Osprey Packs Talon 22 Backpack - 1200-1300cu in

Mountain bike the epic South Boundary Trail in New Mexico or hike slot canyons in Utah's San Rafael Swell with the Osprey Talon 22 Backpack. This lightweight backpack holds everything you need for an ambitious day outside. Stuff extra clothes and a jacket in the top-accessed main compartment and your bike helmet in the stretchy front pocket. Your water bladder (not included) goes in the hydration compartment, and energy gel stashes nicely in your harness pockets. Osprey gave the Talon 22 Backpack a mesh harness and hip-belt as well as a padded back panel with air channels to keep air flowing underneath this pack so you stay cool.

Bottom Line: Comfortably carry all the gear you need for a killer day outdoors in the Osprey Talon 22 Backpack.

Osprey never lets down

By:
June 30, 2009

This is the ultimate in day packs, that I've tried at least. It holds all you need for a day out or even a UL overnighter. I use this for hikes, school, camera bag (I prefer to carry lenses, etc. in their own protective case in this comfy bag vs. an uncomfy heavy camera bag), and hopefully adventure races soon.
Osprey knows what they are doing when it comes to comfort, toughness, usability, weight, etc. without anything useless.

Works like it should.

I bought this pack for adventure racing. The weekend after I bought it I did a single day "medical" adventure race where you had to carry a lot of extra gear. The pack accommodated my stuff as far as space is concerned, and the design of the pack allows for easy carrying. The compression and load adjustment straps keep the load secure and close to your body eliminating bounce. The hydration bladder actually hangs from a hanger in the hydration sleeve, which prevents the bladder from bunching up at the bottom of the pack when it starts to empty. The back ventilation is comfortable, as are the waist belt and adjustable sternum strap. I have also started using this pack for mountain biking just because it's more comfortable than my smaller hydration pack I've been using for biking. I've also been wearing this pack and flipped a canoe, and my gear inside the main area stayed largely dry. All-in-all, thoughtfully designed bag that is perfect for day hikes (maybe even an overnighter, although I haven't tried that), long trail runs, mountain biking, and adventure racing.

I want to start backpacking, but i can't deside wether to get this pack or the Marmot Eiger 35 Backpack. I plan to go for 1-3 days at a time. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, this is really just a day pack that wouldn't be anywhere near large enough for backpacking. The Eiger 35 is almost twice as large, but still may be a little on the small side (if you are going to be carrying a tent, sleeping bag, etc.) Backcountry.com has a guide to backpacks that could be helpful to you (at http://www.backcountry.com/store/dc/470/Backcountry-Backpack-Guide.html ). Or, you could contact backcountry and they may be able to give you recommendations. If you will be spending 2-3 days in the backcountry, you may wish to look here: http://www.backcountry.com/store/group/42/Weekend-Packs-3000-4500-cu-in.html . OTOH, if you are just looking for a pack to carry stuff for a day hike, this is a great pack.

They made the perfect day pack

By:
October 17, 2007

so I just got the new Talon 22 pack and I'm blown away on how perfect this pack is. I have been looking for a good day pack for some time now and I found it! Every time I go somewhere I always seem to over pack, but this bag gives me enough room to get everything I need into it no matter what season, My 2 1/2 L Hydration pack with insulation on it fits perfect, and the pack even has a strap to hold it in place preventing the bottle from slipping down as you drink. First looking at this pack it doesn't seem to have many pockets, but after you pack it for the first time you realize there are over 11 pockets to stash your gear. The pack fits very close to the hips. The pack also fits narrow on your back keeping the center of gravity closer to you and preventing the pack from shifting and throwing of your balance. A narrow pack also allows you better flexibility while walking or climbing tough terrain. I would highly recommend this pack to a friend for a day out on the trail. It will also make a good overnight bag fitting maybe 3 pairs of jeans 3 shirts and a extra pair of shoes with no problem. I have been looking for the perfect day pack for sometime now and I finaly found it in the Osprey Talon 22 5 stars from me

best daypack

By:
June 4, 2009

This is the perfect daypack. Good size and super light. Tons of organizing pockets, including hidden ones that are great for travel when you need to stash money, etc. very comfortable on the back and holds up to abuse. I took mine all over peru and it's still as good as new. Got 3 more for friends who loved it so much they had to have one too.

