Mountain Hardwear Phantom Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down

Mountain Hardwear's new Phantom 0 sleeping bag features the new alpine mummy cut in a Superlight down bag. At 2lbs 10oz (regular), the Phantom 0 weighs about a pound less than other 0F bags. 800-fill down provides excellent insulation, even as temperatures creep into the single digits, while Mountain Hardwear's alpine mummy cut brings insulation closer to your body, without uncomfortable restriction. An ergonomic draft collar and down-filled face gasket keep your warmth inside the bag. The Phantom 0 has reduced volume around the head, and room has been added at the elbows and hips for a more comfortable night's sleep.

Bottom Line: Pass out in the Phantom 0, then wake up warm and ready for the foot of pow that fell overnight.

Love It

i hate sleeping bags. well that is until i bought the phantom 0. i am 5'10" and the regular size fits me fine. it's amazingly light at 2lbs 10oz, a whole pound less than most 0 degree bags. 800 fill keeps me toasty. it's also easy to regulate your temperature too with the draft collar and zippers that go in each direction. i also love the mummy style as i can bury myself in it and stay super warm when it's super cold out.

Phantom O=Great Winter Bag

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete

Warm and really light weight. I used this for a quick and light overnight last fall while skiing in patagonia. I fell in love with it during out first night together. I'm 6'2" and there was plenty of room in the Long to stash boot liners in the bottom and a few layers I wanted to keep warm and some gear i needed to dry out through the night. The neck baffling is really cozy and allows you to keep your face warm without breathing into your bag which makes your bag damp. There are few pieces of gear I find that couldn't use some improvement, but I really can't find any issues with this bag.

Yep, the fabric itself (15D nylon) is water resistant/shedding with an additional DWR finish.

Good bag, not for me

By:

Great warmth and weight, had trouble with the "performance mummy cut" fit. I am 6'6" and while the bag contained me just barely length-wise, I had trouble getting the thing fully zipped up while i was in it. Also I was a little restricted inside with the hood all the way on.

Used it twice up in the Sierras on 20 degree nights at 12,000' and was never cold. Woke up with the bag covered in moisture but it never penetrated. Difficult to unzip and get out of (especially when you wake up in the middle of the night sweating profusely struggling to vent it) when its fully zipped up with you inside.

Ended up exchanging it (thanks Backcountry!) for the MH Banshee 0 Degree because of the wider cut and full length zipper. Hard decision, especially to give up that extra pound of weight for the Banshee, but I think I'll be more comfortable in the long run. Also looking forward to testing out the Conduit shell on the Banshee.

For a smaller person than myself I highly recommend this bag especially for its ultralight weight and packability.

Super Warm

By:
November 12, 2008

This bag is sweet. Obviously the 800-fill down is super warm. I would recomend getting the Long size. I am 5'9" and weight 185 lbs with broad shoulders and the Reg. size bag was just way too snug. Luckily a gear expert, who was familiar with this bag, helped me and recomended that I try the Long. The switch to the Long bag was perfect, offering more girth and length to provide better coverage and comfort. The draft collar is great. Super Toasty!

Well, the user height maximums are [Small] 5ft 6in, [Reg] 6ft, [Lng] 6ft 6in, so that should help.

great bag

By:
February 2, 2009

i took this with me for the first time last weekend for a night of snow camping. i'm not sure of the temperature, but we are guessing that during the night it got down in the teens. normally, i'm the person that freezes to death. with the bag i was using before, i had to supplement it with a fleece bag on the outside, then a summer bag, then the main bag, then a liner, then fleece pj's, and a hot water bottle. needless to say, it was rediculous. so for this winter, i bought the phantome 0 degree and guess what? i only used the bag and a liner while wearing long johns. i also very much like that it compresses down pretty small and weighs less than 3 lbs.

Super warm, super light

By:

If you hate winter camping for the reason of being cold at nights, this sleeping bag will take care of that problem... I stay so warm in this bag that I have had nights where I am pulling myself halfway in and out to regulate my temp, but the bag works like a dream when it nears 0 degrees out, and even a few below the said rating. Another one of my favorite things is the weight of this bag for the warmth it gives. The fill quality of down is great, and it compresses down nicely in a pack, then lofts quickly after you lay it out. Its also decently cheaper than other similarly rated bags, at no sacrifice to the build and material quality. The MH phantom sleeping bag line is the best!

Home away from home

By:
April 10, 2009

The first backcountry (non car camping) experience of my life was 12F conditions on a ski tour. I was very glad to have this sleeping bag. No need for any additional clothing. Only fault is you need to get out of it in the morning.

Phantom 0 down bag.

By:
February 9, 2006

I have used that bag twice since I received it last month. On both nights the temp dropped to around 5-10 degree F. Inside the bag it was warm and toasty. The bag has a good amount of internal space to move around a little but it will also tighten up almost completely over your face to keep out the cold. It stuffs well for a 0 degree bag and it as very light. The only draw back it not wanting to get out of it in the morning when it is freezing out.
