Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Women's
The Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket wraps you in 650-fill down to keep you warm in the coldest possible conditions. Mountain Hardwear made the Sub Zero jacket with Conduit SL laminate that prevents moisture from sneaking in and breathes when you warm up. The detachable hood allows you to customize the jacket to the weather, and the fleece-lined collar and hand pockets add extra comfort when the wind starts to howl.
Wow. This sucker is warm! For the size (it compresses quite small) this thing really packs in the BTU's. There was a cold snap up in the Canadian Rockies while I was on my ice climbing trip. I couldn't manage sitting in a coffee shop with nothing to do but write reviews for another day- so I went for it. At minus 18 C, this thing is KEY apparel for the belays. Even following my fellow torture lover, I wore this jacket happily- and forgot my pain for a few brief moments . . . until I had to get back on the sharp end.
is there a plan for a Sub Zero SL hooded jacket that covers the butt? I'm 5' 4" 120# - the measurement scale indicates a medium is that the best fit? Often med. is too large.
Colleen. Check out the Woman's Downhill Parka. It is essentially the same jacket as above but with added ski features and added length. If the jacket is for you... with your measurements I would consider a small. Hope this helps!
I bought this jacket on a whim and thought it would be a great addition to my Kili gear. I am always cold. I am 5'4 and weigh around 120...I am small up top and have some junk in the trunk. I bought a small. All in all, it is a pretty good fit. I was able to layer it with 3 tops underneath including the Montbell exceloft and wore my gore-tex shell over it. It fits a bit snug around the bottom when I have multiple layers on. I love the hood, it's a must. We hiked in a blizzard and the wind was fierce...I was warm but was never able to escape the chill. I am not convinced that it is the warmest thing out there, but like I said, I am always cold.
Is this completely windproof? How water resistant is it? Does it shed snow better than rain? How durable is this, is it prone to rip if snagged or caught. My wife's biggest pet peeve, does the velcro get caught or stick to the fabric (she's had that problem w/ other jackets). The last question will be the deal breaker for her.
jsung. The jacket is completely windproof and highly weather resistant. It is made utilizing Conduit SL fabric which is waterproof. But, due to the construction of the jacket (no tape) we call it highly weather resistant. So, with that in mind... it does shed snow better than rain. Also consider, if it is raining... it may be to warm for a down coat. The jacket is made with a combo of rip-stop nylon and more durable taslan and is no more or less prone to ripping or snagging than any other down coat out there. The velcro does not, in my experience, get caught or stick to the fabric. Hope this info helps!
I was told by a customer service rep that this was the WARMEST jacket they had. They were right! The quality is excellent and even the collar inside the hood is thick down. It is a beautiful jacket, appropriate for our frozen Wisconsin winters. The only problem was the color made me look like a total corpse and for the cost of the item I had to love it. I like colorful outer wear and already have a boring navy coat. I returned it but only out of my own sense of style. If you want the warmest coat-EVER, they this one is for you!
I loved this jacket (so warm) until it ripped after 3 months. I don't know how or why because I basically walk to and from work in it and that's it. I called Mountain Hardwear about it and they said they'd fix it for $90 plus S&H. I was appalled by this but then the guy on the phone was a total jerk. I called to complain about the jerk and the assistant manager and the manager basically called me a liar! Nobody from customer service was helpful in any way. I will never buy Mountain Hardwear again. My boyfriend has a similar Patagonia jacket and he loves it (and if there's a problem they fix it or replace it free)! Stay away from Mountain Hardwear unless you are willing to be belittled by the "customer service".
Light weight, warm, and water proof in mist, drizzle, and wet snow. You'll want a waterproof taped seam shell in a downpour -- which is pretty much how this jacket is advertised. Interior pocket can hold a 1 liter bottle or 2-liter bladder, though there's no easy way to route a drinking tube. Fleece lining on the inside of the collar and pockets is a luxury touch. Detachable hood and the water proofing are what make this jacket a step up from MSR's standard down parka. Wish it came in more colors. Had to settle for black. Women's small fits a 5'2", 125 lb petite woman perfectly.
