Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's
The Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket offers fuzzy, plush warmth to backcountry-exploring male primates. This jacket’s high-loft Polartec ThermalPro Monkey Phur not only feels fabulously soft, it compresses for easy packing, insulates you from the cold, and sheds light precip. The Monkey Man’s versatility and breathability prompted alpine climber Ed Viesturs to bring a Monkey Man Jacket on his recent Annapurna trip.
I can't believe the Monkey Man Jacket hasn't been reviewed and praised by thousands of other people! It is an excellent all purpose fleece jacket with two nice big side pockets, a breast pocket, nice high collar and trim fitting cuffs.
It has a million uses, including everything from being just an everyday jacket to a piece of technical clothing for a layering system. It has an incredibly high thermal rating, which means that it keeps you very warm. This is excellent when you want it, but it also means that you will overheat if you wear it for any extended physical activity.
It works well for camping, belaying, boating or any other cold weather activity. Warm, well made, comfortable and available in a huge variety of colors. Hard to go wrong.
Yes! This year uses a very different fleece fabric. Last year the Monkey Man used MHW's proprietary Monkey Phur fleece. It's very soft, but mats like crazy. This year they've switched to a Polartec fabric that is much coarser (i.e. less soft) but will stand up to matting much better than last year's model. It's still warm, just not as "pettable" as the '08 model.
This is the most versatile jacket I own and I wear it for everything from casual about-town outings to rock climbing. According to Mountain Hardwear, the fleece in the Monkey Man is their best insulating material, and it is also one of the most affordable. No wonder this jacket is so popular!
But, chainsawing in a Monkey Man is not recommended as the wood chips get augered into the fabric and are impossible to remove, even after washing. It doesn't hurt the jacket, but gives it that special "backwoods" look whether you want it or not.
Have last years model. Love the jacket, lost somewhere when I moved need to see if I can track it down. With a shell it has kept more core comfortable down to -10F in Wyoming while shooting trap. On non windy days it makes a great stand alone jacket. I've felt this years model. Not quite a soft but I thought it was very close. My only complaint -they have probably fixed it with the new fabric - is that it has a tendency to come undone at the seems; usually on the shoulders. Since I could get them sewed up without issue this made getting mine very cheap, it can just be a bit annoying.
How do these fit compared to a TNF Denali? I wear a medium in the Denali and it fits well. I prefer a slimmer fit. 6' 185lbs, slight athletic build. I wear a 15 1/2 or 16 in most dress shirts.
Long live the Monkey Man! Still love this jacket. Nice all purpose fleece that makes you look like a monkey, who wouldn't? Truthfully though, it is not very practical for technical use. It's too bulky to layer, and the wind cuts right through it as an outer layer. I still wear mine though, because looking like a monkey is cool.
I've had a Monkey man jkt for years. It's still going strong despite regular abuse (it even handled fire juggling antics at Arapiles).
Don't know why they added hand pockets??!! The older model just had 1 breast pocket which was ample and it didn't bunch under my harness or add pressure points under my ruck sack waist belt.
I'd still recommend it for technical cut, warmth and versatility!
I've had the same jacket for years and have never been let down by it. Very warm and a great fit. I'm 5'10 and have a large after sending the medium back. A great investment.
Wow... Very pleased with this purchase.... Feels exactly as it looks and is light enough to the point where I almost dont even notice it on me.... As of right now it is keeping me almost perfectly warm at temps of 38-45 degrees with just a t-shirt underneath... I m 5'8 155 and I decided to go with the Large... On a scale of 1 to 10 on how it fits I would give it a 9.5 with the only flaw that it's a little lose around the waist but its perfect on the chest...
This is my first fleece jacket purchased and it would be pretty difficult to change my mind that this is the best out right now for lounging in or cold weather activites.
I got this jacket last year for Christmas, so I've been able to wear it under a lot of circumstances. There are two main features here:
1) This jacket is soooo warm. If you layer it with a shell you will be fine in any weather.
2) It is incredibly soft, great for just hanging around the house in; just make sure the heat is turned down haha.
Overall, its a great jacket. I had the Arc'teryx Delta SV Fleece before this, and I definitely prefer the Monkey Man. If I had to point out a flaw, I would say that the cut isn't as athletic as I'd like it to be.
I love this jacket! Amazingly soft, and warm enough for all but the coldest days. I've used it for skiing, biking, backpacking, kayaking, and a whole lot of other things. This thing is more bulkier, and therfore a lot warmer than most fleeces. I do not recomend sizing up, because it is bulky and the sleeves are quite long. At 5, 7 and 115 pounds a medium is a bit big, but I love it anyways!
