Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pant - Men's

Mountain Khakis makes pants that withstand tough trails and time-consuming commutes. The Men's Original Mountain Pant's 100% cotton canvas is woven from two-ply threads for strength and suppleness. All fabric is pre-washed and shrunk before sewing for a broken-in feel right off the rack. Triple-stitched seams and heavy-duty bar tacks hold everything together and are complemented by a brass zipper and riveted metal button. Cut with a gusseted crotch, these pants are ready for a life on rocks, trails, and streams, or–if you must–wear them to work. Multiple inseam lengths let you wear the pant that fits you and your lifestyle best.

Bottom Line: Get a pair of pants that are made for life in the mountains.

Baptism by Husky Blood

By:
August 25, 2009

I threw these pants on the day after I got 'em and noticed three things: 1) the Freestone color is not very accurately portrayed on the backcountry website 2) the fit around the waist is snug as a gun but comfortable enough for a full workday of lifting, walking, squatting, and the occasional boat trailer rodeo show and 3) the hardy fabric and the bombproof construction inspire a certain rugged confidence in the wearer; I know this because at the end of the day when I was substitute feeding a couple of grizzled sled dogs who decided to throw down and draw blood, I miraculously managed to break it up and claim some alpha status. I think it was the pants. Consider me the latest convert to the First Church of Mountain Khakis. Father son & holy husky.

It probably depends on what you want them for, but the gusset is really nice. They seem a bit softer to the touch than Carhartt's as well.

I've been climbing in both, and these seem much less restrictive than Carhaarts, which stay stiff longer. I got them at a slightly discounted price, though, so it was an easier decision.

Ignore The Hype

By:
October 25, 2008

I bought two pair of these pants, one granite and one yellowstone. These pants are all hype and not worth the money for what you get. They are made with beefy material and good zippers, but that is where the quality stops. Both colors are ugly in person, and the granite pair faded to an undeniably purple hue after only two washings in cold water. They are obviously slopped together at MK's Cambodian sweatshop, with sloppy stitching and little attention to detail throughout. At $70 each, there should not be these types of defects in workmanship. Mountain Khakis issued a return authorization for the granite pair, stating that excessive fading is a common problem with the granite(but apparently not important enough to fix) but refused to help me with the other pair. The representative at MK was not friendly, and did not offer any other options. Overall, these pants are over priced and over hyped.

The Best and The Worst in pants

By:
November 21, 2008

I have a pair of MK Orig. Mtn Pant in yellowish color that are my favorite pants, bar none. I bought two more pairs in gray and dark. Both of these pairs of pants fit nicely on the first wearing. I then washed them and wore them, washed-wore, washed-wore and increasingly the fit of the pants became more and more miserable. They shrank in weird ways, especially in the waist and thighs, until I simply could not wear them. The dark color also turned purple. In the end, the good people at Backcountry took them back. I am baffled, since I am, at this moment, wearing my 1-year-old yellow colored pants and they still fit great. I bought my good pair on sale and think the pants are overpriced. Despite that my yellow ones are increasingly stained and worn, and I could stand to get another pair, I am reluctant to purchase MK pants because of the apparent lack of quality control or consistency of manufacture.

Still a carhart guy

By:
July 28, 2009

I heard that these pants were supposedly much better than carharts. I have found that they are not bad but they are not better. I wear a 36x34 in all pants and these ones are tight and on the shorter side. I still wear them so it is not that big of a problem. Also my carharts break in after a year or so and become very comfortable, these have yet to show any sign of becoming more comfortbale to wear. The gusseted crotch is nice thought, that is the one place on my carharts that has gotten a small hole from being active. Also unless you get them on sale I am not sure if they are worth the full price

Great Pants/small waist size

By:
March 23, 2009

These pants are great and durable! My only issue is that the waist runs about 2" smaller than average sizes. For instance, I wear a 35 or 36 normally. In these pants I wear a 38.

Well Built and Rugged

By:
September 30, 2008

Well built pants. While a heavy duty cotton they don't appear to be stiff (only two washings so far). Good attention to detail with an extra layer of material reinforcing the back pockets and pant cuffs--back side. Based on other pants that I have, I would say that the sizing/fit is correct for the waist and inseam length.

Great pants, well designed and constructed tough. Runs true to size, so you can buy with confidence (now have two pairs). Fit is a bit different to Alpine Utility model but both are super comfortable and well proportioned.

Looking forward to many years service.