It doesn't. I guess you could put it in the hydration pocket (between the suspension and pack body). Either way, there is plenty of room for a laptop, you'll just need to have it in it's own padded sleeve.
Personally I use this bag for school and I do carry a laptop in a padded sleeve in the main pocket. So, get it and you won't regret it.

Osprey Talon 22 review

By:
September 20, 2007

This backpack packs more stuff than I had expected. I've used it once now, and I like it. The hipbelt pockets I love for easy access to treats. The hydration slot works well. Adjustable sternum strap is wonderful. It would be nice to have some more organization/slots within the mesh top pocket, but it is good to have a smaller pocket. Has a loop to hook in walking poles or whatever in the one side pocket. I'm 5'1" and the pack fits ok. It's not noticably too big. Having everything adjustable helps.

socal Rob up north

My osprey Talon 22 is great. No two ways about it. I use this pack to take my personal supplies to and from work. I was worried because I knew I needed pockets. Well, with a good sized pocket at the top of the bag, 2 side stretch pockets, one large stuff pocket, a main compartment, a small Velcro pocket in the main compartment and also one in hydration compartment and two shoulder strap pockets and two belt pockets ,I found i had nothing to worry about. The main compartment is plenty large. I can fit my lunch in the bottom of the pack, a nalgene on top of that, a stuff sack with my hat and gloves, my rain shell or extra shirt with a bit of room to spare. The stuff pocket on the main compartment has also held my nalgene and rain shell with ease. It now is holding the novel i am reading and does so without fear of it falling out. I have my professional CPR mask in one side stretch pocket and a box of Quench gum in the other. The side pockets are really a joy to have on this pack because they are extremely versatile with enough room and stretch for a Nalgene. The top zippered storage pocket held ALL my 'medical' supplies. Ibuprofen, liquid bandage, antacids, Swiss Army Knife, twenty plus items, everything i might need. The Small Velcro pocket inside the hydration sleeve is perfect for my Pocket Bible. The belt pouches hold a battery powered cell phone charger and 4 batteries and my Surefire Z2 combat light respectively. The straps are comfy and despite their diminutive appearance support my full gear weight without problems. The pockets on the shoulder straps are great. You need to work to get anything in them but that just means it will take an act of congress to make something fall out. Ipods, cell phones and Swiss Army Knives are safe, even on the move. I haven't yet used this bag out doors but i cannot wait. I have an acid green model, which isn't as bright as in the pictures but it isn't a problem. The color is Pleasing to say the least. compression straps, hip belt, sternum straps with safety whistle. Torso adjustment. Amazing pack!

I'm looking to buy a day pack but I'm not sure which

I'm looking to buy a day pack but I'm not sure which one would be better for hikes, the Talon 22 or the Talon 11? I usually bring water, a lunch, camera, extra jacket, mp3, suntan lotion, sunglasses, hat and sometimes trekking poles. Would the Talon 11 fit all this with the poles strapped outside? I'm 5'3". Thanks.

I don't have the 11, but if you are talking about an SLR and plan to take a lens or two a long in their own padded cases, then the 22 is the better choice, in case it rains you can stick the body in there too. Hope that helps.

One of the lightest and most durable day packs. Pockets are perfect for carrying small items for a day hike. Quick to get into when carrying snacks and gear for the jaunt to the zoo with the kids. No pressure points on shoulders or hips to worry about.

The One

By:
January 7, 2009

After spending 20 years in the Army, most of it in the woods with a pack on my back. I still enjoy hiking. According to my wife I've, owned more than my share of gear. I researched for two years on the best day pack around. The one I choose is the Osprey Talon 22. It is the perfect combination of size and function with many extras. You can not go wrong buying this pack. Well worth the price.