What is warmer, the North Face Tahoe Down Hooded jacket or the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket? I live in a cold climate. This is not for use in mountaineering, but I do spend a lot of time outdoors and in the backcountry. Thanks!
Linda. It is very hard to say which jacket will be 'warmer' as every person has a different metabolism. I would imagine that the down fill in each jacket is similar in amount therefore making the warmth gained from the insulation similar. The TNF jacket weighs 545g and the Sub Zero SL weighs 745g so it could be said that the Sub Zero has more down insulation but I don't know that for sure. The difference in weight more than likely comes from the fact that the Sub Zero SL is made utilizing the Conduit Laminate from Hardwear which is our waterproof and breathable laminate. The Sub Zero SL is not a waterproof jacket due to construction (not taped) but it will provide superior weather protection to snow and light rain when compared to the TNF jacket. Also, the Sub Zero SL is baffled like a sleeping bag (no cold spots)... not sure about the TNF jacket. Hope this info helps!
Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket(Women's) is a solid quality down jacket. Living in Norway is cold in the winter, and this excellent jacket keeps me warm both when I´m out in the woods as well as walking in the city. The shape is perfectly made for girls.
I'm very small- 5' and 100lbs. I've tried on some patagonia stuff and their XSs are still big... would the measurments on this work for someone so petite?
amy. I am not sure of your measurments but the best way to see if the xs will fit is to go to our sizing chart located on this product page on our website: http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Product.aspx?top=1828&prod=958&cat=1879&viewAll=False (hint: cut and paste into your browser), click on the sizing chart PDF and go from there. Also, if you are constantly finding things to big for you... check out the measurments on our youth sizing as well. I know a few women who buy youth product regularly for better fit. Hope this info helps!
This is a fantastic buy. I love everything about it. Winter hasn't really settled in yet, but I can already tell how warm this jacket will be. VERY COMFY. True that it does run pretty big. I am 5'4" 150 and a medium was plenty big. I normally buy larges.
Hey there! I'm about 5'11" and 140lbs, and I was wondering what size you think I might want to get in this jacket- I'm normally a small in the torso (and size 4-6 in pants) but I'm worried about sleeve length, as that is a problem I often find with Mountain Hardware/most outdoor gear! Thanks so much!
Tall and skinny... well, in order to fit your arms you may have to go with a jacket that is a little larger in the body. So, I would say @ 5'11" you would probably be the most comfortable in a large! A medium might work as well but I think you would run into the sleeve length issue. Good luck!
Attention all men: This is the one that'll keep her warm enough to kick your butt on your yearly xmas trip to the backcountry.
She says: great fit, not too bulky, the hood actually keeps her ears nice and warm, her starbursts don't freeze in her pockets. It's windproof (haven't tested the waterproof yet, but will update when we get back from RMNP in Jan) packs small and she even wears it to work.
i love this coat overall. its very warm, the internal pockets are great, and so is the zip off hood. complaints include lack of butt coverage and it could be tailored more for women (it tapers in at the hips - sort of boxy) still - its one of the few I've found that don't make my petite frame look like a house.
I'm 5'6" 135 and was wondering which size would be best. I plan on using the jacket as a piece of gear rather than just as a town jacket. It seems like the small fits well, I found the sleeves and torso to be longer than any other down jackets I've owned or tried, but the neck is a little small. Has anyone close to my size tried the small or med??
5'7 and 135 - medium is perfect. Any smaller and it would creep up your back and let in the cold. Neck fit just fine and bottom hem cinches on both sides. Too tight and the jacket won't be as warm.
Stick with the small, unless the neck tightness is cutting into your skin and restricting movement and/or blood flow.....you kinda want a nice comfortably-tight seal around your neck to keep that cozy warmness inside the jacket!
