The ultra-breathable, highly water-resistant Outdoor Research Men's Credo Jacket makes a great shell for aerobic winter activities like backcountry skiing and climbing. The Credo Jacket uses DWR-coated softshell nylon to provide excellent weather protection without feeling clammy. It has exterior-taped seams to prevent moisture from getting through the stitching. Outdoor Research gave this softshell a brushed fleece interior for a soft feel and extra insulation for pre-dawn alpine starts.
Bottom Line: Wear the Outdoor Research Credo Jacket into the mountains for versatile weather protection without the clammy feel of hardshell jackets.
Pros: -Very comfortable. The jackets conforms to the body well. -High build quality. OR is known for quality products and this jacket lives up to that standard. -Very Breathable/Insulates well. This jacket has made it through nearly all elements (i.e. rain, snow, hail, wind, sun) without being too cold or too hot. -Well designed pockets. There are hand pockets, inside and out breast pockets. All of them are waterproof and very usable. I don't use the inside breast pocket much, but I'm sure some will find a use for it. -Hook-and-loop zipper flap. Most flaps are button/hook-and-loop, which is annoying to me. This one is purely hook-and-loop and I love it. -Very cheap. Not many soft-shells are at this price and I wouldn't consider them if they are.
Cons: -Difficult to zip at times. (I might be retarded, but the double zipper doesn't zip up easily sometimes). -No hood. This is not a problem if you'll be using this solely as an insulating layer.
I always have a hard time finding clothes that fit me well because I have a wide chest and broad shoulders. So most jackets are either tight up top and too short (sleeves and torso) or loose up top and too long. I usually end up getting a tight jacket and leaving the pit-zips open, which sucks when it gets cold and looks weird.
However, this jacket fits me perfectly because it conforms to my body shape with ease. It still is a little tight up top, but it is nowhere as restricting as most jackets.
I live in Seattle and have experienced 30-degree weather as well as snow. It was a bit cold with a t-shirt underneath, but is very warm if coupled with a medium-weight base layer. Using this jacket with a light-weight base layer with an outer-shell is a great combo for cold days on the mountain.
Sometimes you just want good stuff. Then you find this jacket. And you're like "That is good stuff." Then you get it because you want its goodness to wear on your outside. And it is indeed good stuff. The end.
Just today, had my Credo jacket out in 4 degree temps in the backcountry of Colorado. With a light base layer and mid-weight fleece, this jacket kept me warm and protected from powder snow, cold and wind. High attention to detail, slim fit, and bomber construction. OR makes sweet soft-shells. Highly recommended for high energy activities.
I love this jacket. It's comfortable and fits very well. I have a medium and I'm 6'2", 150lbs. It's long enough but not too loose. Looks great in nearly every setting.
I use it for most of my skiing and all of my ski touring and climbing. It's nice and warm and holds its own against water. The taped seams help quite a bit. The water resistant zippers for the pockets are a nice touch. The inner fleece is very soft and feels great. As a softshell it's a little bit light to use in extreme cold, but wear several layers underneath and it does plenty well. I have yet to try it as a midlayer under a heavier shell, but it would work great fit-wise. We'll see if the coming winter pushes me to that.
As a very minor quibble, after two seasons of keeping the cuffs loose the stiff side of the velcro is wearing the softshell material a bit at the inner edge of the flap for the cuff cincher. It's very minor and some fabric tape will take care of it, but it would have been nice if OR already did that.
This jacket is great for hiking. I was hiking in 70mph wind gusts with a wind chill of 20 degrees and i just had a tee-shirt and this jacket and it was perfect. I also wear it under a hardshell when i am skiing. The only downside is i wish it had a hood but then it wouldn't look nearly as cool. Also great for just wearing around town and casual.
I chose this jacket because I wanted a softshell that I could layer under my ski shell, and wear causaly around town. This jacket has been a home run. it fits a a bit longer then the northface and HH shoftshells I have also owned. I also like the double zipper that can be opened from the bottom up. it does have a slightly boxier fit than an arcteryx as a reviewer below noted, but I was okay with that. This jacket is also a pretty good value compared to alot of other soft shells.
The jacket was well-made, a great value, the small was a good fit (for 5'9" 150 lb male), though not for wearing a bulky fleece underneath, it was also kind of boxy in shape so we returned it and got the arcteryx sigma in small instead which had a more tailored cut.
