Mountain Hardwear Terra Jacket - Men's

The ultralight, super-functional Mountain Hardwear Men’s Terra Jacket has become a top pick for world renowned alpinists like Kevin Mahoney for a good reason. Despite waterproof breathable Conduit fabric and fully taped seams, the Terra Jacket weighs only 17 ounces. Mountain Hardwear gave this shell a tailored cut that fits well over layers and under your climbing harness while still allowing a full range of motion.

Bottom Line: Fast and light in the mountains.

I'm going to be working on a construction site in Siberian China and need a jacket that can be durable enough to withstand a few snags yet packable enough to fit in my carry-on. I have an old MH jacket that the conduit feels almost like a canvas. is this like that? or what else do you recommend?

Timbo. This Terra Shell is extremely lightweight and durable. But, one area where ProShell out performs this particular Conduit face fabric is in durability. If I were going to work in Siberia and needed a durable shell... I would look towards Proshell Gore. Proshell is typically made with a 40 D shell. The Terra Shell is made with a 20 D shell. Higher the number typically the more durable. The Beryllium Jacket is one of Mountain Hardwear's top of the line ProShells. The other jacket to consider would be the Amalgam Jacket from Hardwear as well. It is made with a 70 D face fabric coupled with Paclite from Gore which is extremely breathable. This 70 D fabric wears like iron. Hope this info helps!

Welded!

By: Backcountry.com Vendor Rep
September 26, 2008

To add to the above copy:

This jacket is actually welded together using a proprietary welding technology from Mountain Hardwear called "Z-Weld." This technique of welding does not require seam tape to be fully waterproof and this is the coolest thing about it. You see, tape doesn't breathe due to adhesive... so, with no tape you get more breathable surface area in the jacket as a whole. You think it couldn't add that much... but it does! I will also say this - independent testing has shown this Conduit Fabric to be some of the most breathable fabric we have ever worked with. This increased breathability is due to the combo of fabrics and the laminate as a whole. It is an amazing piece and a testament to what we can do. Yes, I work for Mountain Hardwear!:) I hope this info helps!

I notice this jacket is made with conduit fabric, is this the same fabric and feel as the Synchro? Also is this similar fit to the synchro, or would it fit more like the Dragon? I have a large in both and the Synchro fits well but the dragon seems too large especially in the arm length. I am about 6ft 175 lb and would layer for skiing and such.

eez. The Conduit fabric used in the Synchro Jacket is Conduit Softshell fabric. The Conduit fabric used in the Terra Shell... is Conduit Terra Shell fabric which is the most breathable hard shell fabric we have ever come up with. 'Conduit' simply refers to our proprietary waterproof and breathable laminate that we use in many of our fabrics from outer shells to tents to sleeping bags. So, laminate the same... face fabric different. In addition, this Terra Shell fabric actually out performed Pro Shell Gore fabrics in breathability tests and is absolutely amazing. The days of Gore being the most breathable laminate are over. This jacket will fit more like a Dragon and less like a Synchro... tighter in the body like the Dragon with similar arm length. Hope this helps!

Versatile Jacket

By:
November 14, 2009

I was skeptical when this jacket showed up at my door. It seemed flimsy to me. Man, was I wrong! This is one of my new go-to jackets for most situations. I absolutely love this beast! It is extremely comfortable and moves great with your body. The hood fit was one of the best that I have had in jackets, just as good as my Beta AR which cost nearly twice as much. The gaskets in the sleeves are great, i miss jackets with thumb holes, all jackets should have them! Overall, durability has been wonderful, water repelency is amazing and fit and comfort are wonderful. I love this coat and cant wait to take more trips to the Whites with this beast!

Another Photo of the Terra at work

July 3, 2009

Longs January climb 2009. Coming from Chicago, this was the first trip in which I would be testing the jacket out. It did get tested with only two complaints: The first is that it can tear easily (mine got caught on a pine branch the size of a pencil and the branch poked a hole right through it, was just walking along brushed up against the tree and bam instant hole. The second is the zipper, can be a pain to zip up with just liners on, most of the time I had to use my bare hands because it was finiky! Other than that great jacket!

This jacket will fit probably closer to the Quark than a Beryllium. If you are a medium in the Quark... I would get a medium in this jacket. Hope this helps!

Great with only two complaints

By:
July 3, 2009

As you can see from the pictures I use this jacket on winter climbs. It proved to be both water and wind resistant like stated. It fit me perfectly with my layers (6 ft, 155lbs and I went with a Medium). The jacket provided great mobility, breathability and wind resistance. The descriptions in the other posts are spot on the only two things I would like to add are as follows:
Careful when walking: I was trekking up the couloirs route towards Longs and just happened to brush against a pine tree (I think it was a pine, might have been a spruce) anyways one of the littlest, dinky little branches poked my left arm and tore right into the jacket. I understand this might not be the “jackets” fault, however I was a little disappointed in how easily this happened. I barely even felt the twig and wouldn’t have noticed the rip if the twig didn’t break off and stick into the hole. Just so were clear, this was a little twig, something you could break with two fingers no problem. So if you are going to be hard on your jacket you might want to look at something with a little higher Nylon rating like a 70D outer. I haven’t returned the jacket yet because I love it and am not sure if the tear would be covered under warranty or not. It is no bigger than the size of the top of a pencil eraser so we shall see if they will replace it or fix it.