Toss out your Carhartt's

By:
April 23, 2009

My orignal MK's have usurped the Carthartts in my drawer. They fit better, they feel better, and they wear better. I'm pretty tall with long legs, and Carharttt amd MK are the only workpants that fit, as they have inseams of 36". The pocket edge where my pocket knife lives started to fray a bit, no problem, I put the pocket onthe sewing machine with some nylon thread and made a wear patch. The main seams are triple stiched, and the croch gusset fit real well after the second washing.

By:
October 16, 2006

Granted, they're a bit on the expensive side, but these pants are nonetheless worth the cost. They're comfortable yet durable. They can fill the bill equally well both at work and play. Great pants! They are a bit stiff, so expect a little bit of a "break-in" period. Otherwise, I have no complaints. I get the feeling I'll have them for a long, long time.

Undersized skinny-man pant.

By:
October 17, 2008

If you have thick thighs watch out.. Very narrow at the thighs. These pants rest high at the waist... above my belly button... much like the pants my grandfather and my junior high English teacher wore. If you are looking for a relaxed or loose fit just above the hips look elsewhere. This cut will benefit the naturally long-legged and the narrow-hipped distance runners out there. Not for the beefy! Gusset in crotch was a pleasant surprise and the quality of the product was superb.

Great pant, - HOWEVER...

By:
December 21, 2008

Figured it'd be useful to review these separate from the alpine utility pant by MK. If you're looking for a more burly pant, go with the Alpine Utility. They are heavier, but the reinforced knees and seat are solid. Probably better used in harsh and rigorous activities. Not that the Original Mountain pant isn't durable. As in the review on the Alpine Utility pant...MKs are sturdily constructed, and yes - pricey. But, like all other gear are an investment. That being said, I love MKs. Have bouldered and hiked in them and I know plenty of people who routinely climb, travel, kayak, and backpack in them. I have multiple pairs, which brings me to my only qualm... MK seems to have a quality control issue with their sizing (as one can see from previous reviews). Each pair of my 30x32 pants fits differently. I highly recommend buying them IN store rather than online, unless you can readily return them if they do not fit properly. Love the product, but they need to improve upon this one fault.

one of the most comfortable pair of pants i own. good to wear casually or out in the woods. most people prefer not to hike in cotton however, i have found there to be no problem, these pants are very durable and pretty light wait in my opinion. i also find them to be a good winter hiking pant for around Georgia,Alabama,Tennessee. i gave my dad a pair for Christmas to use while working on the farm or going to the hunting lease. these pants are also comfortable and look good to wear around town.

Nice pants, big bucks

By:
February 13, 2008

I have mixed feelings about these pants. They are very well made, comfortable and tend to be the pants I wear the most lately. Having said that, they are a bit overpriced and ride a little higher than I’m used to. After years of deliberation about dropping the dough on MKs I’m glad I did once, but won’t be buying more unless the price drops. This site is still the best though!

August 7, 2008

Still stand by my earlier comments (awesome pants, great fit etc), but would caution about the colours...have managed to inadvertently order another pair of Freestone, thinking the pair I had were Yellowstone. So Freestone is not as grey as it appears - still a nice colour, though and other comments I've read indicate the Granite is more purple than it seems on the screen too.

Guess I've just got a dress pair and a work pair now! :-)

Great pants, small waist

By:
November 18, 2008

Like many others have stated, order the waist a size up. I normally fit into a 32 but could barely button it. Length is what I expected for a 34. The gusseted crotch is great. I was installing insulation in a crawlspace in these pants lately and was in all sorts of akward, squatting positions, but the pants let you move freely with plenty of room. I'm betting the material will hold up well as it feels pretty durable. I got them half off but not sure though if I would have paid $70 for them. Even so, waaaay better than the cheap work jeans I had been wearing for years.

Rough and Tumble Pants

By:
August 25, 2008

Love these pants. They can take a beating. I'm never worried about shredding a pocket or ripping a hole in them. They wear like iron. The tradeoff is that they need a little breaking in. A brand new pair are stiff. Once they are dialed you won't wear another pair of pants.

Good pants, bad quality control

By:
June 30, 2009

I'm essentially duplicating my review of the Alpine Utility pant, since they are so similar.

Overall, I love these pants, although it took me a while to acquire the right size. These are a little less stiff (and therefore probably less durable) than the Alpine Utility pant, although they are still much better than most pants out there. They are quite comfortable and are probably fine for most uses. If you're going to be kneeling a lot or climbing around on things (construction, etc), go for the Alpine Utility. Otherwise, these are perfect. One thing: the Freestone color on Backcountry.com is much darker than the reality. Mountain Khakis' website has much more accurate colors.

