The Mountain Hardwear Men's Wicked Tee has your back for wicking, quick-drying athletic performance. With a long-cut back for added coverage when cycling or busting a dyno move, added sun protection so you don't become a lobster, and a loose fit for casual comfort, this tee knocks cotton out cold.
ok full disclosure i'm a mountain hardwear athlete. however i'll give you the straight dope on this shirt. it's great.. but not for everything. it's no lie that it wicks great. i've used it as a base layer while alpine ski touring and it performed well. i've worn it in all conditions. running in the wet and rain of seattle and the northwest is not where this shirt excels. on a rainy day it holds more moisture than some other base layer shirts. however it's also more substantial than those whisper shirts so when the wind whips up you don't feel naked. in the dry conditions of the wasatch mountains it does awesome. it's kind of course so i find that on long long long runs (i'm talking like 30+ miles) it causes chafing on my nipples quicker than some other shirts.
I had always doubted the value of wicking shirts over good old cotton, but I'm sold. I'm a climber, so I don't do a lot of cardio, but I had this shirt at Smith Rocks a few weeks ago in August, carrying a 50-pound pack in 100+ weather, and that whole gross sticky feeling that comes when you take a pack off and your shirt glues itself to your back was gone entirely. I wore it for a week straight and it worked great. Highly recommended.
It has a UPF rating of 15 (approx SPF of 40) which means it blocks 93% of UVA and UVB rays. UPF ratings are used to describe how much of UV is absorbed by the fabric and not your skin.
I bought two. Then I bought one more, now I own seven of them. Pretty lame MH tried to improve the shirt and make it in 09 called "Light Wicked T." That shirt sucks. This one, if you can still find them are just perfect. I hike in them and trail run in them. Take them off for 05 minutes and hang them in a tree in the sun and they will be dry when you are ready to roll.
The neckband is elastic enough where you can easily slip your noggin through it, but not so stretchy where it would permanently stretch out of shape (unless you were abusing it, of course). I personally don't like really tight neck bands that chafe or feel restrictive in anyway and these exhibited no such problem.
I run long distance on both roads and trails and in all sorts of conditions ranging from hot mugginess to frigid mountain air. This shirt is fantastic regardless of the conditions, and has saved me the hassle of packing extra shirts. It wicks away moisture just as the name implies keeping me cool when the sun beats down. If the weather is cool you can get the long-sleeved edition and just slide the sleeves up if you don't need them. If it is cold/wet out, use this as a baselayer and simply throw a lightweight water-resistant windshirt/windbreaker on overtop (many of them are just a few ounces).
I am in the process of purchasing an assortment of these since I like them so much... the fit is surprisingly accurate and slim (I'm 5'9", 145lbs and wear a small). And at 20-30 bucks, you simply can't go wrong with this shirt.
These are the team shirts for my Mountain Rescue Team. Performance wise, they are awesome. We use them for multiple days at a time, and they work great. They wick better than any other tech type shirt I've worn, and the paneling is cut to move with you, so there is no binding (which is great while climbing) They do rub on the nipples a bit...not my kind of thing...but some may enjoy it I guess.
On to the smell. Now, I'm speaking for the rest of the people on the team, because when I sweat, my body aroma resembles a nice mix of fresh baked cookies, spring rain, and wildflowers. The rest of our team though, gets a little rank after a few days. This shirt doesn't seem to fight the stench as much as others I've worn. Personally I don't notice it, but others on the team have said they have noticed it.
Final thoughts~ You won't regret buying these. I like them enough while on training that I've purchased two more to wear on personal time.
Great lightweight wicking shirt as a stand-alone or a baselayer from a great company, but as already mentioned, it VERY EASILY gets snagged. I love it, but being so careful gets annoying.
I just bought my first Mountain Hardwear Wicked Tech T-shirts and I am very happy with them. They are perfect! They WILL snag at some point, but that will not take away from its performance. Very glad to have purchased these shirts.
