The Outdoor Research Expedition Crocodiles Gaiters are large enough to wrap around plastic mountaineering boots and thick, insulated pants, and the Gore-Tex and Cordura fabrics provide waterproof protection. Outdoor Research made these mountaineering gaiters with three-layer Gore-Tex on the upper leg sections and durable Cordura on the inner leg and boot section, so your pants, socks, and legs stay dry on ice climbing ascents. Plus, your crampons won't snag on the insides of these gaiters. Attach the hook on the Expedition Crocodiles to your boot laces, tighten the top cinch-strap, and fasten the urethane-coated nylon instep strap. A hook-and-loop tab at the bottom keeps the front of these gaiters closed.
Bottom Line: Keeping insulated pants and plastic boots dry isn't a problem when you have Outdoor Research's large-circumference Expedition Crocodiles.
If in doubt...go for the expedition gators over the regular crocodiles. They are super strong, warm, and durable. I use them for skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. They are larger so if you are worried about a tight seal around the top of your gator you may want to size down.
A lot of you have been suggesting sizing down... I wear size 8.5 boots. Do you think I should stick with the mediums or go for the small? Oh and they won't be plastic boots. They are the Scarpa Summit GTX boots.
I have a pair of Mediums and am trying to get them to fit on a size 9 lowa mountain expert and they are only snug when I have the buckle tightened so much that its near the edge of the sole and the hook is going over the very first (near the toe) cross of laces. I think I will be returning them for a size small.
I second that. I wear size 10.5 and returned my gaiters twice--sizing down each time until I ended up with the smalls. I had a hard time getting a tight seal around my leg (5'11, 180 lbs) at the top as well as around my boots. The expeditions are wider than the regular crocs for mountaineering boots.
Well if you can get away with grabbing the smalls, I would recommend it, simply for a tighter seal around your foot and leg. Definitely suggest trying some pairs on before hand though.
I bought this gaiter for ice climbing. It is the only gaiter to consider. With the heavy duty material all the way up the inside leg and the wide front velcro closure, this gaiter can handle anything you throw at it including getting tagged by your crampons!
These gators are Bomb Proof! No worries of tearing from crampons. No worries of letting the bold in or the water for that matter. These are exactly what the doctor ordered..... I have an extreme doctor!
I want to use these for snowshoeing with a size 12.5 boot. I do not have real stocky calves so if I go with a large (because I don't need all the extra width) will it still fit my boot?
I have found that it really depends on what boot your going to wear. If you wearing plastic boots like mountaineering or ski boots then you will need the XL but if your wearing some hiking boots then the L may fit. I wear a 11 size boot and I have the XL for both my plastic mountaineering boots and for my hiking boots.
The large fits great over my 12.5 Kayland MXT, despite my concerns that the wider expedition would be too small if I sized down. I'm 6' 4" and mainly wanted the gaiter for snowshoeing and mountaineering. With a thick base and nylon hiking pant, the gaiters fit over the boot snugly and just a hair loose on the calves. Ideally, these are made for use with wider plastic mountaineering boots and thicker insulation. But I wanted a bramble and crampon worthy piece of gear. Plus they provide a little extra insulation. A necessary addition to any winter gear stock pile, there's a reason OR hasn't changed much on the these in years.
They're warm, waterproof, very durable, versatile and perfect for any adventure. I use them for everything from ice climbing to muddy hikes. My crampons have yet to tear them to pieces through two seasons.
i had a different pair of gators and they always fell down and so didn't really work. do these stay up well? cause it kind of defeats the purpose if they always fall down to your ankles!!
These stay up extremely well, even without having to over tighten them which is nice. They're great gaiters!Hope that helps.AS Kisow's review says below, they are a larger circumference. I wear a 12.5 boot and sized down for a large and the fit is good if I layer.
These really are the last set of gators you will ever buy. Super durable, they stay up well, and fit large boots. In summer you can roll the top down to get a little more ventilation. Gore-tex breathes well. I will never trade mine in for anything less.
Very waterproof and durable. I've postholed and snowshoed for days in wet spring snow pack that was 6 feet deep. Combine these with gore-tex boots and you will have dry feet.
expedition Material: [Upper leg] 3-Layer 70D Taslan Gore-Tex; [Inner leg and boot section] 1000D Cordura/ Regular Material: Taslan Gore-Tex®, 1000d Cordura, and 8oz packcloth this is biggest difference I can find
These were the only gaiters I could find that would fit over my mountaineering boots. Selling them by shoe size is a great idea. They worked great for my mountaineering class in Utah!
Great Gaitors but decided the regular crocs would have been best choice. The expedition gaitors are quite a bit larger in circumference to accomadate thick leg insulation. If you are worried about fitting crocs over double plastic boots - both expedition and regular crocs fit over them.