The second issue I personally had was the main zipper. I don’t know if it is because I am Polish or not but I had the hardest time getting the zipper started and undone. I would always have to remove my liners and fidget with it to get the two sides to line up right and be able to pull the zipper up. Also when undoing the zipper it always got caught at the end and was a difficult to detach the two sides of the zipper. This could be user error or it could just be the style of the zipper to ensure no wind or water gets through. So take this complaint lightly!
Other than those two things the jacket is awesome. I have used it twice to golf in (mist to full out pouring) and it turned out to be a great golf jacket! New line for MH, MH Golf. If you have any more question feel free to ask and I will try to answer them the best that I can!

***Update****
Returned the jacket, rips to easly, any brush up against a tiwg will rip into the jacket. Mine had about an inch gash it it from getting caught in the underarm zipper. I even took my time unzipping to be sure not to tear the fabric, no luck. In my opion this jacket is good but could be great if they upped to a little higher nylon count.

Great jacket!

By:
October 24, 2009

Before this jacket, I had a North Face rain jacket....It was garbage. I havent been in the snow or ice with it yet, but for a rain jacket it worked fantastic. Rode my bike to class in the rain all day and was completely dry inside. Zippers are amazing the the welded seams are awesome. Im 6'4 180 pounds and the Large fits me perfect. Wouldnt have bought anything else...

How does the jacket do compared to the Gore-Tex Pro Shell? Is one more breathable than the other? I just want a super durable 3 layer shell, that will breath tremendously. I get hot pretty easily and will need the ability to cool down or breath.

Hi Matt,

I was talking to my Mountain Hardwear Rep a couple weeks ago about this jacket. According to him the Terra Jacket is actually MORE breathable than a Pro-Shell. Long term, the Pro Shell will be more waterproof though. Apparently the Terra fabric is the first proprietary waterproof/breathable that is more breathable than Gore-Tex. Hope that helps.

Was expecting more breathability...

By:
October 8, 2009

Initially I was a bit disappointed in the breathability of this jacket; however, after testing in very wet conditions, I'm pleased. In dry conditions, any aerobic activity has me reaching for the pitzips but in our first major rainstorm of the season here in CA and I took the Terra out for a jog. 30 minutes in a torrential downpour and I'm dry as a bone. Breathability was still an issue, but it is a hardshell so I guess that is to be expected. This thing does sheds water like a ducks back though. The only drawback I could see (besides breathability) was the hood. It was pretty loose and would flop off while jogging. It's designed for a helmet and has a drawcord, but I rarely use a helmet. Very light and great to throw in the pack, but really probably only good for the most extreme conditions and appropriate layering. If you're getting it for what it's designed for you'll love it. If you're looking for something for daily wear, get a softshell.

I have been searching for a soft shell type jacket that would be best suited for hiking/back packing in the North east. I would want core ventilation, front pockets, and to be decent in wet conditions. The Transition seems under kill but the Dragon or Terra might be overkill as these are designed more for climbing.Any suggestions??

The Terra Shell is more of a shell rather than a softshell. The Dragon is a softshell. The Dragon would be a great jacket for what you are looking for. It is a Windstopper Softshell and would provide you with lots of weather protection and has all of the features that you need. Hope this info helps.

Incredible Jacket!

By:
September 30, 2009

When I first received this jacket I was pretty skeptical on how it was going to perform, but boy was I wrong! This jacket is really tough. Completely waterproof, windproof and breathes better than any shell I owned. Good athletic fit. (might be snug for some with heavy layers....but works for the better if you got a pack on). If I plan on doing a lot of work to get to the top of a peak no matter the weather....this is my jacket of choice.

Depending on how you would like this jacket to fit... I would buy the same as your fleece. Large. This jacket has what we call our "alpine cut" which is by design a little more snug than other cuts that we use. We made it this way with climbing and or other like activities in mind. If you want it to fit a little more loose... then I would size up. As for sizing of Hardwear... we do the best we can to keep sizing consistent across the line. However, different things are designed for different activities and sometimes this effects sizing (see above) Hope this info helps!

Kick ass high tech jacket

By:

Thin fit, just enough room for a couple thermal layers under and a water bottle. I used this jacket on Aconcagua and loved it! Side pockets are positioned high to accommodate a harness. Internal water bottle pocket so it's less likely to freeze up. Hood with room for a helmet. Strong, durable, waterproof, super functional and looks cool too!

Although this jacket is thin, the Typhoon is as thin and not designed for mountaineering. If you wait until after February I will be taking mine to Longs Peak with a 45lb pack. I will let you know how it does.

I am trying to choose between this and the MH Xenon for an all

I am trying to choose between this and the MH Xenon for an all season shell. I'd use it for bike commuting, hiking and maybe mountain biking. What is the durability like compared to a paclite jackets like the Arc'teryx Alpha SL? Also, i usually wear an M in t-shirts, but i wear an L in the MH monkey man jacket. Would i want an L in the Terra jacket as well? What about the Xenon?

Concerning durability, I think the Terra Shell might suit you just fine. BUT, consider this - I own the Xenon and I chose it because I was looking for a jacket that was light (uses Paclite and only 19oz.), durable (70D Outer Shell!) and packed away small. I was looking for something specifically for long backpacking trips with a heavy pack, but that would be durable enough should I decide to use it for a ski trip, etc. as well as be good for all-around wear. The main difference between the Xenon and the Terra is gore paclite vs Conduit, respectively. I believe the Xenon would be much more durable than the Alpha SL because it uses a burlier shell with the paclite laminate. I can't say anything about the terra because I don't know about the durability of conduit vs. gore paclite, but I will say this... The terra is a 3-layer with 20D backing and 20D shell material. The xenon is 2-layer with 70D shell material. As far as size goes, I find that MH jackets all fit the same pretty much across the board (i.e. go for the large). Hope that helps