That said, Mountain Khakis has some serious quality control issues. I have ordered several pairs of pants from them in a variety of different styles, and the lengths have varied by as much as three inches (all were ordered as the same size). One pair was so short that I called MK directly to complain. They helped me exchange at no charge, but I would have preferred that the pants were right in the first place. They have a good product, but I doubt I would buy another pair given the hassle.

My rating is:
Pants: 5 stars
Mountain Khakis: 2 stars

I came across these at an outdoor shop when shopping for Christmas gifts. Found one pair in my size and decided to grab them. I have purchased two more pairs from B.COM. Poor Quality

By:
November 17, 2008

I really wanted to love these pants. Fabric felt good, but just didn't hold up for the price. On the first washing they shrank a ton and they began to get pulls in the canvas all over the seams. Eventually they failed, completely tearing out. Normally I wear 34 x 32 the waist on these pants sits above your belly button. If you wear them at your waist, the crotch is too low for the gusset to actually work and you hit resistance.

The fabric does feel good, if they can fix the crotch to waist length and stop the canvas from breaking down so quickly they might be worth a lower price, but not the current one, and certainly not when they fail so fast.

Buy Carhartt!

Former Special Forces

Quality, absolute quality. Plus the best looking, most comfortable pants I have ever owned. These are as comfortable and rugged as the BDU's (Battle Dress Uniform) I used to wear when I was in the Army Special Forces but a lot more stylish! Five star recommendation.

Original Mountain Pant

By:
May 5, 2006

I dig the quality of the material and seams seem to be quite durable. The cut of the pants is the reason I am returning them. The legs are okay, but the rise is a little tall. (Meaning the waistband hits at or just above the navel.) Also; another reviewer mentioned the pants shrunk a little. I am normally a 34-32; I ordered 36-34 anticipating an incorrect sizing from the manufacturer. I opened the package, put the pants on, and they seemed to be more like size 34 or smaller. Who knows how much they would have shrunk after washing?

Mountain Khakis are a big success!

By:

I've never bought pants from a catalog before, but these just looked right for my husband. He LOVES them. They're well made and true to size. The color is unusual for him -- and a little different than it looked on the internet -- but he likes it.

better then levi's

By:
November 22, 2006

I have three pairs. I like the longer inseam and the reinforced pant cuff at the back of the pant. Deep front pockets, takes a wider belt, good fit and tough but not stiff feeling. Not too skinny in the thigh and not some teenagers mega-baggy fit. I wear 'em working outdoors and they are nice enough to pass as casual slacks at nicer restaurants.. The ones that frown on denim jeans

Great pants

By:
November 7, 2006

I just felt that I owed it to MK to let it be known that these are the toughest best fitting pants I have ever owned. I wore them for a week this summer summiting 14ners and they came out looking pretty clean and with out a blemish to the fabric. I have since worn them at least twice a week and have them on right now. They never look dirty and have held up great.

Awkward sizing

Nice pants, but dang, make sure you try them out in a store somewhere first before buying them. Sizing is awkward.

Tougher than rock

By:
November 7, 2007

Being a rock climber I usually try to lock for tough pants that also look good to wear casually. This pant is a perfect example of a hybrid of a performance pant that is also a great casual pant. The triple stitching and material make this pant pratically indestructible.

Close to Perfect

By:
April 24, 2008

The most versitile pair of pants I own. Tough, but good loking, fabric and a gussted crotch make these pants a perfect from the office to the backcountry. They look great with "nice" shoes and hiking boots both.

Sweet Slacks

By:
December 7, 2007

I got these pants 2 months ago for my boyfriend and he loves them. If I didn't pull them off him to wash them once in a while he'd always be wearing them! They hold up all week while he's working and still look nice at the end of the week if he wants to throw a nice shirt on with them. In 2 months they still look brand new!

The Best

By:
December 12, 2007

I work in construction and lead an active outdoor lifestyle, these pants are simply the best.Get a pair, trust me. I go through work pants very quickly, these are made to last and way more comfortable then the competition.Only design flaw to me is the second right-hand front pocket, kind of weird, overall a small gripe for a perfect product.

great pants,Seem real tough, not enough hours on 'em yet to know for sure, but they feel as burly as carhartts, but way softer hand, which makes me want to wear them at all times. they run small. I normally wear a 34 and they are real snug. Got a pair of 36 and they are money.

