The waterproof breathable Mountain Hardwear Men's Downtown Coat defeats cold weather with 650-fill down insulation. The insulated hood holds warmth around your head, from where most of your body's heat would otherwise escape. Draw the Downtown Coat's hem cords and bomb that hill on your toboggan, or stuff this down jacket into your winter pack and bring it on your subzero ski tour. The sleek design prevents you from looking like a stuffed holiday goose, and the extended length lends you urban style.
Bottom Line: Downtown or downhill, this Mountain Hardwear coat seals out water and the chills.
Which size for me? L or XL? I am 5'11'', 195lbs. size 34 waist. Bulky, athletic type. I am just worried about the armpit size and sleeve length. And also, how long are the sleeves from shoulders?
I am almost the identical size but wear a 36 waist and I personal own both L and XL in mountain hardware and the L fits alot better, the XL is just to baggy.
My favorite thing about the jacket is that its very well stuffed with down and feels very plush, but it still appears to be very streamlined as the construction manages to hide the "bubbleness". The shell looks very durable and has nicely stitched seams. The cuffs and collar are made from a really comfortable cotton blend - great feature. The only thing that this jacket lacks is more pockets. The two main stash pockets are fleece lined and very large, but other than that there is a small chest exterior pocket and two tiny interior pockets which are useless.
The coat looks slim and nice. But the armpit is too tight. It is also impossible to add layers under the coat. I feel that It is not as warm as many reviews indicated. I want to keep it but after several tries, I have to return it due to unbearable tightness of armpit.
The coat is very nice fabric is good and would definitely but warm but it is sized a full size small. Very tight under armpits and around hips. Would be excellent coat for city use but go one size up if your going to wear anything but a t/shirt under it.
Great for the commuter...standing out at the train station or waiting for the bus...super warm...keeps the cold out and without the hood...it looks urban...no puffy jacket problems here...makes a big guy look big...not silly...
I'm wearing this coat here in Mpls right now. I used it with the air temps around -10F last week and -40F wind chill. At those temps my arms started to get cold first. I had to layer polartec underneath to stay warm. It's not a piece of "survival gear" but it is a decent piece of around town wear. A couple of complaints are there are not enough pockets and being that I am 6'2" I wish the coat was 2-3" longer in the body. The down hood, tight collar and cuffs are all well done by MHW. I wish they would have put even more down in the coat though. I suspect that to get the kind of coat I want I will have to pay at least $500. Anyway, for what it is---an urban, non puffy coat, it does the job.
Hi,Just wondering if anyone bought this jacket that is about 5'7 and around 190 lbs? I can fit in a med in TNF and also wondering if this fits the same? Thanks
I took the advice of the vast majority of the reviewers and went up one size on this coat. Frankly, I'm not sure what everyone was talking about when they said that this jacket runs a size small. I am 6'2" tall and weigh an athletic 195 lbs -- this puts me smack dab in the middle of every major outdoor clothing manufacturer's Large sizing.
I took the advice, though, and ordered an XL. The jacket was too big in the shoulder, chest and waist and the sleeves were ridiculously long. They have sold out of the Large in navy so I'll probably never know if the L fits better but I think that this jacket runs truer to size than previous reviews have indicated.
Aside from sizing, the jacket seemed great for the intended urban wear in 10-25 F degree weather. It was a bit bulkier than some of the reviews indicated but not overly so. I would buy this jacket again if I could find a Large in the right size.
really good length, keeps your butt warm, nice contoured fit which can be made snugger by draw cord inside, good warm hood too! only downside is media pocket which in my opinion was only made to fit slimmer and smaller sized mp3 players, i have to take my 80gb iPod out of its case and basically cram it into the pocket! otherwise a really nice warm stylish coat that has been standing up to some bitter new york winter.
My guy is 6'1' and SKINNY. He often has problems needing XL for the correct sleeve length, but L so it isn't too bulky. Are their any tall skinny men out there with this coat that can recommend what size worked for them??
I'm 6' 2" and 180 lbs. Don't know if that is "skinny" in your definition but I have the coat in XL and I wish it was 2 inches longer in the body. The sleeves are long enough and I have a 35" sleeve length.
I have had northface jackets in the past and never been completely warm until I bought this. I had never heard of Mountain Hardwear but this jacket is amazing. We just had a snow storm in Syracuse and it was about 20 or so degrees outside and I had this jacket on and was completely warm!! Best jacket I have had that still looks nice. It keeps you warm without looking like you are on a trans-Alaskan expedition.
It does not come in a "tall" size but it is a long coat that should fit a tall person just fine. Whether the man is wider or skinnier will help to decided whether to get a large or Xtralarge. Hope this helps.
You couldn't get cold in this coat if your life depended on it. The hood and wrist enclosures beat back the chill and refused to let any wind in. The only problem was the length. You could walk around Chicago on the coldest windiest day and laugh at the windchill factor. But if you wanted to walk up a hill the length of the coat keeps grabbing at your thighs. I went with the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Parka which is a little shorter. It is just as warm and it gives your legs the freedom they need to do some hiking. Be warned - MHW coats might be too warm for some people. I was in -12 degrees with the windchill and I had to start dropping the zipper after a 1/4 mile.
