Mountain House Chicken Stew - 2 Serving Entree

So you want chicken stew in the backcountry and you finally figured out you can't bring raw chicken on a week-long backpacking trip. Mountain House's Chicken Stew for two is freeze dried so it's lightweight, easy to prepare, and tastes great. The perfect home-cookin' backcountry companion.

Bottom Line: So easy to cook it'll make anyone look like they know what they're doing, now if you could just find your way back to the trail.

Not Too Bad

By:
December 27, 2007

I've eaten more chicken stew than any other MH variety. I have to admit it's not too bad especially after returning to camp from a long climbing day & you've starving. Manageable amount of sodium but still a little high for one meal.

TASTY HOT DINNER

By:
January 13, 2009

It has been a while since I bought and ate a Freeze Dried meal . This is my first one in America . I had had a long day and had just finished pitching my tent in the snow . It was now dark and I fired up the old MSR stove . All I had to do was boil the water and pour it into the food packet. I sat and impatiently waited the suggested 8 to 9 minutes. I really enjoyed the chicken stew. I reckon the full packet (two portions) is good for a big bloke after a hard day on the hill .
Now I see there is a curry chicken dinner ...hmmm.........

Decent-tasting and filling

By:
May 25, 2009

This is lightweight, easy to make, filling, and actually tastes good after a hard day on the trail. The stew is pretty thick, with a nice mix of chicken and potatoes. One 2-serving packet could be a large meal for one person, or can be shared by two smaller people. For a standard, hungry adult, a half of a packet probably would not be enough to serve as a full meal.

naaasty

Always on the hunt for the tastiest freeze dried food, I decided to give this one a whirl. Based on the other recommendations here, I stocked up since it wasn't to be found locally. Having high faith in the word of my fellow enthusiasts, and expecting a five star wonder, I loaded up the bear can with a few days worth without even trying it. It's probably one of the worst Mountain house meals I've ever had. Too many potatoes and incredibly bland, even when starving. It might as well be unseasoned potato soup. Right now, it's relegated to emergency backup, or better yet, I can pawn it off on someone who's a lot hungrier than I could ever be. Yeah, it's that bad.

Good, better than average

By:
December 12, 2008

After a day long hike, I was happy to have a double portion, no problem to finish the whole pack.
Adding a bit of salt and pepper improves the bit boring taste. Adding some Parmesan Cheese from a fellow hiker was also nice.
Anyhow there is no lighter and easier to prepare meal than these freeze dried meals, and this Mountain House Stew is definitely one of the better ones.

Mountain House Chicken Stew - great!

By: Backcountry.com Employee

Mountain House makes the best dehydrated meals of any brand I've tried. They are consistently lightweight (around 5oz), and always are simple to make. This one is prepared as almost all are, with 2 cups of boiling water reconstituting the meal for around 10 minutes. After that, dinner is server, and tastes great after a long day.

This was only water and 10 minutes and fed two of us on a very cold night. Kept me warm and full. Great Flavor too!
