Use the lightweight, waterproof Outdoor Research Aurora Bivy when you travel solo in the backcountry. The Aurora Bivy features Gore-Tex Respiration+ fabric, a waterproof, windproof, vapor-permeable material that Gore-Tex made for sleep systems. The snow or rain can't get into your bivy, but the moisture from your breath and your perspiration can escape. Outdoor Research gave this bivy mesh netting, so bugs don't bite you after you've gone to bed. Loops on the Aurora let you stake it down or use guy lines to hold it down in high winds. An internal mesh pocket near your head lets you stash small items such as your headlamp or pocket knife. This bivy sack, which has no poles, weighs about 1.5 pounds—ideal for traveling light.
Bottom Line: Travel light and stay dry in the backcountry with your Outdoor Research Aurora Bivy.
The Aurora bivy has treated me well, keeps me super dry and adds a bit of warmth when sleeping in the snow. I have never had issues with condensation, though i have never slept in it with the storm flap fully closed... I used this bivy last winter during a massive snowstorm in montana, for 3 nights, and my sleeping bag stayed dry and warm the whole trip. Gotta love that bug net for summer skeeter's too!
i perspire relatively lightly. after a night of light snow, and the storm flap only covering my head (not zipped), i had very little condensation inside the sac come morning. my buddy sleeping in an older sac and of less quality, arose with significant moisture on his sleeping bag, (he sweats a lot) it has easy access and zips well. i appreciate the no see-um bug mesh. it would be nice to have a window in the storm flap to see the stars, snow or whatever. overall, i'm quite pleased with this product, enough that the use of my tent is now limited
im 6' and about 150. i hadn't any trouble really. considering it's size and function atleast. the zipper goes down a fair ways on each side, enabling fair movement. simply put, I have no complaints. But maybe it should have a cinch strap around the head, to snug up over your bag, if you choose not to close yourself in.. but that's on a side note. You can actually slide in from the top in bad weather. Real cozy!
If your venturing into bivy terrain don't leave home without this. I've used mine a lot and have had great luck. It is a little heavier than some of the ultra lights on the market, but worth the extra weight. I've used some lighter ones and they can be one use wonders - light, but not at all duragble and they don't breath. This bivy sac breathes really well and will stand up to multiple season of use. Well worth the extra cost. Overall a great product.
I am wildland firefighter and spend MANY nights sleeping on the ground(pretty much all summer). The first time I used this was on a fire in Santa Cruz, cold night and woke up soaked! I thought I just had too many layers. Next night slept with nothing on and still woke up soaked! Such a bumber to pack a wet sleeping bag into a stuff sack for the day. Im sorry to be a downer, but I DO NOT recommend this bivy!