I got one of these from the discount section. I couldn't be more pleased. While the pattern seems to work well for moving sweat away from your body, it won't win any beauty contests.
I absolutely LOVE this shirt. It looks great, and it feels even better. It does, however snag easily; and it does soak up body odor rather quickly. It is still a great shirt, and I wear it all the time. I would recommend this shirt to anyone who doesn't spent all the time walking through briers.
These shirts are super light, and super breathable. It wicks away the sweat in no time, and drys very quickly. Great for a winter base layer and just a shirt in the summer.
Works great for trail running, and backpacking trips for a weekend or so.Catch moisture easy while u sweet heavy.Use it for trips around mountains in norway for up to a week.Wash it in rivers and it dryes fast on your backpack. For the price one of the best shirts on the market.
This is a great performance tee. Provides comfort on those hot days and wicks away the sweat. Like other reviews, this tee pills easily. Avoid sharp branches and other things that can snag.
This tee shirt rocks, it breathes like a champ, dries quickly, doesnt hold odor and retains a great shape. It does snag easily and the colors could be revamped but I own 5 and am very, very happy with them.
I work for backcountry.com and I have a good number of shirts similar to this one. I did the wonderland trail around Mt. Rainier this summer and I bought 3 of these shirts specifically for this trip. So light, so wicking, so easy to clean and they dry so fast. Good colors, and they put out new colors every year so you can mix it up. I highly recommend this shirt. One note: they snag a little easy but the snag doesn't spread, the chipmunks, marmots, mountain goats, bear, and the rest of the wild animals don't give a care, why should you? I'll take comfort and function over looking good any day. Don't get me wrong, they are definitely tough enough unless you're gonna be rubbing against rocks or trees all day
This shirt is incredibly comfortable and cool in warm weather, and also makes a great wicking base-layer. Like wearing air. But its high-tech fabric snags incredibly easily (even truer of Golite's C-thru fabric). Just brushing against twigs or leaning against a rough surface pulls out its very fine threads leaving them dangling and frayed. If you're willing to treat this shirt gently, you'll love it.
I live in Florida and this is a great shirt to keep you cool and comfy in the wicked Florida heat. Nice feel to the material and good looking. I have three of them and love them.
This wicking T-Shirt is my favorite out of various brands. It feels heavy enough without being too heavy. Nice quality fabric wicks well, keeps you very dry. The only down to this is their lack of a variety of colors.
Spent a week with this shirt in the boundary waters in Northen MN. Despite temps in the mid 80s during the day I never felt wet despite sweating profusely during several long portages with canoe & gear. The fabric does "snag" fairly easily but who cares when you're out in the wilderness!
The shirt I bought for a backpacking trip worked well. It did snag in a few places, but like someone else said, the snag doesn't grow. The shirt dries very fast and feels good on the skin when you are sweating.
The Wicked Tech shirt is one of the best wicking and most breathable shirts in my closet. The fit is fairly baggy and loose, so if you are often between sizes, I'd recommend getting the smaller size. The fabric is soft and has a nice ability to stretch. While the shirt owes its amazing breathability and wicking ability to its construction, it has a tendency to catch on things easily resulting in small snags hanging off. Because of this, I would not recommend it for any activity in which the shirt will make contact with rough surfaces such as rock climbing. However, if you don't mind snags hanging off your shirt or are inclined to be extra careful when wearing it, this is a great shirt for the price.
I'm not sure what went wrong in the Mountain Hardwear R&D division cause they started with a light fabric that breathes well and is comfortable but that's about all this shirt has going for it. The fabric is very susceptible to snags, more so than any performance tee I've ever owned. The sizing needs help - I got an XL and it's about the width of a XXL and the length of a L. I may wear this shirt at last resort but I think it will endure a lifetime at the bottom of my performance tee stack until I find someone to give it away to (my brother in law most likely). Bummer.
