With its Windstopper Featherweight fabric, the Mountain Hardwear Men's Transition Zip T blocks harsh winds on your morning run or afternoon bike ride. This windshirt keeps you comfortable during your spring and fall workouts. Stretch cuffs on the Transition's long sleeves keep cold air out, while stretch side panels and articulated sleeves give you natural mobility. This windproof top's slim fit and taped construction provide smooth layering free of uncomfortable pressure points, and the front zipper lets you regulate your temperature as you blast down the trail.
Bottom Line: The Mountain Hardwear Transition Zip T keeps cold wind out of your workout.
This is my absolute favorite piece. This shirt makes it into my pack all 4 seasons. I climb, backcountry ski, ride my bike, backpack, EVERYTHING in this shirt. It's very breathable. Blocks wind, and is very lite. Incredibly comfortable during aerobic output, and keeps you warm and dry when you rest at a belay, or dig a pit. I'm 5' 10", 145lbs and I wear a medium.
This shirt breathes, sheds light snow and fights the wind, those are good things. I wear this top skiing everyday with just a light t-shirt underneath and I don't have to fuss around too much with layering until I'm finished hiking and ready to ski. It's a simple layer that does a lot.
I have an older, standard weight version and a featherweight version of this shirt. They are awesome, but since moving back to the Northeast a couple years ago I would like another standard weight version, but cannot seem to find it any where. Does MH only make the featherweight version these days?
I have this same item that's probably 6 yrs old and the fit/cut is much better on it- it's a uniform snug fit all over. The fit on the 2009 product (large) I received is odd: the waist and chest are snug as should be (like my original)- but the arms are huge in diameter. It's cut for someone with a 32" waist, 40" chest and 20" biceps- a combination that doesn't exist outside of animation. The arms are long enough, probably an inch longer than my original which is fine. Overall quality is great like all MH products. Dear MH- please get your sizing straight; I love your gear but you seem to be straying from your original sensible, uniform athletic cuts.
Great piece if you need protection from the wind without ANY bulk! Really tough, packs small and sheds light rain/snow pretty well. This shell is designed to be tight so if you plan on having it as a layering piece over a medium weight (like a MHW power stretch zip t) get a larger sz than normal. Great value!! I must say though, the hooded version might be better if you plan on using it for alpine climbing.
Not Gore-Tex, though made by the same company. If you're looking for something waterproof, look elsewhere. This will shed light rain for a while, but no more than that. Completely windproof, however. It's one of my favorite pieces. It's lasted about six years and is in my regular rotation. "Made by" the Gore-Tex company? Yes. "Is it" Gore Tex? No.
check out the mh website --------------------------The Transition Softshell is considered by Gore to be Gore Windstopper. Windstopper is a division of GoreTex. It was once called Gore N2S (N=next 2=to S=Skin) as it is a Gore Windstopper laminate shell designed to be worn next to your skin almost like long underwear. The reason? The closer you get a windproof (or water proof for that matter) laminate to your body the better it breathes. Breathable... windproof... perfect.
This is by far my favorite layer i own! Super wind proof, water resistant, durable, and breathable. This makes it into my pack for all the hikes i do, that is if i'm not already wearing(which most of the time i am!!). I'm curious to see how it performs in deeper snow but i'm sure it will meet the task at hand and keep the winds icy bite away from me. Fits well and not tight and was true to size. I wish this had thumb holes in the sleeves like the hooded version does. This is by far a must have for any adventure!
I love my transition. Got it for $70 and it was worth every penny. Pair it up with a light soft shell and nothing's going to get through. The zipper seams used to bother me a bit but I don't notice them any more. Blocks wind like none other. Great for nordic skiing or winter running. Slim fit. I'm 5'9" 140 and a the medium is kinda tight. The stretch panels at the sides, bottom, and sleeves are a nice touch. Really great garment.