Lucked out and got it for $59 on clearance...couldn't pass it up...great jacket, I'm 5'6" 135 and the small fit but a little tight w/ layers, got the Med and its perfect. They must have added length to the torso and sleeves b/c this jkt has the best length I've seen for both. Great hood coverage even with a helmet and reverse zip for belays! Too bad it doesn't come in 800 fill and w/o extra linings to keep it lighter. Still a good buy if you can get it around $100 or less.
it depends on what you are wearing underneath it and how hard you are exerting yourself, but this jacket has been on top of some of the tallest, coldest peaks in the world. Layer properly and put the hood up, and you should be able to handle -30 F for a short while. Should take care of all but the coldest of winter days in the lower 48.
I love my Mountain Hardware Sub Zero jacket. On my way up Kilimanjaro I used it every evening above 3500meters. And on summit night it kept me nice and warm in -10 degrees Celsius. On "normal" cold days back home (between -5 and 5 deg C) its almost too hot! Gotta love it!
I'm 5'6 120, normally wear a small, but I'm looking for something heavy duty and accepting of layers for kili, possibly denali someday. Would you recommend a size up to medium?
This jacket is the best jacket I have ever owned however, having little problem with the zipper. This is the second one I have purchased the first one was a mans and that zipper is tough sometimes to. I really love this jacket it is awwwwsome!!!!
The SL laminate in this jacket is great in that it protects the down from melting snow and light precipitation, and helps windproof the fabric. It is a little heavier because of it, but it makes it that much better as an outer layer. Hope that helps!
There is only a SubZero SL Hooded Jacket. There is also a SubZero Jacket but it is not hooded. SL stands for 'Storm Light'... and references the fact that we use a Conduit laminate in the shell fabric of the jacket. This makes the jacket extremely weather resistant and aids in warmth as a result. Hope this helps!
I live in Chicago and wanted a jacket that wouldn't make me shiver in the winter conditions here. I found it! I am 5'6'' and the ladies medium fits perfectly! It's got a great hood that's detachable and keeps my entire face warm and covered! Easily the best winter jacket I have ever owned!
I just purchased a Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL and I'm not sure if it's the right size. How are these things supposed to fit? Is there anything I can look at in the way this jacket fits to indicate if it is the right fit?
This jacket is cut to fit over all your other layers. You can size it down probably one size safely, if you are really after a trimmer fit, but this is a down jacket after all and it is still going to be pretty puffy. The original idea behind jackets like this is that you throw them on over your mountaineering outerwear when you slow down or stop moving to make camp, so they are made to fit over everything else you would be wearing. The only thing you positively wouldn't want is for it to fit too tightly. You would be squeezing the air out of the down at that point and the jacket won't keep you as warm. Hope that helps.
Not really. If you like the way it fits, then it fits. If it's way too sloppy or too long or the sleeves are too long, then it's too big. If you like it baggy it should be baggy. It's totally subjective, depending on how you want it to fit.
I loved this jacket from the moment I opened up the box. It's going to be great for those long storm days sitting on the lift when everyone else has called it quits. I ended up with the medium. I ordered both. The small fit me (I'm 5'6 size 5, but very busty on top), but the medium is what I picked for any layering I might do. I don't mind the extra room. Can't wait to try it out. Now we just need some SNOW!!
This is the shorter version, the jacket, and it goes to just below the waist. The Sub-zero SL parka is hip length or just slightly longer. Hope that helps.
Center back length on size medium is 27". As you go up or down in size, you will add/subtract an inch for each measurement. The length of this coat will most likely cover the hips.
I live in Hawaii and have family on the mainland. Every year around the winter holidays I leave 80 degrees of paradise for about 3 weeks. That 3 weeks has always been a time of freezing my buns off. But freeze no more with the sub zero SL hooded jacket. It truly became my paradise away from paradise, a little warm retreat in the snow covered mountains and also running errands in town. I LOVE this jacket and recommend it to anyone needing a packable summit jacket or just a dependable winter jacket. I'll never leave the islands again without it!
