Outdoor Research Hypnotic Down Jacket - Men's - 2008
You’re getting sleepy… verrrry sleeeepy. That’s because the Outdoor Research Men’s Hypnotic Down Jacket’s 650-fill down insulation keeps you so warm and comfortable, you could kick back for a nice little nap right in the middle of a hearty arctic blizzard. (No worries—not the hypothermic kind of nap.) A lightweight, water-resistant ripstop polyester shell keeps you dry, and the brushed tricot-lined collar warms your neck and chin. Handwarmer pockets make a cozy docking spot for your hands, and the internal media pocket ensures that you can listen to some soothing music as you kick back on the tundra.
Bottom Line: This hypnosis could also help you in occupational therapy settings as well.
This jacket is great, light, and packs down mighty small. I'm 5'10" 160 lbs, medium shoulders and lean torso, and the medium is perfect. It gives me room for a layer underneath, but snug enough that air isn't rushing up the bottom. The athletic cut allows a full range of arm motion, unlike other down jackets/coats I've tried. My only complaints are the strange stitch pattern (curved rather than straigh across the front) and the lack of insulation between the pockets and the inside of the jacket. The pockets keep my hands plenty warm, but when they start out frozen that second side of feathers would help. Other than that, perfect!
Its my first OR jacket but it wont be the last. True to fit and description. It keeps me warm in mild weather. I have yet to test in in really cold weather but i hope that wont be to far off. I am in love. Thanks OR!
The Outdoor Research web site doesn't list pit zips as a feature so I'd bet this jacket doesn't have them, but I don't know for sure. Maybe someone who owns the jacket can answer. http://www.outdoorresearch.com/site/m_s_hypnotic_jacket.htmlEdit: I own the jacket and no, there are no pit zips.
Awesome down jacket - great warmth to fill ratio and very durable fabric. This jacket was bought to replace an older "bubble style" down parka that looked too much like I was heading out on an expedition when I was wearing it around town. Some notes: * no hood - Good by me as I am a hat wearer and appreciate less bulk around the collar. That said, while the collar is insulated, its not a "baffle design that completely closes off when zipped up. More like a zip up fleece than a windproof seal.
* narrow fit - I am 6', 185 and 42 chest. That said, sleeves are fine (I am 35" sleeve) but the overall fit of a LARGE is not oversized or loose. Not a ton of room for layers, but then. this jacket is warm enough that it shouldn't be needed and not intended for expedition use.
* the shoulders - that quirky fit part of the review - the sleeve is neither set in nor true raglan design...the quilting of the down which adds to the tapered look of the jacket is not included across the sleeve and shoulder...the result, while a perfect fit, is the shoulders poof a bit...the stitching across the tummy reminds people of abs, and the shoulders make me look ripped. Not at all affecting the fit, but something to be aware of if you imagine it will bother you.
GREAT jacket - highly recommended. In black it carries off a metropolitan look just fine, but its got the OR name behind it.
Certainly will. It'll only be good on its own down to about freezing temps though, cause it's not as thick as other jackets. If he wants a more contoured fit check out the MontBell down jackets. They have the anti-Michelin Man look:http://www.backcountry.com/store/group/204/Mens-Down-Jackets.html#app=price~+group~204+brand~100000290+sortby~+cat~11+subcat~20+offset~+on_sale~+page_name~Mens-Down-Jackets
Well, I wore this jacket on a camping trip into the cascades...and its the warmest, lightest jacket, I have ever owned. I've never been a fan of down - it gets wet, most jackets have cold spots, etc. This jacket sheds water and is incredibly warm if you are moving around(I wouldn't wear it in rain, but it shed the snow fine, when it got too wet I used a poncho.)
Thank you backcountry/SC, and definitely thank you outdoor research. For the price I paid, this jacket is more than a deal...its a steal.
The OR Hypnotic jacket is so light and so warm. I've worn it with a long-sleeved t-shirt and a scarf in 15-20 degree temps and been perfectly warm, and layered it with fleece for single-digit temps and same story, nice and warm. The only thing I've noticed that's a little weird is that the down doesn't stay put in the cuffs, but that's what gloves are for, eh?
Not overly puffy, feels extremely light on the fill weight, I haven't worn it up to the mountains yet but not sure I would trust staying warm at camp in anything under 25F in this thing with a shell over it. The arms especially feel like they skimped on the fill.
Will update after I test it, but I get the feeling this thing is intended for showing off the OR logo in a crowded shopping mall. It is a nice looking piece however.
