Outdoor Research Trio Jacket - Men's

Why bother with a quiver of jackets when you can have the versatility of the Outdoor Research Men’s Trio Jacket? This three-in-one jacket features a Pertex waterproof breathable shell with a zip-out insulated liner for a jacket option in any conditions. When it’s cold as ice and spitting sleet, wear both pieces together. For chilly but dry conditions, the EnduraLoft-insulated liner has you covered, and for soggy or humid days where you just need weather protection, zip up the waterproof Pertex shell. A zip-out powder skirt works with either the shell or the liner for further versatility.

Bottom Line: Turn one jacket into three. Crazy, right?

Those are some pretty brutal conditions you're looking at DWJ. I'd look at something a little more hearty than the Trio jacket. Personally, I prefer to layer my jackets for my mountain excursions. Usually I'll put a light fleece under my OR Transcendent Sweater (down insulated) and then my OR Mentor Jacket (Gore-Tex) on top. I would suggest going that route as the insultion on most 3 in 1 jackets is "medium warmth" at best.

A nice Pertex Jacket

By:
May 16, 2009

A very light weight water repellent jacket. A good value. Tends to run small so move up a size if you can.
Could use more pockets. Only two useable pockets in the shell.
Pertex is a light weight water repellent material that stretches when you move.
Find a sale and pick one up. Don't pay more than $110.

Outdoor Research doesn't even offer a waterproof rating but I can speak from experience. This jacket has been in extreme wet/windy conditions. Mine kept me dry as a bone and breathes extremely well! You'll love it.Hope that helps.

had higher expectations for a $280 jacket

By:

The jacket is decent, but not amazing. The inside jacket is extremely flimsy (and not very attractive--I don't think I would ever wear it by itself). It is a shiny material, stitched into squares, like a down jacket (but thin, and without the fill).

The shell, on the other hand, looks very nice. I have not worn it in a downpour yet, but even in a drizzle, some of the raindrops bead, and others soak in. I'm skeptical of the Pertex material.

The hood fits great, and detaches without taking away from the aesthetics of the jacket.

Perhaps it's worth $100, but certainly not $280. If you're just looking for a rain jacket, go with something else (I've had good experiences with Marmot)

How would this jacket stand up in the winters in Upstate New York? Would it be warm enough? How is the quality versus North Face?

Outdoor Research is a company for years that let Columbia and TNF build all the 3 in 1 jackets but now that they've finally done it, you have to realize it's for the real outdoor enthusiast and mountaineering crowd and not the "I'm walking across my campus" crowd. The quality? Damn near unbeatable. Upstate New York? Bring it!