I'm 5'10" and about 160 lbs; I figure medium will fit, but am wondering how much room that leaves for any layering? Also, I probably have just missed it, but what's the weight on it? Does it pack down well?
I have a Sub Zero from about 5 yrs ago. I am 5'6" 140, with a larger chest size and it fits great, EXCEPT the arms are too short and it drives me insane! :) HTH!
I love this coat...I can just throw it on and know I'll stay warm and dry. The hood is a must. It's very puffy, but I don't mind...a small trade-off to stay warm. Very comfortable and light. I've worn it in sleeting rain/snow and stayed dry and warm. If you're looking for a parka-type coat, this one is great. Waist length. I'm 5'2" 125 lbs and bought a small. Can wear over a light jacket and still have enough room to move around.
Hi I'm looking for a down jacket for a trekking trip to Nepal, for wearing in the tea houses at night. Does this jacket pack down small for carrying in a rucksack?
The men's medium packs to a cylinder about a foot long by 6 inches wide, so the women's ones are probably a little smaller. That's without compression either.
After reading the reviews, I decided to purchase a small in black and it fits perfectly! I'm 5'2" and 125 lbs. Looks and feels great! It is puffy, but I don't mind. Just got it today so haven't tested it in the cold...based on reviews, I think I'll be warm enough.
My wife said that this is the best down jacket that she has ever owned. She is about 5'1" and is wearing the small size. She is able to layer under it some.
Fantastically! I bought mine when I moved to interior Alaska and I've tested it down to -48F. Put it with some good down pants and huge mittens.. hat and face mask and you are set!
You might need a thin layer underneath, but it'll do pretty damn well. If you'll be standing around and not moving in that kind of cold, I would suggest upgrading to the Absolute Zero.
This parka is awesome. It has great features (inside water bottle pocket, fleece-lined hand pockets), and is really warm. It kept me dry and warm in really cold weather climbing, and kept out the wind. The Subzero is a relatively inexpensive (compared to other brands) down parka. Buy it -- you won't be disappointed.
My wife loves the Sub Zero. In 20 degree temps it feels like you're wearing a heater. Not tested in temps lower than the 20's. Fits into a stuff sack smaller than a loaf of bread. Highly recommended.
the tag reads:"MACHINE WASH COLD GENTLE, TUMBLE DRY LOW, REMOVE PROMPTLY, DO NOT IRON, DO NOT USE FABRIC SOFTENER, DO NOT BLEACH, DO NOT DRYCLEAN"-----------------------The "Care and Feeding" instructions can also be found on the Mountain Hardwear website. Here they are:WashingProfessional Cleaning: Your down garment can be professionally washed, but should never by dry cleaned, because the chemicals used are harmful to the fabrics and filling and will severely reduce loft and thermal efficiency. Check the yellow pages under Camping, Backpacking, or Mountaineering Equipment for folks who specialize in cleaning outdoor products. Your local retailer may also be able to refer you. Be sure to ask if they specifically wash down clothing.Machine Wash: Zip up all the zippers, attach all Velcro® and turn your garment inside out. Wash in a front-loading machine only, using cold water on a gentle setting. Use a minimum amount of a mild powder soap or special down soap (available at outdoor stores). Use at least two rinse cycles to get all the soap out of the garment.DryingWhen moving your garment from the washer to the dryer, do so carefully by carrying it from the bottom. Tumble dry in a large commercial dryer on low heat. The dryer must be large enough for the garment to flop freely around. Drying could take several hours and your garment should be checked often to make sure it is not overheated. As it dries, look for clumps of wet down and gently shake to redistribute the down.No-nos * Do not use a top-loading washing machine (the agitator will destroy the channels). * Do not use liquid soap or detergent. Do not use strong soap or detergent. * Do not use your home dryer (they have been known to melt holes in the fabric). * Do not lift your garment from one end when wet (lift the entire thing all at once from underneath). * Do not dry in the sun (the UV will damage the nylon).Hope this helps!
