Ortovox Check and Ride

The Ortovox Check and Ride provides you with a portable, adjustable, easy to use, quick reference reminder of the day’s avalanche hazard. Check the report before heading out and simply twist the dials on the Check and Ride to record important data such as overall risk level, wind speed and direction, risky aspects and elevations, and so on. Then just attach the nifty little device to your jacket or pack and consult it for a summarizing re-cap of potential hazards, to ensure you make the best decisions possible in the backcountry.

Bottom Line: Setting, carrying, and consulting the Ortovox Check and Ride is easy and could save your life.

Bukly junk

Like the other reviewer, I find this pretty useless, and it's a bit bigger than I was expecting, over 5" long. The compass and altimeter are worthless, and the amount of information that can be stored - hazard level, tendency, critical elevation and aspect is fairly limited.

An odd product to say the least.

Not too useful

I got this mostly because I needed a small compass that I could strap to my jacket for quickly checking aspects. However, the compass is sticky and jittery- I could have got the same thing by buying some trinket at wal-mart. The dials aren't capable of storing too much information about the conditions- you're better off printing or drawing an avalanche forecast "rose" and keeping in a windowed lift ticket pocket.
The clinometer is somewhat useful, however.
