Osprey Packs Departure 60 - Mens - 2004

You'll relish laughing in the ticket checker's face when you unzip the two components of the ingeniously designed Departure to meet carry-on requirements. The Departure's unique bi-component design includes a daypack and travel (or cargo) pack. But instead of the daypack attaching to the front of the travel pack like most comparable products, it zips to the backside to become the primary suspension affording a number of advantages. Larger than most detachable daypacks, it can carry your laptop and other heavy gear comfortably all day. A removable contoured shoulder strap allows you to carry the Cargo pack separately. A full length Delrin rod adds excellent load support.

Bottom Line: Quickly zip the Departure apart for the versatility of two packs in one.

I used this for a 15-day trip to Israel, Greece and Italy. Perhaps too spacious, as it allowed me to over-pack a bit! I was able to carry about 25% of my body weight, but not always easily (leaning forward while walking, difficult balance-wise on descending stairs). Security and accessibility were great. The zip-apart feature worked well for carrying onto airplanes. It's not possible to turn around in narrow spaces or sit in regular chairs while wearing the whole system.

Awesome design idea

This pack has one of the most innovative designs I've seen yet. Unfortunately, the pack has one flaw. The pack protrudes very far from the body, placing the center of gravity too far away from the body. This causes the person to lean forward to stable the weight. Other than this, the pack design is very advanced making the pack a lot of fun to use. I prefer non-framed packs which conform better to the body and recommend the Osprey Porter & Osprey Solo/Daylite combo.

The last bag I will ever need

This bag is perfect for me. I am studying engineering and also spend a lot of time at the student rec center. Needless to say I always have around a 60lb bag and tons of bulky gear. This bag is QUALITY and comfortable. I love that I can ditch my workout stuff in the cargo in my locker and still have this sweet pack. I am an organizational addict and this bag will satisfy even the most neurotic. I LOVE this pack and would reccomend it to any serial student, traveler, or professional. Osprey will always be the first place I look for any future technical needs.

Suprisingly disappionted

The travel pack was a complete let down. The shoulder straps are not good enough for long carries and the design pulls the pack back from the shoulders. Once packed its difficult to turn around in tight spots, the pack stands out from the back about 20in plus.

This Departure has Arrived

Just spent a month traveling around Europe with this thing. It was super durable and stood up to all of the abuse of sleeping in hostels and riding trains all the time. Being able to detach the daypack came in really handy when I was carrying stuff around with me all day. This thing is super comfortable and the fit was perfect for me. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a durable and comfortable pack.
