Nikwax TX Direct Spray-On treatment restores durable water repellency (DWR) for waterproof/breathable fabrics such as Gore-Tex, Ultrex, and Entrant. Washing and using fabrics can make them begin to absorb water or "wet out". Nikwax TX Direct completely restores surface water-repellency which enhances breathability. Nikwax TX Direct lasts several washings and does not need to be reapplied after every wash like other treatments. 5 fl. oz. (150 ml)
Bottom Line: No need to throw out that Gore-Tex shell because you're getting soggy when you ski. Simply retreat it with TX Direct Spray-On, and you'll be dry again.
I've tried using this on a lightweight rain jacket that has an outer nylon layer and an inner waterproof/breathable layer (not Gore-tex). I followed the directions and washed the jacket in tek wash, and then applied the spray as directed. I tested it, and water was NOT beading up on the jacket, so I tried applying it without washing first. But once again, water is still not beading up, just soaking into the outer nylon layer. Everyone has such great things to say about this stuff, I can't help but thinking I'm doing something wrong. Any suggestions?
After 8 years of not replenishing the waterproofing on my Solstice, I had pretty low expectations. A wash, a good coat of Nikwax and I am sealed again.
If you have any brand waterproof/breathable gear and it needs a "boost", this stuff is it. Actually, I think it's the only product on the market for restoration of W/B fabrics. I've used it on fabrics laminated or coated, and it restores water proofing to like-new status. Best application is at least two LIGHT coatings an hour or two apart. It's a simple cost-effective application for expensive over-priced W/B fabrics. Hey, there really is no such thing as waterproof-breathable. They just have a guvment standard to meet to qualify. When your guvment standard wears out, try this stuff. Saves you some bucks in the long run.
I wear burton products and their tags recommend that a spray application is best, I was wondering if this is the product to use or if theres something better? im not sure of the exact material used in the jacket, but its the original ipod jacket burton made. I also have this years Foursquare Yeung snowboard Pant.
Nikwax is great stuff... most of the products on the market is this category are comparable... Tekwax is another brand that I've used before with good success.
On a Mountain Hardware down vest, I found that the this product works most effectively if applied in 2 - 3 light coats and allowed to dry thoroughly between coats. Drying time is usually less than an hour if sprayed lightly and evenly and allowed to hang in a ventilated area with reasonably low humidity. (My den worked out fine, with coats applied between a couple of TV programs.) I'd be inclined to rate it higher than a 5, but I want to test the durability of the product.......if it continues to work as well as the immediate application over a period of time, I'll repost the review. As most of the stuff from BackCountry, this appears to be a quality product.
Hi there, I was just wondering if this product would work well on my Marmot Oracle which has the precip plus material. Hopefully it'll allow me to stay out in harsher weather longer, and also, a suggestion of which type of nikwax product to use? Wash in or spray? Thanks a lot.
This stuff works great! It will do exactly what you're looking for. It's just a personal preference thing between spray-on and wash-in. Personally I think the wash-in is easier to get a nice even coat over the whole of whatever you're waterproofing but that's just me. Either way you'll be fine.
Very happy with Nikwax TX-Direct Spray-On. I started noticing 'wet out' occurring on my favorite Columbia Titanium Shell after a quick application with the Nikwax Spray the rain, snow, mud beads up and rolls off, ready for many more adventures =) Also has worked well on my trail runners. Great product for a simple solution.
I'm wondering what Nikwax product would be best on an Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody? I see that Nikwax makes a 'softshell proof' but I worry about it affecting/comprimising the soft inner lining or breathability in my softshells...is this better to use? Or would the wash-in Softshell Proof work better? What about for my fleece? Again, will a wash-in be best ('polar proof') or a spray-on treatment?
I'd always suggest a wash-in over a spray-one. Using the Nikwax Tech before treatment will significantly improve your jackets breathability.http://www.backcountry.com/store/NIK0033/Nikwax-Tech-Wash.html
I've used this on single wall tents, my gore-tex shell, foul weather gear, and spray top. It really works well bringing back the waterproof properties of your breathables. Take your time when applying, don't over do the first coat. Do your best to follow the directions and you'll be very happy!
Just want to clarify that this product adds a layer of protection and does not remove any DWR product that the jacket, pant, etc. currently has? Thanks!
Don't be fooled (I was). This product is only 5 oz. It is not the bottle shown in the photo. 5 oz is only enough to treat two parkas. The small bottle sucks sustainability points.
This is, however, a great product for renewing the water repelancy of Goretex products.
I am the Key Account Manager at Nikwax North America. Your best option for Carhartt is to use Nikwax Tech Wash for cleaning and then use Nikwax Cotton Proof. Cotton is the most difficult fabric to waterproof, since it is incredibly hydrophilic, but it will increase it DWR properties. Ben
This stuff is great! Great way to bring back the waterproofing on your favorite waterproof breathable outerwear. The best results I have had so far were by washing my jacket and pants (NO FABRIC SOFTENER, it clogs up the breathability in the fabric). After the rinse cycle is finished I take the jacket and pants up to the bathroom and hang them up in the shower and spray them both evenly with the direct spray and let them hang dry overnight. The next morning toss them in the dryer on low heat for 20 minutes and they will bead water again like they are brand new. Definitely worth the $8 bucks and the bottle is still half full after using it 5 times this season.
I've got MH, REI, and Arc'T gear that will eventually need new DWR coatings. First, is this the proper spray for those or do I need something else? And second, how many ounces of the spray does it take to treat a single garment? Thanks.
I've used this with great results on my older Gore-Tex items. It actually made water bead-off the fabric like it was new. I've also used the wash-in product. I prefer the spray-on. The product I really like is NikWax Tent & Gear Proof for all my non-clothing gear. JW- I can't answer your second question directly, but I used one 10oz bottle to do two coats on my MH EV-2 tent and had enough left over for two coats on my spray top.
Use it on my softshell and gore-tex jact. it is like magic. the jacks look new and now I'm dry from in and outside! (one 150ml for one and a half jackt)
what about using this on fabrics that are not gore-tex, but need to be re-water proofed? such as snowboard pants that are 10,000 water proof...well not anymore.
Nikwax Tent & Gear Proof will work better for your application. I use this product on many different items. Re-apply every year for best results.http://www.backcountry.com/store/NIK0041/Nikwax-Tent-and-Gear-Proof
Wash that coat! Dirt is your water proofer's worst enemy. Your outfit will last longer and perform better if you wash it often. Wash with Nik wax tech wash then follow up with this spray on. I have used this product many times with great results. I usually end up spraying and then rubbing the jacket to get an even covering, then throwing it in the dryer on a low heat.
