recently purchased one of these jackets in a medium size. I'm 5'8, 40' chest, 32'waist and 176lbs, and i was surprised to see how large it was. i'm aware that it's meant to accomodate layering but the sleeves billowed and the body wasn't quite as fitted as i'd initially thought. i also have a rab latok alpine shell which seems to be more fitted. anyone else had sizing issues with the mentor?

I had the same issue with the OR mentor. I am 6'1" 200lbs, 43" chest, 17x35 shirt. The large fit very loosely throughout the body and the sleeves billowed just as you described. I am going to try a medium, hopefully that will solve the problem. Room for layering is great, but I think the cut of this jacket is a little excessive unless you plan on having a mid/heavy weight down midlayer on all the time when wearing it. Then again, OR designed it to be a 4 season bombproof shell with the extra room for layering and the longer arms for climbing...Maybe I am just too soft for this jacket, my main uses will be extended backpacking trips, shoulder season climbing, and winter skiing/snowshoeing in the PNW.

I have the Mentor as well in a medium and it does fit a little larger. I'm 2" taller than you, so it fits me well for winter activities. You're bang on when you say it's meant to allow layering. OR cuts their shells a little bigger for that very reason. If it doesn't fit, just exchange it for a small. Backcountry.com has a fantastic return/exchange policy.

Great Jacket!

I've had the Mentor in everything from summer rain in Texas to bitter cold in Alaska and it's worked out great. The full side zips are especially useful when it's warm out. The Gore-Tex Pro Shell breathes much better than I expected. In the past, after hiking the ridge wearing my Gore-Tex shell, I'd have a load of moisture clinging to the inside of my shell. Pro Shell vents moisture much better and doesn't leave me clammy inside my jacket.

I very much recommend this jacket.

I am 6'2'' and 200lbs. I'm athletically built- wide shoulders, broad chest, large ribcage. What size should I get? I'd like a snug, yet not restrictive fit. Comfortable, but not baggy. Thank you in advance.
