Ortovox 240cm Economic Probe

The Ortovox 240cm Economic Probe offers full functionality at an affordable price. The aluminum probe segments indicate depth, while the conic tubes and express screw fastener allow for quick assembly when time is of the essence. The oversized head bores a hole wider than the main probe body, preventing it from freezing in place and getting stuck, and he durable Kevlar cord won’t break under stress.

Bottom Line: Backcountry safety that won’t break the bank.

Perfect for the Recreationist

By:
February 2, 2010

If your plan is to purchase a probe, put it in your Osprey winter pack, and then forget about it (except for the occasional assembly for practice), then the Ortovox 240cm probe is perfect. Since the average burial in an avalanche is about 100cm, this probe will work well in nearly every avi situation. Make sure you also purchase a beacon and shovel...and if you like cutting fresh lines in deep backcountry powder, then you and your ski buddies should take an AIARE certified avi level 1 course--it'll make you never want to venture into the backcountry or totally psyched to do it!

Not perfect but adequate

If your looking for the lighter weight BC kit this probe will help... Not a lot but a little... Probe snaps right together with a pull of the cord... Advantages slightly smaller and lighter than other probes. Disadvantages kinda of on the short side... Should be adequate for intermountain and continental snow packs, maybe want to consider a longer probe if you tour in costal snowpacks.

The average depth of a body under the snow pack in an avalanche is 3 to 3.5 feet or approximately 100 centimeters meters. The Ortovox 240cm should function just fine. The real usefulness of a probe will be dependent on whether the person buried under the snow has a beacon, and that you have a beacon in search mode--nearly any probe over 200cm works when everyone in the party has a beacon.

If you ski in an area with a snowpack deeper than 240cm on a regular basis I recommend getting a longer length probe....

Review Title

The best piece of gear I hope to never have to use - it goes in my pack and I forget about it. ...Unless the unthinkable happens, and then I prefer to be prepared. This light-weight and strong piece of equipment is what I want with me to locate a warm body in case of avalanche!