Nice, lightweight material, but it is too delicate for my appetite. Snags on everything. I would look for a different shirt if you are hard on your shirts.
Great all around shirt. I use it from running to a base layer, or just around the house. The only draw back is that it easily snags. Other than taht it feels and fits great.
I own a few of these shirts in various colors and really appreciate the breathability of the material. The fit is perfect and the shirt is very comfortable. The material dries very quickly which is another added bonus. It does however get snags on the material which can cause runs or holes in the shirt.
The Mountain Hardware Wicked Tech T-Shirt lives up to its name, whether I am cutting grass, ripping single track, or hiking.....just being outdoors when the weather turns hot it truly is "wicked" - as in wicked cool. The loose fit is just right and it has great wicking performance and dries fast as well. A great all rounder, base layer, or single layer....you just can't go wrong. I have 5 of them now and #6 is on the way. cheers.
Great performance shirt. Does all the things you want a synthetic to do. I don't seem to have the picking/pilling problems that some others do. Looks great and does what I want it to. I'll be adding more to my closet.
I have bought several of these for my boyfriend and my dad. This shirt does a great job wicking away sweat and it dries quickly. My boyfriend does intense workouts in these and remains drier! They look great too! My only concern is that they are easily ruined if they snag on something-the material pills and is no longer uniform and after having that occur several times, the shirt no longer looks as nice (it still works functionally though!).
Just returned from a hot, humid cycling trip across Iowa (RAGBRAI) and found this gear awesome for wicking moisture and quick drying when hand washed in campsite...very comfortable too!
Very fast drying & great for daily cycling to commute to work; run errands; or just cycle for exercise & recreational. Keeps you cool & dry. I plan to buy more shirts.
I wore this shirt four days straight in the woods and it didn't get clammy like most fabrics do in the humidity which I really appreciated. Did get some snags though. I'm medium but think I'll try a large the next time. It's a nice thing.
I bought this t-shirt for my husband, and then confiscated when I couldn't find women's wicking t-shirts that would fit me. Used for two weeks in wet tropics. Only started to smell a bit from sweat and salt air after several days. A quick wash in shampoo and it dried in just a few hours in very humid conditions. Wish it came in a v-neck and more colors. Wish I could find women's shirt of this material, so sleeves would be shorter.
This is a great shirt for running in hot weather. I stay cool and comfortable - with no chaffing. Seems to be sturdy enough from what I've done. Other reviewers have said that it stays odor free - I disagree. After just a short run it stinks badly - plus there is a chemical smell that it exudes whether clean or dirty.
I have been wearing wicked T's for the last 10 years, The fit feel and look are unbeatable. I hike 2 to 3 times a week and these T's do there natural born thing. I have 20 of the wicked T's I wear them every day, and I wear them to work, I'm an air personality at a hot a/c radio station in the hot hot so cal hi desert, and inside the station it do get hot, the wicked T's keep me dry and feel great all day, thanks Mountain Hardwear for a great Shirt that really works. The comfort level is awesome with this T. It's extremely light and does not intrude. I do agree with another review regarding its durability. If you trail run you're going to snag early and often. If you stay out of the woods then you'll be fine. However, the snags only build character.
I love this shirt. Its very lightweight, and wicks moisture with the best of them. This shirt has held up very well to many miles on the trail. The seams don't irritate my shoulders under a heavy backpack and it rides up very little. The only downside is that you have to slow down when people ask you were you got it.
I recently bought three wicking t-shirts here: this, a north face and an icebreaker. This works just as well as those two despite costing less. If you let it dry on you, you will be chilly, but take it off for about an hour and it will be dry. It's loose fitting and very soft, leading to a very comfortable feeling. You will not regret buying this shirt. Others have commented about pilling and snagging, but I have yet to experience that - it looks as good today as it did when I got it. Be sure to NOT use fabric softener with wicking t-shirts in a dryer as the fabric softener will coat the t-shirt and interfere with the wicking.
