Osprey Packs Switch 55+5 - 3700 cu in - 2006

The Osprey Switch 55+5 is the ultimate hut trip, haute route, overnight touring pack. When you combine all three parts of the Switch 55+5, there's enough space for your sleeping bag, clothes and food. The 300-cubic-inch AquaSource will carry water and skins inside, and a shovel on the outside via a bungee strap. The detachable 700cu inch Osprey Switch 12 yo-yo pack, when combined with the Aquasource, makes a great short daytrip pack for a combined total of 1000 cubic inches, and a built-in snow safety gear organizer. For that longer tour from the hut, use the 55 for a full 3000cu inches of carrying capacity. A large front mesh pocket keeps your shovel, probe and skins within easy reach. When it's time to pack out, put all 3 pieces back together for 3700cu inches of space.

Bottom Line: Touring packs just got a whole lot more sophisticated with the Osprey Switch 55+5.

Switch 55+5 is a Great Backpack

Great backpack. My wife's first backpack and it performed awesome. Light, sturdy, packed with conviences, goodies, very well thought out. Worth the $250+ dollars. A lot of money but well spent. Took it to Europe on honeymoon. Awesome.

Judging the book by its cover?

When this pack is fully stuffed as it appears on the website or in a store it appears to hang way too far off the back to be comfortable. In truth, when it is loaded as intended, with most of the weight close to the back in the main compartment and with only snow safety gear in the "marsupial" daypack, it rides spectacularly.
The ability to organize this pack for extended hut tours or just a day of yo-yo-ing in the powder makes it wonderfully versatile.
On a 2 night, 3 day hut tour in the spring of '04 it did all of the above with aplomb. As vice president of the Backcountry Snowsports Alliance in Colorado, an advocacy organization for non-motorized backcountry travelers, I have the opportunity to spend a fair bit of time skiing the backcountry. I’ve not found a pack that does more or is as easy to organize for longer backcountry excursions than the Switch 55 + 5. Upon inspection of my pack at one of the huts last year, one of my fellow BSA board members ordered one for herself upon her return to “civilization.”
Don’t let its looks deceive you. There is a reason that this pack has won numerous awards from backcountry ski magazines and web reviewers.