I love this jacket. It's comfortable and looks good too, until you put the hood all the way up and close the front flap. But then you don't care because you're a toasty mummy!
The MHardwear Hooded Compressor Jacket will allow for more mobility because it is a lot less puffy/bulky, but it isn't quite as warm, ultimately. It is always a trade-off, because more trapped air s warmer but also bulkier. The Compressor jacket is excellent, and definitely worth checking out if you are shopping for jackets of this type. That said, the Sub-zero SL here is a classic, and it has quite a few 6000+ meter peaks under its belt, so it is definitely possible to get things done with it on!
This jacket is great!! The weather is -18 degrees outside and you wouldn't even realize that it was that cold. The hood when put on keeps you nice and toasty, it does shut out the noise. Super great jacket!!
I'm 5'4'' and 125 lbs. I wear a small sometimes but usually a medium due to broad shoulders and wide waist. what size should I get: a small or a medium?
I get *really* cold really easily. This jacket worked wonders. I thought it was too warm for skiing (though with fewer underlayers, it actually worked out ok). When just hanging out, the jacket keeps you at a perfect temp. XS fit well (I am 5'0", 100lbs) and it is not nearly as bulky as other brands. Downsides: hard to start the zipper; and the hook and loop closure at the top closure bothers my chin (though cutting it down with scissors seemed to help).
How is this coat any different from the Mointain Hardware Sub Zero Down Parka Women's? They both seem to have 650-down fill,a hood, and are water-resitant. The only difference it seems to me is that this one is more expensive?
The SL has got a laminate on the inside of the fabric (not waterproof, but very water resistant and windproof) and all the reinforcements as mentioned. It is also a bit shorter than the Parka for better harness compatibility. The parka is less heavy duty with better coverage for more comfort in day-to-day, more civilized, winter life. Hope that helps!
The other one says it's water resistant, but really the Conduit SL on this jacket is a fair bit more so. This one will be a bit warmer too, less casual. The Conduit SL is waterproof and windproof, the regular is only water/wind resistant. SL has reinforced shoulders, elbows, and sleeves that resist abrasion from ropes, ice, trees/branches. This is a highly technical jacket for mountaineering, the regular is a top of the line around towner.
Awesome. I love this jacket. I keeps me warm or hot, it as if the down can read my mind. It was a bit pricey but, totally worth it. I think it is my favorite piece of gear right now. My fav part about it is the zipper actually, it NEVER gets jammed, really smooth.
Does the shock cord at the bottom pull on both sides, or just one one side? I'm 5'5'' 130 lbs, and have somewhat longer arms than most people. How is the arm length on this? Would a medium work?
Great coat; VERY warm; well-constructed. I bought it to work in the Arctic, but it does fit on the large side. I'm a medium-build and usually wear a small or a medium (women's). I called before ordering and was advised that this fits on the large side, but the small was still too big. I think that the sleeves would be too short on the XS.
Actually it has both, one at the bottom for cold air and one at the waist to make it fit tighter and not flop around. The waist one is very useful for keeping it out of the way of a waist strap.
Deliciously warm, easy to ski with, on the coldest mountain in Quebec-Tremblant. The color, Tiger, attracted everyone's attention. I now have three Sub Zer0 SL Hooded Jackets!!
the hood zips off. I just bought this jacket. It's great. It is definitely detachable (zipper) below the collar line. There is a flap between the collar and the hood zipper to prevent drafts coming through the zipper and under the hood up to your head.
This jacket made me sweat from the moment I put it on! It is incredibly cozy. My only complaint is the sizing. I am 5 foot 4 and 108 pounds and the size small was HUGE on me. If you are petite, be sure to go with the extra small!
