Mountain Hardwear Dragon Softshell Jacket - Men's

Dry, cold conditions out on the ice or the ski hill require the full stretch and windblocking capabilities of the Mountain Hardwear Men’s Dragon Softshell Jacket. Mountain Hardwear used Gore WindStopper Softshell fabric for complete protection from frigid gusts, and the jacket’s welded seams will stop anything short of a total deluge. Welded pocket with watertight zips increase the weather seal and lighten the weight, while an internal MP3 player lets you get psyched on the approach hike. Elastic thumbhole cuffs ensure the sleeves won’t ride up when you reach for that next tool placement.

Bottom Line: This jacket spits hot fire.

blantonator. The Mountain Hardwear Dragon Jacket is made using a three layer Windstopper Softshell material and is Zwelded together. It will provide complete wind protection and is water resistant. It will keep the majority of weather off when skiing or climbing and has a phenomenal DWR. It is not a very thick fabric but in conjunction with insulating layers (fleece, synthetic, or down) it can work well down to the coldest of temperatures. I have had it out in -20 F weather with a Phantom Jacket underneath! Cheers!

Amazing Jacket

This jacket is awesome. Regulates your temperature very well and blocks the wind like no other. I use this primarily for climbing and stay warm in 30 degree weather with strong winds wearing only a mid layer underneith. Pitzips are great for dumping heat when you start to work up a sweat. I've tested the wind up to 120 mph on my motorcycle and it does not cut through. Truly amazing jacket.

These things are pretty form fitting. You can fit a light fleece or 2 underneath but not much else if you get your normal size.
Once you start hiking this jacket would keep you comfortable for much of the cooler weather you'll encounter.
You'll want a fleece or sweater to put on underneath for hanging out at camp though.

Amazingly versitile jacket

I love this Jacket! Its form fitting, wears great with a big pack, throw on some layers and snowboard all day! I ride my bike every morning here in New Jersey and even in the winter this jacket plus underarmor and im set down to 20 degrees no problemo. The huge pit zips are great halfway through to dump some excess heat. Only complaint is that the zips are well sealed so zipping them while on the bike can be an issue (two hand job), but a good trade-off knowing that when there zipped tight not an ounce of wind will get through. Ive been in some pretty nasty downpours and stayed dry (i just wouldn't want to be out all day without a better rain jacket. For the weight and versatility this is definitely one of my favorite weapons in my outdoor arsenal.

How does this differ from the spring 2009 version? The MHW webpage says this jacket is "new" even though it's been around for a year already.

Jon's right - overall fabric and design are very similar. Seems to be only asthetic changes. The picture on BC.com is of the 2008/2009 version. The new version has the Mountain Hardware logo on the left front pocket and nothing on the right side. The cuffs, upper left arm and rear collar also have a reflective MH logo.

Ian. There were minor detail updates (zipper pulls, velcro tab on the cuff etc.) to this jacket for fall. The shell fabric and overall design are unchanged.
