These pants are worth every cent. The material, nylon canvas, is as rugged as I hoped it would be. I've found my trail pants in the past to get torn up easily, but hiking through blackberry patches didn't pull a single thread out of these Matterhorns. The leg zips almost hit the knee, making it super easy to pull your muddy boots through without making a mess on inside of the pants when changing layers. It doesn't say so on Backcountry.com, but these pants also have a DWR finish on them. I wouldn't count on them as an alternative to rain pants in the North East, but the DWR was totally clutch when I spilled coffee all over myself one morning. The pants are lined with a chamois cloth in the hip area, which is killer when wearing a heavy pack. The zippers and snaps are all metal, too. I really can't find anything that I don't love about them. Don't think I'll need to buy new backpacking pants for a long time.

I am the author of the review titled "Fit Dilemma". I kept the large pair of the Matterhorns and returned the medium size. I then washed and put this oversize pair in the dryer on the highest heat setting my dryer has.
These pants lost more than an inch in length and about the same in the waist! It didn't help the short-waist problem, But I'd say they are a fit now. If you order these and their pretty much a fit right out of the box...... line dry them only.

Based on Medium Size. Inseam 31 inches. Inseam of shorts 11 inches. They fit normal not too large or too small. They keep out cold well even though they are not insulated. Comfortable at 45 degrees. They are great against the wind, I hiked with them on approaches in 30 mph wind and I didn’t feel it on my skin. I have had these for 6 months and used them in all kinds of conditions. The pants get warm at about 70 degrees during activities so I just zip off the legs and wear the shorts. They are easy to get off even with bulky boots, the calf zipper go almost to the knees. There is a button and an elastic band at the base of the leg. They are abrasive resistant; I scrapped them against granite while bouldering and they do fine. There are 4 front pockets, 2 on each side. There 2 are pockets like on jeans that open from the top that do not close and 2 that open from the side below those that close with a zipper. The 2 back pockets close with Velcro. There is a micro fleece waist band. One down side is; the belt loop in back is 1 long loop so it is not the easiest looping a belt while you are wearing them, however that design is specific for backpacking to reduce the friction points. They do well against stains. I accidentally got bike grease all over one knee and at the end of the day the grease was gone. I don’t understand where it went, but it was gone.

After buying one pair of the Matterhorns I immediately purchased all the colors in my size I could find they fit great and have tons of features plus there the most durable convertible pants I have ever worn

So I've only had these pants for a little while, but so far I can't seem to get over how soft and relatively light the fabric is, while seemingly being very durable. The fabric is kind of on the thicker end of nylon canvas (hence durable) so they might get hot in the summer, but then you got the option of going convertible - awesome. The sizing is a smidge big for me, the medium is a bit big but the small would be too tight in the waist and thighs (I'm blessed with tree trunk thick legs, but I'm pretty short at the same time); however, this isn't really MHW fault as much as my genes. I got them on major discount, because anything over $40/$50 is just ridiculous for nylon pants. The moondust color is like a light-medium grey. I'm an admittedly open MHW fanatic, but since they make afforable gear (in comparison with other brands), that's uber durable and uber dope I think it's warranted, but you might want to keep it in mind.

These pants are very durable. I like the fact that that the shorts are a bit longer and not something out of the 80's. Plenty of pocket space for my gadgets. I had to send the XL back for XXL. They were a bit snug where they didn't need to be. They need to make the XXL waist and the XL legs together and it would be perfect. Over all the pants are the best out there. Great gear at great prices!

Mountain Hardwear always does their homework to make sure their products have all the latest creature features that we want! I normally like their products due to their attention to detail, BUT the fit on these pants just doesn't work well for me. I'm 5-10, 169 lbs, 34.5 inch waist, Hips 39 inches, 30-31 inch inseam.

These pants seem to need to be worn very low on the hips for them to work for me.... I consider them low waist-ed (not too crazy about their "ride height"). The mediums were too tight in both the hip and waist, but the length was perfect. The large is about right in the hips, but too loose in the waist (both of these were the regular length). When I moved up to the large size the overall length became an issue. Because of the ankle cinch, I could get around this problem... however pulling up the ankles like this means that you'll have a lot of excess material flapping about (the short version would most likely cure this problem, but Altrec didn't list that as an option). What I need is a FAT medium cut! The three stars is only because of my fit problem.

Wonderful pants. Super durable, and well thought out. The pockets work great, and don't get in the way. Convertible pants are always good insurance for changing weather. Love em definitely recommend.

I am 5"7 175lbs and the large was just slightly too big. I would recommend anyone with a 34" waist to go with the medium.

I got this in the S size which should be close enough to fit my waist of 29. However it was way too lose and it felt like the pants was 31 or larger. I have the MH Canyon Pant and it fits me fine. I really like the features of this pant and would have kept it if the fit was right.

Bought 2 pairs - one for my son and one for me before a weeklong backpack trip... sturdy, plenty of pockets, and long enough to make a 13 yr. old happy.... zip-offs work great w/out having to take off boots...... very pleased....

I had bought same pant size XXL in Anchorage Alaska last year and order same size from backcountry. I am disappointed as the pant is tight and not as loss fitting as the same from store in Anchorage. Probable would not have purchased if I new size problem.

got need em get. I use mine while riding a motorcycle under my protective outer gear. the gusseted crouch really helps on long rides and the fact that if hot you can vent some (on the mc) by opening up the lower sides of the legs. and they seem able to shed some water (NOT a lot) but they dry very fast as well. worth the money as they can be washed by hand at night and dry enough in the morning, meaning that 2 pair should get you cross country in the US.