I'm looking to get a down jacket for my gf for xmas. I've had problems with hooded jackets that fit uncomfortably if you have them zipped up all the way but do not have the hood over your head. Can anyone comment on whether this jacket has this problem or not? Also, if the hood is removed, does the jacket look just the the hoodless sub zero? Thanks.
This jacket definitely does not have this problem. And the hood's not removable, so that question is moot.-----------------------------Sorry Angus... the hood IS removable on this jacket. And it does not look like the normal Sub Zero because the normal Sub Zero is color blocked on the shell and the Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket is completely one color. The SL Sub Zero I bought has a zip off hoodThe SL Sub Zero definitely has a zip off removable hood.
I got the Tiger color jacket. Great color. It looks just like the color on a striped tiger. I got a size Large .( I am 5ft 5 in. tall and around 160 lbs ). The major gripe is what a few others have mentioned, and that is the coat needs to be a tad bit longer .It just barely covers the rearend. The warmth factor is wonderfull. I have worn it in 20 degree windy winter days since I have gotten the coat. . If you have short sleeves on under the coat , the sleeves of the coat get alittle cold inside against your skin but the rest of the coat is toasty. when I wear one layer underneath including long sleeves , the coat is perfect. The hood of the jacket is oh so warm also. The wrist / hand elastic openings could have been alittle bit wider to give more room for the wrist part of the gloves to fit in but oh well. The zipper is easy to start and runs very smooth. all in all the coat is a smash!! do not know how it will do when washed but special instructions came with it. I read another site about the washing and it said to use powder soap and a front loading washer. No agitator.
this is a great jacket. it keeps me toasty warm on winter camping trips. it's long in length...so it covers your back when you bend over. the sleeves are fine for me at 5'6" and 120 lbs. i'd say the small runs a little large. but i like the fit for layering. the detachable hood is also a nice feature. i have also washed this jacket in the machine, and it came out just fine after a tumble dry with no heat.
This is my first down jacket. I read a lot of reviews before deciding to buy this jacket. Expensive but worth the money. Very, very warm and comfy. I wore it when I was in the Himalayas... Slept with it on, wore it whenever I wasnt moving. I was grateful to have it! It is reasonably light and small, so it doesn't take up too much space/weight in a pack.
I bought the jacket in the small, true blue color, and I love it! I have worn this jacket in -10 to -18 weather walking and x-country skiing. I am usually always cold but in this jacket I stay toasty warm and the fit is fantastic! The jacket is puffy but I have full range of motion for all of my favorite winter activities and it is extremely comfortable.
I'm 5.10 with long arms- I got a medium and the sleeves are long enough. You however are a bit taller than me- the W's L (33 inches)might fit you- otherwize, the men's M is one inch longer in the arms at 34 inches.
Good stuff, although slightly different from the picture (jacket received has the MH logo on the left breast and "Conduit SL" sewn acrossed right wrist rather than vertically up the outer forearm). Even so, very warm jacket at a great price!! I'm 5'8" and weigh around 190 so I went with the XL to allow for layering-- maybe could have gotten away with a Large, but I didn't want to risk it being too snug when I wear my beloved hooded sweatshirts.
I am bummed! I read all these awesome reviews about the fit and everything and I got mine and it is 1. too big (I'm 5'5' and 135lbs and got a Med.) and 2. it is not flattering at all! It is huge, puffy, shiny black (I thought it would be matte) and makes me look huge. Bummmed out in Minnesota. Maybe a small would look better, but I'm not entirely convinced.... :-(
I love this jacket, but can't find one that fits just right. It's super warm, very lofty, and comfortable. I typically wear a size 10 on top, and the small was pretty roomy considering. I tried the XS and it fit well in the body, but was too short in the sleeves and a bit short in the torso. All in all, this jacket is tough and ideal for low temps, but not very flattering if that's your main concern.