Love this coat! It's as warm as your favorite sleeping bag but without all the rolls of fluffy down. Conduit shell is great for light snow/rain (that's all I've encountered so far), but I'd bet it can handle much more. I'm 6'0, 160lbs and got the Large. Normally, I find the sleeves on most Larges to be a bit short, but if anything, these might even be a bit long. I've been walking around in NYC with this in 10-20 deg weather and haven't noticed the cold at all. One suggestion for improvement would be to make the inside of the collar a bit softer... after a day of urban mountaineering I had a pretty rough chin from it rubbing on the inside of the collar all day... but that's such a picky nit that I couldn't give less than 5 stars. Great jacket, great fit, nice style, warm as Hell, sheds snow/rain, and my Boo loves it... so again, mad props to MHW for another great piece of gear! Get yourself one and go attack some singletrack sidewalk!
Yes, it zips off. However, it's not flimsy like some other detachable hoods and has a laminated brim (keeps precipitation from running onto your face) & a drawcord to adjust how tightly the hood seals with your face.
The best looking jacket of this genre of outerwear I've come across. It was going to be used in the city. Unfortunately, the sleeves were too narrow (especially under the arm pits) and the pockets too few and sized rather small for a man's coat.
Typical MHW quality, coat well thought out. Hood lays down well, doesnt crowd the back of the neck. Slim fit and smooth exterior keeps the bulk of the coat down, nice for getting in and out of the car. Wouldn't use for skiing or any other active sport, way to warm. Good value for the money
Does this jacket have a powder skirt? Read it might be too warm for skiing but I plan on a heli-trip this winter and wonder if this could serve as a winter downtown coat and freezing temp ski coat. Thoughts?
It does NOT have a powder skirt but it is extremely weather protective due to the conduit laminate and overall length of the jacket. It would work great as an on area ski coat but I would look towards the Sub Zero SL Hooded jacket for a more all purpose and weather protective ski coat.
For non-technical uses this is the best coat I have owned. I have had North Face and Columbia previously and this is a superior product. The coat just got me through a week of minus 5 to 10 degree days in Minnesota. Generously sized, excellent zippers, warm pockets, a good hood design. I wish the cuffs in the sleeves were a little tighter but that's being picky. The coat is long but not bulky.
Bought this at super discount for use in/around Minneapolis. Again, this is not an expedition parka but a super warm around-town coat. I got the taupe/green and it's great looking.
I'm about as big as they come: 6'7" 285 former athlete who wears a 54XL suit jacket. This coat is plenty long enough in sleeves and torso. But as mentioned by others, it's a bit tight in the torso and the armpits are surprisingly tight. I wish 3XL was available. I would not have paid $300 for this fit but will accept some tightness for the price I paid.
Not sure about how Bonfire Jackets are sized but I would imagine you would be a medium. I am 5'9"/150 and I wear a medium but if you are wearing it over a bunch of stuff you may consider a large. Hope this helps...
I received my coat today after two weeks of waiting, and boy what a disappointment. While the coat looks and feels nice (as I expected), this one will be going back tomorrow because of two major issues: poor fit and lack of insulation/down. I hope others do not waste the time that I did.
Poor fit: I consider myself quite average in size and dimensions (5'10",190, 42-44 chest) for contemporary Americans. Sure I could lose a few, but I do not consider myself abnormal in terms of shoulder size or arm length. I ordered a large thinking I would be fine. Wrong. The arms are a bit long, but that I can deal with. The cut around the shoulders and armpits, however, seems totally off when compared to the other dimensions of this coat. Wearing just a t-shirt, the coat feels tight in the armpits and quite uncomfortable. For a winter parka that would normally be worn over a light sweater this is totally unacceptable. This poor fit is the major deal-breaker for me, an might explain why this seemingly awesome coat is on 'closeout' in many stores.
Lack of down: Even if you are skinny with narrow shoulders and long arms and this strange coat manages to fit you, I would advise against it because it does not seem to have that much down in it. The dirty secret of down is that 'fill power' (550, 650, 800, etc.) refers to the quality (insulation to weight ratio) of the down but not the quantity of the down in the coat. Sure this has 650 down, but there does not seem to be that much of it in the coat - especially in the sleeves. This small amount of down maybe fine when the temps are int he 20s and 30s, but when it is -10 (as it is right now) the cold goes right through the sleeves.
Save yourself the time and do not but this coat unless you get a chance to try it on in person.
Yeah, it's more trenchcoat-y than most MH jackets. Keep that in mind when you consider using it. Any activity where you need to lift your legs (climbing, hiking), this will probably get in the way. For around town and skiing, though, it's a good choice.
Great coat for around town... Keeps you warm and dry. Down that does NOT make you look like the Michelin tire guy. It's a little longer also... Hard to find this type of jacket in this length. Would have liked a few more pockets but aside from that, it's great.