I can't blame the product as I believe the fit is as intended, but it is very much like a cycling jersey. That is in order to get the appropriate chest/shoulder/arm fit, I need a size large. Unfortunately, the large clings to my gut like a scalded cat. Not attractive. I stepped up to the XL. Gut problem solved, but the arms are so long that the sleeves reach halfway down my palm. This could have been solved if MH would have put an elastic cuff on the sleeve or even thumb holes as they did on the hooded version. Regardless, it's a great piece of equipment and the best solution is for me to drop a few lbs and go with the large. It does a super job blocking the wind (windstopper, duh) and is very very light. It will be terrific for cool weather cycling and COLD weather running. Until the thermometer drops, it makes a great lounge jacket. Very comfy!!!
Ive had this jacket for awhile and i purchased it for several reasons including its lightweight and wind stopping ability. I love the jacket and it is my staple item when i run and bike- have not really used it backpacking yet. my only complaint is that it gets super hot really fast if you use it in weather above 35ish degrees. nice and stylish and LOVE the thumb loops.
To call this a shirt is a disservice. It breathes like a soccer jersey, but blocks wind like a thin soft-shell (and it even has some water resistance). Although you might look like you belong on a bike or Mars, use it as a first base layer and you'll save yourself a lot of weight and bulk by eliminating many others. Combine this with a thin vest under a shell (if the weather is really nasty) or a light fleece (if it's just cold) and you're good to go.
A medium fits a wide range (fits me perfect at 5'11 and 185), but the sleeves do run long. Long collar also helps keep out wind up top. Bonus pocket on the right side makes it easy to take keys or some cash while you're out getting your workout.
Its amazing how warm and comfortable this thing keeps you. This thing is all I need to stay warm while climbing on sunny December days or backpacking on damp and chilly spring days. I even sleep in it if I'm winter camping. Great shirt, super versatile.
This is my new 'goto' wind layer for alpine and trad accents. (I also like the Arc'teryx Accelero pullover though) It is super light, for a softshell, and offers much better durability and breathability than traditional wind shirts.
Like most MH tops it runs pretty snug to say the least. I'm 5'7, 135, with a typical climber build and would have a hard time with the small if it were any smaller; in the torso anyway. The sleeves are a little long, but not unbearable; I have a dead even monkey index and the sleeves come right to my wrists when my arms are fully extended.
The zip could be a little deeper for better ventilation and easier entry/exit, but it is really not bad.
The one pocket is reasonably sized for small items. This is a light piece and is not meant for cargo toting, so I have no problem here (the pocket is substantially larger than the pocket in the Arc'teryx Accelero).
I am 5'9" and 140 lbs, 30" waist and a 31" inseam, a narrow frame. The medium size fits me; the sleeves land about an inch and a half below the crease of my wrist and there is ample room in the shoulders and arms. I've used this as a semi base layer, putting on a tank top underneath and I've also used this as a midlayer since I can fit a thinner long sleeve base layer underneath the Mntn Hardware shirt. The quality is excellent and it's proven to be windproof on beach jogging ventures, snowboarding in 10 degree F weather, and while traveling on a motorcycle. The material has a somewhat metallic sheen to it (in blue anyway), inviting sarcasm about which planet I'll be traveling to but it doesn't deter me from saying this is one of the best performance tops I own.
The transition Zip T is thee best piece of running and cross country ski gear I own. From Oct - April I wear this everyday for workouts, wears like iron ! (Going on four years same pieces..) I am 5'11 165lbs and wear size large, I have two one fits me a little tighter than the other .. If you live or play in cold and windy climates. Get this piece you will not regret it..
I received one of these as a birthday present. I doubt that I would have purchased myself due to the cost - but I would now. The Transition is a gem in all ways - construction, materials and performance. I use it for cold weather running, and it is perfect. The fit is indeed snug in the gut area, but has lots of shoulder room - it doesn't pinch my pits. It has the uncanny ability to be comfortable in wide range of temps and conditions. I have used it alone on bare skin, layered over both Patagonia capilene 1 and 3, and as a base layer under an insulated top. It goes well with all. Bite the bullet and get one if your mom or wife will let you.