Sizing

By:
November 4, 2008

32x32 size pants usually fit me pretty well, no matter where they're from. The Mountain Khakis were long legged, and skinny waisted. I couldnt even button them. Just beware when picking your size, they run long and skinny. Sweet pants though. If I ever have to fight a bear, I'll be sure to wear the Mountain Khakis.

Solid pants for the tall and lanky

By:
January 4, 2009

Since purchasing I have hiked and climbed in these about a half a dozen times and they are holding up with the promised durability I had read about. Gusseted crotch is great for climbing and the thick material is a plus in cold weather. Beware: sizing is awkward (as mentioned in other reviews). They fit me perfectly at 34x34 but I'm an awkward lanky size (6'4" 200).

Great pants

By:
October 21, 2008

I have MK's, Carhardt & Orvis. The MK's are definately rugged. The Orvis pants I have are quite similer, especially since they sell both at their stores. The orvis "slacks' are a little more upscale in appearence, but the MK's seem more durable.

Love them -- but buy big

By:
March 23, 2009

Love these pants! I've been a dedicated Carhartt wearer for years, and these pants are definitely an upgrade. They are far more comfortable and seem about as durable if not more so than the double-fronted Carhartts I've been wearing, and are only marginally more expensive. Excellent pants for hiking, working with animals and plants, biking, kayaking, etc, etc, etc. The weave is durable but rather light for a cotton duck, so they are great in the Deep Southern summers compared to some other pants but don't fare so well in the winter.

Like other posters have noted, I intentionally bought a size up and they were just the right size. I usually wear 38x32, but I bought 40x34 and they fit perfectly.

MK Pants

By:
April 23, 2009

The sizing is off, the pants shrink after few
washes.
I bought one pants at REI and few at backcountry.com.
I can't wear my pants any more, they are hanging
in the closet, the waist is small for me.
Granit color bleeds and will lose color.
Other than above they are made very well, I like
them, I will try to buy one more pants a size larger, but, if these problems continue my loyalty
will discontinue.
I hope responsible individuals are reading these
reviews, it seems like there are problems and
they need to be resolved.

Mtn Khaki

By:
March 25, 2008

I got this pair of Mtn Khakis, probably the only one in Singapore right now and for a long time. I would like it lighter but the weight and the texture makes it incredibly strong! I thought nothing could destroy this pair of pants. I'm waiting to try it out.

Not worth the money

By:
October 17, 2008

These are probably best suited for wearing around town, but not as a true work pant. I though these pants were great when I first started wearing them, but then some stitching around the belt loops came undone. It looked really bad and this was probably after 2 washings. It was so bad that I took pictures and sent them to Mountain Khakis. They said to return them at point-of-purchase. I've read other people have had this issue too. No problem, but then my second pair started to rip in the knee and I'm not hard on these pants. I'd save your money and stick with Carhartt's.

comfortable pants that will hold up great to anything you can throw at it.. go straight from the office to your local boulders. They are a bit stiff at first but after a few washes they feel great. Very comparable to a Carhartt but more stylish.

Original Mountain Pant

These pants are super rugged but extremely comfortable. My sig. others builds decks all winter and did not take them off the entire season. They are still ready for another rough winter. Plus, they are so comfortable that you can wear them out to dinner or the bar after work.

Rugged and good looking

By: Backcountry.com Employee
December 31, 2007

I was very impressed when I got these pants. They are rugged but still way softer than I thought they would be. Well built, I feel like these will hold up to constant abuse. They look great as well. And they have kept me warm during the cold winter in the mountains. Now I need to decide what other pants I need to get my Mountain Khaki's...

These are by far my favorite pair of pants. I wear them when I'm working, when I'm out on the town, when I'm at work, when I'm climbing...you get the point. They are super comfy. The gusseted crotch allows you to do just about anything and stay comfortable the whole time. Very durable and reliable. I like these better than Carhartts.

Solid, plain and simple

By: Backcountry.com Alumni
January 19, 2006

I've worn these pants for about 3 months now. At first I wanted to keep them all nice and without blemishes as I've been building a home. The reality is that they hold up better than any pant I own, and even working out in the cold I've found them to be warmer than regular jeans. Despite framing, finishing work, digging dirt, building decks and the like the only thing that has started to break down is the pocket edge where I continually clip my measuring tape. I doubt they were built for this.

I usually wear a 36x34 and found that they shrunk just a bit in length - I still wear them 2-3 times a week!

These are some of the best pants I have ever bought! The pant is triple stitched with double layers of fabric at the pant leg cuffs. You can wear these for days in a row and they still look great!
