Exped Downmat Sleeping Pad - 2006

Need a comfortable, lightweight way to warm up your winter camping trip? Get the Exped Downmat sleeping pad. This inflatable down-filled sleeping pad gives you the best of all worlds—the comfort of an air pad, plus the insulation of down. The Exped Downmat deflates and compresses to a size that's comparable to other air or foam pads. Inside the tough, UV-resistant laminated polyester fabric, a Nocar treatment prevents molding and clumping of the 700-fill down. Because you're breath contains moisture that can ruin the insulating qualities of the down, Outdoor Research provides a pump sack that quickly and safely inflates the sleeping pad.

Bottom Line: Sacrifice nothing with the Downmat.

Expensive but worth it!

By:

We've used the Downmat 9 for two winter seasons now while snow camping in a tent, paid full price for them and still don't regret it. They are thick enough so that you can sleep on your side (which I like to do), very comfortable and insulate better than anything else we've used, such as two sleeping pads. With these mats, we tend to sleep for about 10 hours while snow camping, which is longer than I normally sleep at home. (We use -20ºF/-29ºC down sleeping bags.) The lowest temperature we've used them in was 5ºF/-15ºC and we slept like rocks. Worth every penny!

Exped Down Short 7

By:
April 2, 2007

I have been sleeping on inflatable mattresses for over ten years. This is by far the most comfortable yet. Now a couple issues. The "pump-pillow" stuff sack is a good idea, but the pumping does take some time (5 min). It can look a little silly too. But is worth it if the R factor is important. My wife is using a primaloft Big Agnes Pad. Very comparable, and in some ways more user friendly. Which will prove more durable? The Exped has so far done well on stony ground (care was used), and should stand the test of time.

almost there!

The exped down mat is excellent and I have no reservations other than its dimensions. A tremendous amount of body heat is lost through the ground but this air mattress is down filled to prevent that. It is very durable and engineered very well but I wish it was wider.
It does pack quite small and that is a real plus. It also goes back into its stuff sack very easy which is unusual for most outdoor products.

Wonder what Hell feels like? Sleep in this mat!

By:
April 29, 2005

Wow, can't say how warm this mat is. I got the regular 9 and though I'm no fan of 20in wide mats (My arms are always touching the cold ground) the warmth this thing gave was amazing! Never in my life did I sweat in my back while lying on a mat. Exped claims this thing will go down to -40F but more like -20F to be realistic. I've always slept in 25in so 20in are not as comfortable. I would have bought the Downmat 9 Dlx for its width and would wish there was a 7 Dlx for weight savings. Overall, warm and durable and comes with a stuff sack/air pump/pillow/watertight bag!

Best sleep I've had yet

By:
October 3, 2005

I've used foamies, self-inflating mats and now this Exped mat. This mat was the best by far for comfort. For the weight and size (minimal), you get seven centimeters of cushioning - nearly three inches. It's been warm when I've used it, but haven't used it on snow / ice yet.

Great Sleeping Pad

By:

The Exped Downmat Sleeping Pad is excellent. Easy to inflate with the included air sack. These kept us very warm all night in 15F weather. No regrets with this pad.

Winter hammock camping with the Exped 7

By:
January 27, 2006

After I received the Exped 7 and experimented with all of its functions, I took it on a two night backpacking trip to the Savage Gulf State Park in Tennessee. This was in January so I was eager to find out if it would help keep me warm in my hammock. It was great! It was easy to inflate and did not leak. I put it in a Neat-sheet similar to a Speer SPE and put it inside the hammock. The low temperature was only in the 40's but the wind was blowing up to 20 mph. I used a WM Megalite bag and, with the Exped, I was able to stay warm and toasty with only my capilene top and bottom. I am looking forward to my next trip where I hope the temperature is colder and I can find out more about the comfort range of the Exped.

downmat 7

This pad takes a while to inflate and could use a little more down in it. It is very lightweight for the insulation and comfort. It likes to be packed in its own packsack which means I pack it internally instead of externally with my old Thermarest. It can be packed separate from the sack outside the pack, but I’m afraid of puncturing it.

Overall, this is the pad to buy. At the same weight as my Thermarest, it is a lot more comfortable, much warmer, and more hygienic because you never put the valve in your mouth. For any inflatable sleeping pad, just pick from this series, no need to look elsewhere.

crazy awesome!

This mat is AMAZING! It will make your sleeping bag degree rating better. It insulates against the cold ground so well. It is so unbelievably comfortable you will think you are floating on a cloud or brought your great mattress with you. I had back surgery and cannot sleep well anywhere but my home mattress, but I put some great sleep days in the backcountry on this! If I go on a road trip, this is with me. It does take a little more time to blow up with the stuff sack, but it is worth the extra time for amazing sleep!
