Mountain Hardwear Wraith SL -20 Sleeping Bag: -20 Degree Down

From Denali basecamp to frigid, multi-day ski tours, the Mountain Hardwear Wraith SL -20 Sleeping Bag provides a warm, lofty barrier between you and the harsh mountain cold. With super-compressible 800-fill down and a Conduit SL shell to block moisture, the Wraith is nearly impervious to whatever weather you’ll encounter. The roomy cut reduces the coffin feeling on stormy, tent-bound days.

  • Tailored hood and face gasket seal in warm air
  • Welded, watertight baffle construction lowers weight and eliminates cold spots
  • Wide winter mummy cut allows for air circulation and lets you change clothes inside
  • Comfort footbox follows natural shape of your feet
  • Double draft tubes block cold air from entering

Bottom Line: The Wraith is a feather-filled force field against the world's coldest climates.

I got a sweet deal on this bag so I can't complain about the hefty price tag. I just returned from Alaska and have to say that this bag shined in every way possible. For being a -20F bag, the Wraith was light weight and highly compressible which made stuffing the backpack with numb fingers in the morning much easier. The cut is fitted yet roomy which allowed me to dry out my gear inside the bag without sacrificing too much dead space. Also the conduit SL material was very effective at keeping any condensation from soaking into the down.

Wraith

I searched long and hard for a down bag with a water proof outer shell. I also needed a really warm one for winter camping. I love Mountain Hardwear and was determined to get this bag when I found it. My first night in it (well below freezing, but probably not -20) I didn't sleep as warm as I was hoping, waking several times close to shivering. Since that first night I have slept below freezing several times and have been warm in it. Last trip was right around freezing and I had to unzip it to let some cool air in. In the morning I checked my watch thermometer and it read 90 degrees (of course that is on my wrist also). I has sprinkled on my a little and the bag shed the water right off. Big negative- the zippers suck! it is difficult to move the zippers up and down and the bag often catches in the zipper. The head compartment is also different (smaller) than most bags that I am used to (can't add clothing to make a pillow). Pluses- down bag that compresses and sheds water. Final- good bag and hate the zipper.

Better warm than....waking up in the middle of the night....

Well I would be able to give a better review if my girlfriend didn't take it from me on a cold cold night. I'll give you her feedback and compare it to my Ghost SL. I am one to believe that you should be warmer than not. The Wraith is obviously lighter but less cushion and the neck guard is much lighter that the Ghost. If you're going to do 4 season, spend a few more bucks and get the Ghost. If you're concerned about weather and weight, get the Wraith. Most people doing really reach below 40. Although depending on your sleeping pad, you can balance with the bag. I've heard of the zipper getting caught on the bag, well this is because the bag is very fluffy (a good thing). Most bag will do the same. My NorthFace 20+ gets caught too. The welded seams on with Mt Hardware is amazing. They virtually made a bag without stitching, amazing technology. That means that you can reduce on stitching and taping = very little weight but it's the details that counts. GF said that because girls get colder, she should have it. As she didn't complain in the morning, I guess it was good for me too. BTW, feather is much much more compressable than synthetic. Unless you just casually use your bag, you have to get feathers. The bird is the word.