Good ultra run bag

By:
January 7, 2009

I have used this pack in moderate conditions for several ultra runs carrying clothing and hydration bladder. Worked brilliantly under these conditions Have used it once for an overnighter with Nemo one man tent Big Agnes Horse thief (35F) sleeping bag + airbed, Minimal Tranger cooker plus food clothing for 0 to 5C. This minimal gear stretched it to limit. Probably would not try again when I needed the tent as it took about half an hour to pack. I had to use every nook and cranny and I could not fit my book in! Once it was on my back it worked well. Can recommend it as a running pack.

At 19 inches you really could go either way and be fine. Personally, I'd suggest going smaller with the S/M.

so good I bought two...

By:
December 3, 2008

Great daypack, the best one I've ever owned. Used it for a month out in Wyoming and Idaho on a geology field camp, and it was the perfect size for carrying a day's worth of gear out in the field. Super-light and uber-comfortable, I especially liked that I could adjust the entire strap assembly up and down, as I am 6'5" and thus have problems finding a pack to fit my torso. In fact, I loved it so much I bought a second one on sale after my first got stolen from my car (including climbing shoes, camera, etc...) Great pack, no bad qualities about it.

Very nice daypack

By:
March 30, 2009

I use this pack for all purposes, as a daypack to head up to the summit and to tote my unnecessarily large corporate finance books. Fits a Camelbak nicely and still leaves room for other necessary gear. This material and stitching is very strong and the design spreads the load evenly and comfortably when on my bike, on foot and scrambling along ridge tops.

This backpack rocks!

By:
January 2, 2009

I love this backpack! I had another daypack/backpack, which I really liked, but it was more book bag-ish, so I wanted a cool backpack that looked and felt like a REAL backpack. This Osprey is perfect. It holds a lot, the pockets are great, the material is great, and it is very adjustable. The main compartment holds more than I thought it would. It has a lot of compression straps just in case you don't have it packed to capacity. The top zip pocket is advertised as a sunglass pocket, but it is much larger....I can fit my wallet, change purse, passport, small notebook, pen, tissues, and yes, sunglasses, in that pocket. The hip belt zippered pockets are just big enough to hold a snack or gum or maybe a little digital camera. The harness pockets (the ones that will be on your chest) are perfect for an MP3 player. I am a Navy wife currently living in Japan, but we are moving to Hawaii this month. I've already used my backpack for a weekend in Tokyo, but I know it will really rock in Hawaii for hiking, boating, and just throwing it in the back of my Jeep for a drive to the beach or anywhere. This backpack will be with me for a very long time....maybe forever. By the way, the chili red color is actually a very awesome darker orange. I love it. I was concerned about the color when I ordered (it looked kind of orange in the picture, which is what I wanted; but it said it was chili red, which I didn't want). So if you have those same concerns, don't worry! The color is great. You will love this backpack!

Yes, they are rather large and good for almost any size bottle. There is no specific strap for holding a bottle, but the side compression straps do go over the pockets so you could use them to secure it. I have used a 22 oz bottle and the stretch pocket holds it nice and snug without worry.

October 21, 2008

super light pack that has plenty of room for solid day hikes. my wife, daughter and i do a fair bit of hiking in the cooler months and this pack has enough space to hold water, lunch and excess clothing for all of us. that said, the pack can be compressed enough that it stays tight even with far less gear. i have no complaints re: this pack.

Good Trip Pack

By:
March 13, 2009

This pack is great for day or overnight trips, as it sits very comfortably on my back and is very light. I wouldn't recommend it as an around-town pack, however, because there's basically one main compartment and it's very difficult to organize the contents.

Multi Purpose Pack

By:
March 13, 2009

Great for Running (snug fit with little to no movement)
Great for Travel (carry on)
Great for Day Hikes I hike with my girlfriend and end up having to carry her gear from time to time There is plenty of room for 2 rain jackets, food, hats, gloves, camera,
I use this pack in the summer time as an overnight pack. Hammock, rope, rain jacket, stove, food, tarp, water filter shorts, a t-shirt and a towel all fit in the pack. It is tight, but you can pull it off if you have the right gear.
Fits close to the body so if you are in tight quarters you are not snagging it on anything
Having a place for your water bladder is a great feature for a daypack

If you have an active lifestyle you need this pack.
