The brand new, one-of-a-kind Ortovox X1 is a hybrid avalanche beacon that combines the most positive aspects of digital and analog signal reception for fast and efficient searching. Namely, when you initiate your search, the beacon is in analog mode which has a superior range to digital, in this case 60m. Once you're within 10m of a signal, the beacon automatically switches to digital mode, locks on the signal, and has three bright direction arrows that tell you which way to move. This means you'll have a more direct search path and shorter search time. The strap is super comfortable and designed not to be lost. Other beacons cost a bit more because they are specialized for either digital or analog operation and perform better than the X1 in these respective modes, but the X1 is an excellent beacon for its price and a 5 year warranty.
Bottom Line: This is a new breed of transceriver that mixes analog AND digital technology for fast, user-friendly searching.
Seems to work very well in practice situations. Longer range of analog is a reassuring feature. While simple to use, the analog mode does require some practice. When it switches to digital mode, the X1 is just as easy to use as the DTS unit. I bought this for my wife to use, and she seems to have taken to it quickly.
Our mountaineering club is considering F1-focus as the standard equipment. The member who owns X1 has rescued early more certainly than those who use F1-focus in the Avalanche rescue training.
I am esteeming the reliability of Ortovox Beacon. Although Ortovox F1 Beacon was used, as for me, it turns out immediately that Ortovox X1 Avalanche Beacon is excellent. The reason is that a beginner can also do within 5 minutes as for rescue.
Although SOS-N1-ND was used before, X1 tended to look for a target. I think that it is good for using for the first time. I don't want to meet avalanche!!!
I've read other reviews on different websites stating that this beacon is hard to use (basically pinpointing the location) and will not work with multiple victims. Has anyone else heard the same thing? I see everyone else says it's excellent. I'm just confused as to who I should listen to.... Thanks!
For multiple searches it takes much longer to find the victims unless you are very well trained! The mammut is better for multiple searches! For single searches the x1 is user friendly!
This beacon is easy to use and the dual mode is exactly what would be needed for a long range search. The analog signal gets you close and the digital signal with direction and distance locks you in quick ounce you get with in 10 meters. More importantly, my touring partners feel safe when we do beacon drills.
