Ortovox Patroller Avalanche Beacon

The professional-level Ortovox Patroller Avalanche Beacon combines the best of digital and analog technologies to help you save lives in the backcountry. The Patroller has a microprocessor that converts analog signals to give you a distance reading and a directional arrow to locate the victim more quickly. When approaching your target within 130ft, this Ortovox Beacon switches from the analog sonar sound to digital beeps so you know when you're getting closer to your target. Dead spots—locations where signals become unreadable—are nearly eliminated with the Patroller Beacon. A third antenna makes final pinpointing quick and precise.

Bottom Line: Quickly find victims and save lives with the professional Ortovox Patroller Avalanche Beacon.

Easy to use but not responding fast

The Ortovox Partoller Beacon is really easy to handle and very simple. Compared to the Mammut Pulse Beacon however, it is a lot slower in responding to changes of direction.

Somewhat of a "niche" beacon

By:

If you want a simple user interface, value a long range, and are comfortable with analog-only and then distance-only searching skills for a significant portion of the secondary search phase, yet still want a directional beacon (for a portion of the secondary search phase), then this is a beacon for you — and indeed, probably the only beacon that meets your criteria.

Severely lacking

By:
January 26, 2009

Although it claims to be a three antenna digital beacon, it seems Ortovox has stripped the best parts of the technology out. First, it switches to fully digital much too late, when you're already within 15m. It would speed up the search greatly if the directional arrows activated as soon as possible to vector directly to the buried beacon. Second, the third antenna is supposed to allow the beacon to resolve spikes, which can make it appear buried beacon is up to two meters away. However, the Patroller was completely unable to resolve spikes. For the money, I think the proven Tracker DTS is a much better choice.

The all in one!

By:

Simple and fast to use! Just like my old f1 focus I hear the beacon signal (single or multiple) as far away as 70m and once I get within 40m the digital numbers begin to count distance down and at 30m it begins vectoring and at 15m it switches to full digital mode! Super fast fine search! you walk directly to the buried beacon. The third antenna kicks on as soon as it receives its first signal pulse, usually around 5m. The best of both worlds built into one beacon! Definitely the best tool for being the fastest at finding my buddies if I ever have to search for them because we were dumb enough in the first place to get into an avalanche!
