resting on cold zipper. Not ideal.

It's lacking in pockets. It has two pockets on the shell and two pockets on the liner. That's it (aside from the arm pocket, which I'll get to in a second). There are no chest pockets whatsoever on the inside or outside of the shell or the liner. That's too bad.

The velcro around the wrists to tighten the cuffs is woefully short. It doesn't come anywhere near tightening enough to keep weather out. And when you tighten it as much as you can to get gloves over the cuffs, the tightening strap is sticking up so much because it has no velcro to attach to that the glove often catches it and undoes it.

It also is missing "pulls" on the the drawcords around the lower hem. They are impossible to grab and tighten on the go when you have any type of glove on. Not good.

It's a neat idea that the snow skirt zips out of the shell and zips into the liner. This gives some nice options for changing things up. But the liner is considerably shorter than the shell and too short to be used alone in the snow. Any spills and you'll have snow up your back.

The arm pocket zipper is very hard to open and close. I never use it because of this.

This is a good looking jacket, it works well in bad weather, keeps me warm and dry. It has a great hood. But a number of things make me wish for a different jacket. I purchased it on the spur of the moment from Steep and Cheap.

My first jacket was a Marmot. It's kind of like when I rented a car a few years ago that didn't have cruise control. I thought "they still make cars without cruise control?" It didn't dawn on me to even check.

Same with this jacket. I guess some things I took for granted on my Marmot jacket. Now I'll remember what to look for in the future.

Outdoor Research doesn't even offer a waterproof rating but I can speak from experience. This jacket has been in extreme wet/windy conditions. Mine kept me dry as a bone and breathes extremely well! You'll love it.Hope that helps.

A nice Pertex Jacket

By:
May 16, 2009

A very light weight water repellent jacket. A good value. Tends to run small so move up a size if you can.
Could use more pockets. Only two useable pockets in the shell.
Pertex is a light weight water repellent material that stretches when you move.
Find a sale and pick one up. Don't pay more than $110.

had higher expectations for a $280 jacket

By:
June 9, 2009

The jacket is decent, but not amazing. The inside jacket is extremely flimsy (and not very attractive--I don't think I would ever wear it by itself). It is a shiny material, stitched into squares, like a down jacket (but thin, and without the fill).

The shell, on the other hand, looks very nice. I have not worn it in a downpour yet, but even in a drizzle, some of the raindrops bead, and others soak in. I'm skeptical of the Pertex material.

The hood fits great, and detaches without taking away from the aesthetics of the jacket.

Perhaps it's worth $100, but certainly not $280. If you're just looking for a rain jacket, go with something else (I've had good experiences with Marmot)

Outdoor Research is a company for years that let Columbia and TNF build all the 3 in 1 jackets but now that they've finally done it, you have to realize it's for the real outdoor enthusiast and mountaineering crowd and not the "I'm walking across my campus" crowd. The quality? Damn near unbeatable. Upstate New York? Bring it!
