Outdoor Research Fanatic Jacket - Women's - 2009

Outdoor Research gave the Women’s Fanatic Jacket a minimum of features to keep weight low while still providing total wet-weather protection. The fully taped seams and waterproof breathable Pertex nylon help you stay dry even in a total downpour. Since this Outdoor Research jacket weighs only nine ounces and packs to about the size of a fist, it easily makes the cut even as a just-in-case shell.

Bottom Line: You never have to leave this one behind.

Going to Peru... would this jacket hold up both in an Amazon style downpour and as a hard shell over a parka in the Andes? If not, any suggestions for something that could cover both?

Thanks!

Sure this would work great for those climates. Any of the lightweight waterproof breathable jackets will do fine. Just size it so that it will fit over whatever is the most insulation you plan on having on. (short of very high elevation in the andes 1 or 2 fleeces at most)

Just don't bring more of a water resistant wind breaker or an old lined ski-jacket and be surprised when you get hypothermic like a couple of friends of mine experienced.

I wish i had this jacket for my marathon up Mt. Mitchell. BUT, i have had subsequent times to try this jacket in the rain (been raining a ton in the Southeast).

At first I was concerned b/c the material is really thin, but I put it on, and I did not get wet after hours running in the rain. I also noticed that I did not overheat like I would have in other jackets. Hood is great too. Pull the cord and blocks out rain coming from an angle. Good bill. Light, light weight. - met all of my expectations

Also - stuff sack in pocket, which I love, so I can bring it anywhere.

Looking forward to running another trail 1/2 marathon in the rain on Sunday.

I'm camping in Oregon this summer and I'm preparing for lots of rain and chilly weather. this looks like it will hold up, but will I have to wear layers under it? If not this jacket, do you have any suggestions for a good jacket?

This jacket makes a great shell but might not be enough in chilly rainstorms. A good layer to pack around for chilly situations can be found here:

Matching a midweight layer with a jacket like this should be perfect for some mild summer nights in Oregon.

The fabric is lightweight and soft without being clingy. I have not worn it in places as humid as Cambodia, but it has been great on hot summer paddle trips.
